head is all wrong for a purebred, but suspect a mix of something. Does she bark?

RE: Any lure Coursing in the Montreal, Canada Area?
also look at events listed on the CKC web site under lure coursing and on the CASFA site. I know the ontario club runs near niagra falls several times a year.

RE: Is my Basenji overweight and Suggestions for feeding him?
Puppies need more food than adults. On a grain free diet, fromm, tast of wild etc, dog eat less as its more nutritional. I have all mine on a diet now as they were gaining too much wt over the winter on their normal 3/4 cup at night, at 1/2 I am seeing a wt loss in my biggest boy. My old boy is losing too much weight, so I had to adjust him back up. Mixing vegetables in is a great way to get them to loose wt if they will eat it, mine pick out the kibble arount the veggie and opt to go hungry vs eating those nasty green things.
If you feel cush vs ribs when you grip thier sides, the dog is too fat. You should feel sleek muscle and ribs down thier sides. Mine are only too thin when their hips show.

RE: Researching Basenjis
You may want to volunteer as a foster for BRAT, they are always getting dogs in that need to be homed. I saw a post of three that need immediate pickup from Amarillo TX today. I was a whippet foster a few months ago and adopted her despite her severe PTSD. Could not bear to see her go through more trauma being shuttled to another home after the horrific upbringing she had.

RE: Researching Basenjis
There are many adults with breeders who are placed in homes after they finish their championship, especially males as a breeder only needs to keep so many males to continue the lines. These dogs are used to traveling in cars to shows, being quiet in crates and adapt well to a single dog house. And they are fully health tested which is VERY IMPORTANT.
My basenjis scream at the top of thier lungs when I at at training class with them and I am working one , the other is very unhappy to be crated. Rescues come with thier own set of troubles, key of which is that many rescues have not been health tested for Fanconi using the direct DNA test. Do not get a dog unless that test is done first, you want to know if there is a possiblity of your dog developing fanconi later in life, I would also say the PRA test for blindness is a must as there are so many blind basenjis out there too. Basenjis will live to 16 years or more, you need to be prepared to support them that long, and knowing health issues down the road is important. too many people get rescues, then find out they cannot financially handle the many health issues that crop up, many of which could have been avoided by getting a dog from a reputable breeder.

RE: How to spot a puppy mill or backyard breeder
and for what rock creek charges for an unregistered dog, you can get a fully registered dog from a reputable breeder, key is to get on a waiting list a year out.

RE: How to spot a puppy mill or backyard breeder
Websites are very misleading. If the registered names of both parents are not able to be located in the OFA data base proving health testing was done, they are a BYB or puppy mill and you should run in the other direction. http://www.offa.org/ should be the first place any buyer goes to verify what the "breeder" is telling them is true.

RE: 9mos..biting really bad…will not listen..
Trog chewed on my ankles and wrists for a good nine month despite giving him as much play as I could to wear him out, I finally got him a couple whippet playmates as our 13 and 14 yr old basenji ignored him, that worked to help him grow beyond the chewing stage. Gambit is nearly 4 and still nibbles on the necks of all the other dogs to initiate play, its a gentle nibble with the mouth almost closed, but can be pretty anoying. You just have to continue to work with her and channel her energy elsewhere.

RE: Basenji lab puppy aggressive
Trog wanted to chew on my wrists and ankles till he was about 6 months old, every time he tried to chew, I put a nylabone in his mouth and indicated to him that was what he was to chew. Remember a tired puppy is less likely to get into trouble, wear her out, lots of walks and play, followed by treats and naps.

RE: How I 'trained' my Basenji 'Antigone'
I would not say basenji are endangered at all, they just require preplanning to get on a waiting list and get a healthy animal. Of course, only AKC registered should be bred, unfortuantley there are plenty of back yard breeders trying to pass off other registries as legit. Remember you cannot do the hip Xray to determine if the hips are good until the dog is two, that gives you plenty of time for the Fanconi direct Test, PRA test, Thyroid test, OFA eye exams etc. Reputable breeders will provide the name of the sire and dam so you can verify on the offa.org site that all the required health tests have been done.
How familiar are you with showing? Most breeders will insist on a coownership on any pups sold and require that the dog be a finished champion in the show ring before breeding is considered, of course assuming that all the health tests come back acceptable. Normally if the dog is not going to be shown, the contract will require that the bitch is spayed.

RE: **WANTED** Male Basenji Puppy near New York
It would also be a good idea to visit an event with basenjis, dog show, basenji club meetup, breeder etc, to ensure that allergies are not an issue. I had one person visit me three times to make sure allergies were not an issue, and they were.
My biggest concern with basenjis is that they dart out the door and get killed often, you have to live in a household where the door is always securely shut and the dog is crated when people are coming in and out. Children often leave a door ajar and the dog is lost, has happened dozens of times this year alone. When my inlaws visit my dogs stay crated because they are unable to not stand in the open doorway talking, they are just not trainable, the inlaws that is:)

RE: Looking for bk/wh female puppy
As most basenjis are born in Dec, you are very unlikely to find a 2 month old at this time of yr, but you could get on waiting lists for this years breedings.

RE: Did I make a good switch - Pet Cueran to Blue Buffalo
mine get a cup a day of Fromm, was feeding taste of the wild previously. Blue Buffalo gave mine loose stools, but never tried the salmon as none of mine will eat fish versions of any food, it has to be chicken

RE: Jet the trying

RE: First time showing a basenji
It depends on the dog, I never chaulk, for Tempests show this weekend she will get a bath with bright white shampoo Thurs and a dremel, that is it for her, when Gambit showed I trimmed the tail a bit with curved shears as she has a bushy tail. We will be coursing each day after the show, if she has to go back for group I will wipe her down with a wet cloth to get the field dust off her.
