Donna, Val, and Cindy,
Looking forward to our meeting this Sunday. We should definately watch the weather. If its too cold we may want to postpone. Kaya hates the cold, but I'm just getting over a respiratory illness so I dont want to over do it. At this point I think Kaya would run around in any weather, she's stir crazy. I KNOW she'll LOVE meeting new friends and seeing Chase.

Donna, Cindy,
Sorry I wasnt able to make it today!! I was thinking about the playdate all day, wanting to be there more than anythng.
I saw that Val didnt make it. Perhaps she got lost???? I hope not!! Finding the entrance to the park isnt always that easy. The first time I was there I parked in the back of the WaWa parking lot and walked down the hill.
Anyway, I still plan on being there Sunday morning and will keep an eye on the weather. If its REALLY cold or wet, we may need to reschedule since Kaya hates the cold/wet too!

Sun 1/18 between 10-11 works for me
I wont be able to make any weekday play dates until spring as I am training for a new position at work. My schedule will be way more flexible in the spring. I'm sorry I cant make the play date on the 12th but I could make it on Sunday 1/18 if anyone is interested (unless weather is snowy or wet) I can be flexible with the time, whatever is convenient for everyone else. I'll wait to hear.
The best time for me would be on the weekends, in the afternoon ,between 1-4:30 as i work during the week now.
Val,
The Dog park is part of Lambert Park in West Goshen, PA (a township in West Chester) There are directions to the park online. I can send you the link if you want or you can google it. The other basenji owner that I know is very interested in setting something up in the future. She has a brown and white male named Chase and I have a brindle female named Kaya.
Hello, I havent been on the Basenji chat in awhile. I was excited to see that there are others interested in a Basenji play date in my area. I live in Malvern, PA. I have been meeting with another Basenji owner at a fenced in dog park in West Chester which is convenient to 202 and Rt 100. Perhaps we could plan a play date in the future. Any interest??
Val,
Sorry, but I'm not going to be able to make it this Friday. I completely forgot that I have therapy and a doctor's appt this Friday. I think my vacation threw me off schedule. I thought it was next week. My hand therapist reminded me this morning. Maybe we can try another day/time in the future.
Val,
I live in Chester County which is about 45 minutes from the city and I'm only familiar with the dog park in West Chester. I would be more than happy to meet at any of the parks you mentioned however, I have no idea which one would be better. I do not have a fenced in yard either and that is why I go to dog parks once in awhile. You do have to be careful as you mentioned. While most dog parks have rules about aggressive dogs, etc, I dont think many follow the rules and it can be dangerous. You also have to worry about them catching an illness as our vet cautioned. Kaya loves to run off leash though so I'm hoping for a place that is fenced in. I will take a look at the places you mentioned and see if I can find one of those books that was recommended. Hopefully it wont rain on Friday. Kaya doesnt like to get her feet wet, is Mick like that too??
Would love to have a play date. I am out of work due to recent hand surgery and Friday would be fine. What area are you in? Any dog parks around you? I have another dog (Manchester Terrier) but he was a puppy mill dog and becomes anxious in certain situations so I would just bring Kaya. Getting a second dog is definately a smart move, even if its not a basenji. My two love eachother, they play, wrestle, and cuddle together. We also have two cats and Kaya loves to play with them too. Let me know about Friday, when and where?
My basenji gets diarrhea whenever she eats any sort of bone especially with marrow, etc. We have to be really careful with all food/treats. Her stomach is very temperamental.
Congatulations on your Basenji!! We should get together. We live in Malvern PA and have a female basenji named Kaya. She was more or less a rescue as a friend from work found her running in traffic. We were the third placement and were told that she was a fox terrier. We realized she was a basenji and joined the forum to learn how to manage her. Like many, I cannot go anywhere without her. I just returned from a vacation to Charleston /Folly Beach SC. WHile there, she literally bent the metal bars on the crate I kept her in when I went out to do some touring. She became anxious, squeezed out of the bars and escaped. WHen she couldnt see out the windows, she tore apart the blinds, ate them, tore them to bits, then defacated all over the white area carpet!!! Lovely! WHat a disaster!!! Dont know if I'll do that again. Gotta love those basenjis though!!!
She is about a year old. I thought her stool seemed harder than usual, from the looks of it. Anyway, I've been using a little metamucil in her food which is what the vet suggested. It has worked for the most part. Although the other day I found part of a broken glass figurine (Christmas ornament) under the sofa. I'm wondering if she ate the missing piece which could've caused some internal injury. I'm thinking of getting vet insurance. I see problems down the road.
So far so good, three whole days with no accidents but I did catch her trying to open the bedroom door again and promptly brought her outside. She does seem to go more than my other dog. She eats two small meals daily, and I've had her to the vet twice for parasite checks (negative). The vet said it may be nerves since we have no idea of her history. She doesnt strike me as a nervous dog, quite the opposite. As Andrea has suggested, we are keeping her in our sight or in the crate and this seems to be working. Again, I think being unfamiliar with the breed is a big part of the problem. We are slowly getting it. Thank you all.
I have had a basenji for three months now and I am suddenly missing one shoe of several different pairs. I have looked everywhere. I cannot figure out what she did with them. So, yeah, I think hiding things is something they like to do. I really miss my leather boot, hope it turns up soon.
I have had Kaya (about 1 yr old) for about 3 months now. She was found running loose by a friend of mine and I am the third placement. Her behaviors have improved as long as I tire her out but she continues to drop #2's in the bedrooms of my house. This occurs even after she has just done so outdoors. I cannot figure this out and its driving me crazy. I have been rewarding her for good potty habits but she continues to unload in my kid's bedrooms, and she's very quick and sneaky about it.
Any suggestions out there? Caesar, where are you???
Yeah… so we were painting our daughters room and put all the disposable supplies into a trashbag. we thought the door was closed tight... apparently not!
Thank you all for the wonderful advice!! I will try the child proof locks on the cabinets, especially the drawer to the trashcan.
As far as the potty training, I will try keeping treats in my pocket again and rewarding Kiyah (Egyptian for "jovial lady") as soon as she goes. It's rough in the morning when I have to leave for work and she looks at me in defiance as if she knows I cant leave until she does her "business".
I have recently became the owner of a young basenji female. Over the past two days she has been screaming when she poops. I took her to the vet and there was nothing obvious wrong. The vet said that her rectum prolapses slightly when she goes to the bathroom and I should wipe her with baby wipes and put vaseline her her bottom. Tonight there was a tiny bit of bleeding. Has anyone ever had similar problems?? The vet did not find anal sac issues or constipation, no sign of parasites. It just seems strange to me. Its really upsetting when she cries like that.
