RE: Walking Basenji
I have 3 off leesh dog parks around me which helps. But walking him can be a pain. I am glad I don't share this trait by myself.
Can any lend some tips how start to teach them while on lead they don't go after prey? I have been getting him to sit and turning him around. If i keep doing this will he understand?
thanks!

RE: Finally settled in (pic heavy)

Walking Basenji
Hey Everyone,
My mix is very prey driven. When taking him on a walk he has started to go crazy when a squirel is in his site. He doesn't usually pull but when he sees a squirrell he will try to go after it. Sometime if I don't see the squirrell first it will catch me off guard. Do you have any advice on how to work with him on this? Or since they are high prey dogs is he always going to be this way. I have him on a regular collar and leesh. I haven't tried a martingale or harness.
any advice would be great!
thank you in advance!

I can not belive how much your pups look like my dog. Mine is a mix too. Not sure with what. Adorable. I really wonder what kind they are. Kentucky came from a Kentucky shelter and is about 8-10 months old. here is a picture!

RE: For the Love of Mud
I wish I could walk home and just stick him in the bath. But he rides in the back with towels and blankets that I wash. By the time I get home he is ALMOST clean. Thank goodness for cat like cleaning and short hair!

RE: Jobs with animals
In Canada you have to become a Registered Vet Tech as well. It is a 2 year college course. You can also go and become an animal care worker which is a one year course. But the Tech's make a significant more money than the ACW's.
I have also looked into Pet sitting, Pet Walking and such because it is very big over here.
I also volunteer at the Humane Society with walking and loving the animals.
Training is another option but I do not understand how to become one. I would even think about being someones apprentice for this.
I had a friend get bitten by a dog in the neck and face right in front of my and almost die so I would also like to educate people regarding dog bites and attacks. Maybe teach kids how to tell signs of when I dog looks aggressive or not comfortable. How to approach dogs and when not too. When to do when a dog isnt yours and you are at its house.
I am looking at all my options to make sure I make the next right step in my life. I know it is with animals. Rescue, training, saving. They are all too important to me not to be more apart of that!

Jobs with animals
I would like to start working in the animal industry. Sitting behind a desk all day long, not doing anything that is motivating or helping anything or anyone is just not for me. I have done it long enough.
I am willing to go back to school or get whatever training nessassary. I have been looking around and talking to a few people at the dog parks.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I have raised animals (cats & dogs) all my life.

RE: Help Please!!
I don't have a backyard either but I do make sure I walk my Mix twice a day. And he gets atleast 2 hours at the dog park each night. I agree they need A LOT of excersice and a job to keep them healthy.
I agree if this isnt working out maybe it is time to find a new home or one or both. But if you are going to keep both of them I suggest you look up some sort of training or a behavorist.
