I didn't even think to look? Any idea what dogs have them for? Probably for holding prey in the wild?

RE: Some great old Basenji films
I love them! I could only find still photos from 1939 of basenji's with a pigmea tribe, and some English drawings from when they were discovered. I can't wait to share with my family. I am a VERY proud owner of Moses Donkey, my beloved Basenji!!! I wouldn't want any other furson LOL!

Dandruff
Am I using the wrong food or what? I heard they did not shed much and until this weekend I had noticed any different?

RE: The Toilet Paper Thief
I was sitting there in the bathroom minding my own business when the door flung open and my boy stopped dead in his tracks and looked at me like I was doing something wrong because I was in there. He stared at me through the corner of his eye and walked very slowly to the counter where we keep the toilet paper. I didn't say anything because I wanted to see just how bold he is. Still staring at me through the corner of his eye, he put his front legs on the counter and slowly opened his mouth, and was going to grab the roll of paper. "Not Yours" I said to him and as soon as I finished speaking he grabbed the paper and ran just as fast as he could. I was in no position to chase him but I just kept yelling, "NOT YOURS! NOT YOURS!". My wife caught him in the hallway and shredded toilet paper all around him. She yelled at him and he ran off, I just know he was laughing at meβ¦
I have been a victim of a drive by snatching myself. LOL! I love that you still tried to yell "not yours" Classic, LOL!

RE: So my dog just bit me
How sad. It always concerns me when my B is acting like spoiled brat. My husband tends to react worse then me but we have not gotten bit. When my son wanted to name him Donkey, I told him no we would give him that as a middle name, but little did I know how appropriate it actually is. Don't let it get you down, he young and doesn't realize your the Alpha

RE: Hiding bones :)
You'll just have to stick with manufactured treats then I guess - what a loss to your pup.
He won't know he's lost out. I think I will get him a cows leg bone from the butcher. Anyone tried one before?

RE: Hiding bones :)
I guess this shows my husband & I's immaturity, but we cannot buy our son (furkid) a bulls penis to chew on. There has got to be something else?
I giggle just thinking about it, and it grosses me out.LOL!!!!!! -
RE: Hiding bones :)
I'm not sure what that is? An actual billy club like the cops use?

RE: Hiding bones :)
how cute! Do you give them something else to chew on? I hate rawhide, but if he doesn't have something he will chew on everything he walks by, while he's walking by it. He does "drive by chewings"

RE: Basanji paws
Basenjis do not have web feet?
I mis typed, sorry. webbed toes on the paws. Orginial Basenjis taken to England in the 1930's were said to have connected toe pads. I refered to them as webbed, but I understand that it not acturate. Sorry Again

RE: Ciao From south Italy!!!
I'm fairly new as well. My boy, Moses (named because the basenji was brought up out of Egypt) is almost 6months. I adore this site and have received a lot of advice that works!
Enjoy! -
Hiding bones :)
Moses has started to hide his bones (rawhide, but if anyone has a suggestion for a healthier choice, I'm listening) under the tuffet. Then he lays half under to chew on it. I think he "thinks" we can't see him because he can't see us. It's so funny - i'll try & get a picture to post, but when he knows we're paying attention he leaves the skirted stool and grabs something else. it's like he's trying to distract us from knowing where he's put it. All his other toys he puts away in their basket? It's hilarious! LOL!

RE: Baby gates, or Basenji: 1, Human: 0
So far my gate is still working. We don't ever step over the top though, I'm hoping Moses doesn't try to go over the top if he doesn't see us do it? He does try and throw his weight at the area thats latched to break thru Lets hope he does figure it out, he's still just a puppy.

RE: Flea Med's
Sergeant? It's a cheaper brand? i didn't see anyone mention it? My furkid is almost old enough for the flea dip? Is Sergeant okay? I use other sergeant flea & tic products for outside & around the house? Any opinions

RE: Basanji paws
All B's have the web feet. Apparently this trait is uaually found in water breeds? I found a list on the internet about webbed paws when my family was picking the dog for us.

RE: Our B lets us know if he needs to go out
Moses circles. It doesn't matter what room or whats going on. He circles, stops and looks at you, then circles again. He repeats the steps untill we are smart enough to let him out. We are finially getting it. Funny how he has potty trained us? LOL!

When should we get him fixed?
We don't plan on breeding our basenji dog and will get him fixed. He is almost 6months old now, but I have heard theat if you want your dog (especially boys) to grow to their full potential you should wait a full year so they have completely gone thru puberty? Anyone have any recommendations?

RE: Are Basenji's really destructive?
My basenji, will be destructive when he gets frustrated. We maintain the wolf pack postion while with him, He has is own room for when we leave and we designate "paper ripping time" We asked for advice on how to stop the behavior and many owners said learn to love around it. We are learning and the special paper ripping time helps him enjoy what he loves and keeps the mess confined.
