I think they've been taken into rescue. I was talking to someone in Vegas over the weekend and she was telling me about them coming into rescue. Not sure if it's BRAT or not.

RE: Dry dog food
I feed Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish. Seems to agree with everyone. Norah was allergic to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul.

RE: Barking??
Barking is a learned behavior. Guppy barks often and he's a B but he's a monkey see monkey do kinda guy. His B mix sister Norah barks so that's where he gets it from.

Leash Behavior (or lack thereof)
I just switched all three of my dogs to Martingale collars. Prior to that we were using a choke chain, a harness and an old martingale style collar. Two of my dogs are fine, the harness dog however is quite feisty and since we stopped using the harness she is crazy when we're trying to walk. Depending upon the length of our walk we have to cross two busy streets. Last night she had Guppy on his back in the middle of one of the streets wrestling with him all the while a car was coming and I was tangled in leashes. We got away safely but I'm not sure what to do with her. Not walking her isn't the answer, I thought about putting her back on the harness but I want her to learn to behave on the walks. Any suggestions??

RESCUE! Also there is a breeder in Glendale. Can't think of her name but if pressed I could come up with it.

RE: Does anyone use a cooling/ reflective coat for their Tri, Brindle, or B&W Basenji
Where do you live? We try not to go out when it's hot but sometimes here in PHX even after dark it's over 100. Both my kids are red/red &white but I have a b&w foster.

RE: My only kid happens to be four legged.
Thinly disguised as a forum-it's really a place where you are accepted, understood and loved. We all share the same "problem" -we're all owned by Basenjis and love it! I have two and a B&W foster. Love Cherokee's name-hope you guys find a sibling soon. BTW-my B's are male & female….

I emailed individually and let the BRAT folks know too.

RE: Adopted Very Basenji-looking dog from Africa!
A dog that doesn't like all dogs-definitely a Basenji characteristic. Just ask Guppy how he feels about Shibas, Shephers and Huskys.

RE: Jasper Doesn't Like Dry Dog Food!
What kind of kibble are you feeding him? Norah used to be that way and then someone gave me Natural Balance-she scarfed it down (no canned food mixed in) and asked for more!

RE: Will my basenji hold a grudge?
Guppy is such a good boy he eats the pill wrapped in anything-Norah however, is far more difficult and the only way I can get a Comfortis down her is to wrap it in chicken skin. I have a baggie saved in the freezer (or I did before we moved from FL) that contains their chicken skins. First I give them a small piece or two to throw them off and then I sneak it in there and they gobble it down. I give them another small piece afterwords too just for good measure.

Basenjis in the Sonoran Desert
Moved back to Tempe last fall from Tampa (sigh….) ran into a couple Basenjis and BRAT alumni here in Tempe at Papgo Dog Park. We are having an informal Basenji meetup on Saturday 3/17 at 1:30 pm. Hoping to make it a regular event. All are welcome!

RE: My basenji is showing aggression towards certain people, sometimes dogs too
I've had some of the same issues with my Guppy. The DAY he turned 14 months he turned into Mr. Grumpy Pants. Resource guarding etc. I had it under control and then we moved across country and are staying with a friend (a friend who doesn't like dogs and is narrow-minded when it comes to behavior-her suggestion is for me to "spank" my dogs….yeah right). Guppy doesn't like my friend we are staying with (her fault) and his behavior has sort of relapsed back to Mr. Grumpy Pants. I control it as much as possible (first growl gets him kicked off the bed) but until we are all settled into our own place I suspect I will have to ride it out.

RE: Chipley's Not-so-great Adventure
Guppy never escapes. Even when his sister does. I will come home to one dog out and Guppy on the couch.

Agility & Obedience in AZ
Anyone know of any clubs in the PHX area? I have an agility B and an obedience B (okay we're WORKING on the obedience part-truly he's the class clown)

RE: Multiple issues with Basenji
I had a foster with SEVERE separation anxiety. She would pee and poop at the door if I didn't crate her and also get tangled in the blind at the window. I put her in our plastic crate and she did fine there-at first she wasn't crazy about it but I would coax her in with treats and while she was still anxious, she was safe.

RE: Kong treats
I throw chicken livers, pumpkin and plain yogurt in a blender and puree the mixture. Then I seal the Kong hole with Peanut Butter and pour the blended mix in the kongs and freeze them over night. Keeps them busy and they love it!
