RE: Vet aggression
it is not the same vet…. it is any vet. we have moved and it has happened at the 2 vets we have tried.

Vet aggression
every since Rocky got examined internally by the vet after being hit by a car he is absolutely aggressive to the vet. We can get him there but he goes absolutely demon voice and growling when we get there. They gave us medicine to give him….. 1 and 1/2 pills didn't work. They gave us 2 and 1/2 pills.... that didn't work. He got the muzzle off as soon as he saw where we were. I am SO frustrated. We asked the vet what the next step was and he said there wasn't one. He couldn't get close enough to give him a shot.

RE: Dogbites in my yard
we had to quarantine him for 10 days and have him cleared by the vet. We have not heard on the doctor bills so I am assuming their insurance paid… which is what they said would be used if it worked. The boy was over here the next day so I know there are no hard feelings. no more problems with Rocky.

RE: Dogbites in my yard
animal control came by yesterday and we have to quarantine rocky for 10 days then take him to the vet. He said it is our liability regardless of the reasoning just like if we had a well at our property that a trespasser fell into. He was nice but I am still not sure about the guys insurance.. we also found out he is an excop and a newspaper reporter here in town. almost funny but not in a good way!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Dogbites in my yard
this kid was 12 years old. So I guess my dog just has to live the rest of his life inside unless we are walking him. Wow, that's rough to think about…. you can tell I moved from the country I guess since my mind can't wrap around that thought yet!

RE: Dogbites in my yard
IT was naive on our part. where we moved from Rocky could be in the backyard while we were gone with no problem because we had no neighbors but city life is different for him and I hate that for him.
As far as the cost to Rocky, I feel like I went from a pet owner with a great, friendly dog to one with a dangerous dog in one morning with no warning. Here he sits, curled up at my side as usual, with no idea he is now 'labelled' dangerous. I really want to know what that kid was doing to him. He was bit on the hand but insists he was walking by him…. his hand was not walking by.
Now that he has bitten once will he be more likely to bite again?

Dogbites in my yard
Well, we were gone to church today and had a neghbor show up to tell us our dog (who has never bitten) bit their kid. We have a run in the yard that is clearly and only our front yard and I am wanting to know what the kid was doing with his bike in our front yard (it was still there), It is not near the sidewalk.
They took him to the emergency room and he got one stitch and the parents have already stated we need to pay for it. We then got a call from the emergency room to get shot dates for animal control personnel. How much is this going to cost us? I guess we will not be able to have Rocky outside? I wish we had a fence!
I will also add that our future worry is that we have no control over getting a fence (church parsonage) and have so many people over this new worry is one I don't know how we will handle. We moved from the country to the city and it stinks for him!

Just started a new job and…
I am seriously considering trying to keep Rocky out of the crate while I am gone. We usually keep him in the back yard but winter is coming. Last winter, I stayed home during the daya dn when I was gone we crated him. We have never left him alone for longer than 30 minutes but he has never done any damage. How will I know if he can handle this?

RE: Free Basenji in Southern Illinoisan newspaper
We got Rocky last May when we saw an ad in the Southern Illinoisian (the same one you mentioned). She had just had back surgery and the pups werew almost 5 months old so wew got Rocky for $100. She was asking $200 for the girls. I was amazed at how her house did not smell. She had about 8 pups and 3 adult females, 1 adult male. She had crate trained them and took alot of time to explain about the breed to us. She brought the mom in and then the 2 pups we pointed out. Rocky was the bolder of the 2. When we first bought him my kids were still in school in St Louis so we traveled back and forth every week with him and he LOVES the car. He did absoltely destroy the house when he was left alone for the first time and he escaped from the crate (he somehow turned the water on in the bathroom sink and bathtub also) but thankfully the house was totally empty and the blinds were all we had to replace. Rocky has been a perfect 1st Basenji for us and is so well behaved! We did rescue one lately and give her away and have been told she is a screamer but not our own. Rocky sold us on the breed. I called her recently for info about a girl and she was trying to get $500 for the ones she had left. She said she was getting out of the breeding for personal health reasons.

RE: Free Basenji in Southern Illinoisan newspaper
We def. have the same breeder! What else do you know about your dogs/ Were they registered? She had back surgery around the time our Rocky was born and did not register the litter. Please let me know what else you know about the dogs.
Thanks! -
RE: Free Basenji in Southern Illinoisan newspaper
I live in Southern Illinois and can almost guarantee you this dog came from the same breeder I got my dog from. If so, this would be in DeSoto or Murphysboro area.

RE: Someone dumped three b puppies
I guess I am just blessed to have gotten a great dog. I am not sure whether she is actually pulling my leg or not but since we are not planning to breed our boy then I am not going to pay her to register the litter. As far as what he looks like, he is taller and leaner than the others we found (actually he is the most gorgeous dog I have seen) but hey, I have nothing to prove so African or not he is def a purebred Basenji and I hope everyone on the board gives their dog as much love as our guy gets. I do thank God he doesn't have the bahavior issues I read about on here! LOL

RE: Someone dumped three b puppies
wow, I did not know that. She gave me the name of the mom and dad but said she did not register the litter because she just sold them as pets and to register my dog she would have to pay to register the whole litter. She said she sells her stud eveery year to prevent crossbreeding. The breeder's 1st name is Melinda and she lives in southern Illinois. I have her phone number and picked the puppy up in person so I hve her address also. The stud was already sold but his name is Achin-roth ( I am sure I am spelling that wrong). I do know she was ill at the time I bought our dog and had just had back surgery… that is why she was selling them at a reduced price. At the time I did not know enough about Basenjis to request paperwork.

RE: Someone dumped three b puppies
OK, SO i CALLED MY BREEDER AND SHE SAID THAT THE dogs were americanized Basenjis while mine was an Avangar (sp?) African Basenji. She said that the American ones were more squat and shorter. We did not pay for papers on our dog and she said we could pay her for them if we want to.. $200)

RE: Someone dumped three b puppies
well, if she is so is her little brother we placed Wed.

RE: Someone dumped three b puppies
We took her to the vet and they said the nails were clipped…. also had her checked for worms and she does not have them... I think she was overfed because she is fat:o So that is just my opinion.

RE: Someone dumped three b puppies
Well, a family we trust has the 1st little boy and another is considering the little girl but the 3rd (girl) we could not catch and she was hit by a car this morning… makes me so angry, the dogs have been overfed and have their nails clipped so I am unsure why someone would choose to dump them like that.
