Each to their own; but nothing wrong with using a crate and crate training a pup, If a pup is in the destructive stage and you need to be out the house for a certain period of time. Better than a destructive pup finding live wires and chewing on etc.

My 3year old has full access of the house when I pop out now as he is not destructive anymore. My 1year old is crated and will free roam the house when mellowed down at a later stage. It helps eliminate any bad habits like chewing on furniture or anything life threatening where you cannot control if you aren’t at homing watching.

If Zola after a walk still doesn’t slow down pop her in the cage for a hour; I do this still with my basenjis one is now 3years old and the other just hit 1 years old. After a walk they drink if they need to then they go bed; it helps teach them how to shut down and not always be crazy.

I have two basenjis, and it’s easier however the first basenji should be fairly trained as it would make bringing a new pup in alot easier and you will find they will tag team against you lol!

It does get better with age it certainly did for my 3 year old just waiting for the youngest one to mellow down; keep working with her and it will all fall intro place.

The only person that can remove endorsements is the breeder; Kc has no say in removing the endorsement if the breeder wants to keep them up

The joys of owning a male basenji during rutting season; just remember you aren’t in it alone; it will soon be over.

First time my boy experienced rutting season he would cry constantly at home; wasn’t to bothered with intact males.

Second rutting season he wanted nothing to do with males and all round a right pain to deal with. A GSD he grew up with and used to love is now his enemy since the second rutting season.

Currently he seems much easier this year; only gets triggered if another dog flirts with his lady.

I think each male deals with rutting seasons differently then others.

-What are you doing for the biting to start or does he randomly come and bite?

Should have waiting till he was fully matured and developed before neutering in my opinion

My first basenji I would pick him up and walk somewhere far and for him to get home he would have to walk in the rain; he picked up on it and now will walk in the rain without any issues. Same with my pup now; she follows what ever Kenji does and when she sees him walking in the rain she will hurry along to walk next to him and clean him

They are stuck on lead and bored, you own a basenji. If you don’t trust them off lead, get them on a long line and let them explore. They are trying to be dogs and they aren’t able to.

A over stimulated dog means you aren’t meeting it’s needs so to them “they NEED to get over to the dog across the field or they see a bird and they NEED to chase. My basenjis chase birds but come back straight after because they are stimulated and they are not desperate to get everything.

Start doing more stimulating things on walks instead of loose leading walking; you’ll find once you start meeting their needs and let them be a dog the pulling will reduce because you are providing for them.

What I do with my basenjis is bring their daily allowance of food on the walks and throw their food around in a spot and let them sniff out their food. Usually 15mins a day.

They are a sight hound and scent hound so I use a flirt pole at least twice a week and let them chase a fluffy toy

Lastly I do tug of war with them which love.

I used this when my boy was a baby and if he was underweight I would increase his food and if he was on the right track I would keep the same amount.

It’s good to have a look at the dogs behind your pup to see how the dogs in his lines turned out full grown if they was compact, slim etc.

@tanza yes that’s right depending if they have a garden to access whilst you are out etc.

Dog theft is all still high in the uk so I wouldn’t risk a basenji at home for a really long period unattended and having access to the garden incase “worse case scenario happened” and someone came into the garden.

In the Uk I haven’t seen any positive news with a basenji at day care, I personally won’t put my two in daycare at all.

Oh no, 8hours is way to long!

You won’t have a house to come back to if you leave a basenji in their for 8 hours.

All breeds can have separation anxiety.

I personally wouldn’t Buy a basenji if I knew I was going to be out most the day 8hours plus. It’s way to long for any dog and isn’t the life they deserve.

@Lustopher work through the frustration, start with simple work at the start which he enjoys then move him onto whatever you are teaching him. He needs to understand getting frustrated isn’t solving anything.

Good keep working at it impulse control don’t give in when he’s frustrated. You want to end on a positive note not him getting frustrated and walking off.

Yes my boy heels on lead and off lead in the park and to the park.

I have videos of heel work with my boy but I’m not sure if it’s possible to sharing on here.

I use his daily allowance for food for training and his favourite toy when it comes to off lead heel work and lead heel. You do not want to make this session long at all. Heel work is very boring to them. @eeeefarm has gone through heel work nicely I would follow that advice as it’s very similar to what with my boy.

I wouldn’t waste money on a harness at all. I personally use a slip lead; when he is a little older you can use a gentle leader. Collar placement is important you don’t want the collar down at the chest m. Once you control the head you control the mind of the dog

@Lustopher teach bed means bed.

If you are working on a command for him to go to his crate give him the command once he is in there don’t reward him straight away but reward him maybe after 5 seconds. “Yes” or “free” I use for my boy to so he knows to get a treat, those are words I used to release my boy from what I asked him to do. Teach you pup a release command; you can do it when he is sitting, in the crate or whatever. Wait for him to do the command after a few seconds say “yes” and free when you want your pup to be released; you will be able to increase the duration to the point where he won’t leave the crate till he hears your release command.

@Lustopher when he pulls don’t move wait till he settles down before you set off again. Pull to him means he gets what he wants; you don’t want that.

I’m surprised you are having such issues with a 11 week old pup already.

Don’t lift him up when he’s having his tantrums. He most probably does not like being picked up frequently. He needs to learn to calm down by himself pop him in the crate with the gate open; after training and playtime teach him how to switch off. Remember he is 11 weeks old, he is also Teething. You don’t want to be lifting up a 11kg Basenji whilst he’s having a tantrum when he’s older so I wouldn’t recommend picking him up now to relax him; you don’t want that to be a habit. Currently he’s seeing you picking him up as a reward.

Pups tend to want to go toilet straight after waking up, after a meal and after playtime.

I’m trying to narrow it down, and it could simply be that your pup needs help with knowing how to switch off after play time and training.

Basenjis are independent, he wants to do things for himself im sensing.

When my boy was tiny he learnt very quickly going toilet outside means he can get back inside quickly. You don’t want to teach your basenji, whining and biting gets what he wants, he does this and you take him back inside. You are in trouble! .

Bathing is a forever battle with my Basenji a 11kg Basenji suddenly turns into a 450kg Basenji with arms waving and grabbing onto everything near him to avoid the tub. If his paws are dirty use a sponge and water to clean him off. I’ve never had to wash my boy.

When he gets annoyed when you don’t give a treat what do you do?

Your training sessions might be too long; if it’s Repetitive and the same thing you ask him each time he’s getting bored.

He is taking advantage of you, what stimulating games are you playing with him. Do sent work with him he is a scent hound he will love to work with his noise.

And what do you mean by physical play, that could be contributed to the biting.

How old is he aswell?
