the breeder was a friend of my family and only had like 4 litters, he wasnt very experienced, but the dogs were registered. i really dont think he knows very much either,….but i am going to go digging into her registration info and family tree and see what i can find. like i said, she shows no signs, but you know what they say about prevention..... thank you all

RE: Fanconi in pups of "clear" parents?
the breeder said her mother(the dogs mother) is dna positive..and also her grandmother….the father(the dogs father) is deceased ....i meant spilling glucose. please bear with me because i am new to this and learning what i need to be doing. i had no idea when i bought her that i needed to ask about these things...which makes no difference to me now considering i love her to death.....now i just have to take care of her.....like i said there have been no signs....she is perfectly healthy, utd on everything , i just want to keep her that way.thank you again for the info.

RE: Fanconi in pups of "clear" parents?
No, i mean my dog's mother is fanconi positive, she isnt spilling urine….the mother is 8 years old......all i know is the breeder(which has stopped breeding) called me and told me that my basenji's mother is fanconi positive. so basically, what i need to know is what does that mean for my girl. she shows no signs, is there anything i need to be doing? i will read the links.....thank you for the info.

RE: Fanconi in pups of "clear" parents?
what do i use to test my basenji? also any information would be helpful…i have read alot, but would rely on people that know about basenjis.....my basenji's mother was fanconi positive and now the vet says she wants to do all these expensive test.....and my girl is only two years old and has no health issues at all since her spay in march.......any info would me appreciated.

RE: Spayed my girl and now shes sick ..help!!
Well, i took the girls to the vet today, and the doctor says Heidi has sinusitis…amoxil 3x a day for 14 days...he says Baylee the puppy looks fine, even though i see her nose running a little, he says its is normal to have that wet nose. Time will tell. He also said recheck in two weeks and if nothing changes may need to change antibiotics... He also says Heisi may have allergies....I had never thought about that.....but we will see. Thanks for all your post ,info and well wishing, i think they will be good to go soon!

RE: Spayed my girl and now shes sick ..help!!
Thank you for the replies, i am taking them this afternoon. Yes, the breeder stopped breeding basenjis and the oops litter he wanted rid of quick ,but i really hate i have exposed this little one to this, but hopefully the vet can get the jump on it early.Like i said, my Heidi has always been healthy, and i have always kept up with her healthcare, but i just didnt know about the cold thing and i know i can depend on the pack for good info…. THANK YOU!

Spayed my girl and now shes sick ..help!!
Hello everyone,
My Heidi is my beautiful purebread, red and white basenji and she was spayed two weeks ago, and had her umbilical hernia repaired, and all of her shots, and she came home very lathargic…which i though was just because of surgery....well she is moving around better, but she has had a horrible "cold" and is sneezing and reverse sneezing, snorting and snotting alot....alot of snot.....and she is on amoxicillin 2x a day...is there anything i can do to help her recover sooner? She is 2 years old...and really the first dohg that i have had since i was a child, she is the best dog ever and i hate to see my girl suffer.
ALSO, We just adopted her "half sister" just a week ago, and it is a basenji/austrailian shepperd , but the mother is my Heidi's mother, and the puppy is 7 weeks old, and is starting to sneeze, what should i do, can a puppy so young get over this mess? This is all new to me, my dog has never been sick until her first time staying at the vet for surgery, and they said she "may " have gotten it there, well yeah! she has never been around another dog, (she is a fence climber, so her acre play yard is wrapped in a 6 foot wooden privacy fence with 6 inches of concrete under) so since she has been exposed, ofcourse she picked it up there!......but any advice i would really appreciate.........Thank you all so much!!! -
RE: Spaying complications?

Spaying complications?
Hi fellow Basenji parents,
I have a question and i am so worry over my girl. I have a 2 year old girl, she was spayed Friday, and also had an unbilical hernia repaired. She was sleepy Friday when we picked her up, but still nosey, and alert. Her entire personality has changed , she was very independent, but ever since, she has been whiney, and needy , when shes awake. She is not really eating or drinking, unless i hand feed/water her, i thought she was just being a big baby, to look into her eyes, you can see she fels bad. she only gets up to go out to potty, and back lay down. Her tummy looks swollen, but she is a fat girl(30 pounds)….She goes back in a week to have sutures removed.Does anyone know whats wrong with her? -
My girl is spotting
my girl, Heidi, is 2 years old…..she has went into season in april and september for the last 2 years, and she is now bleeding again.....i am going to have her spayed as soon as it is over....i have never heard of a basenji going in that often.......is she ok.?(her vet has no experience with this breed , and often leaves the roon to look online for answers)
i cant find a vet in my area that has any knowledge.... -
RE: Breeding a basenji?
thank you, i really appreciate all the info. her parents were dna tested, i have had her urine tested, only because i was concerned why she was in heat at 5 months old. the vet didnt have a clue about the basenji breed! so she was checking for fanconi,at 5 months old….everything she got about basenji, she got off the internet. i have since been through 3 vets, none of which have any experience with this breed. the vet she has now hasnt had any experience, but knows of the breed , and knows more than the other vets, (so far).....i want to thank you all for the help, i am going to wait until she is completely recovered from heat, and have her spayed. she is our only dog, and she is a house girl, her back yard has a 6 foot privacy fence around it, so she is safe from any male dogs getting in, or her getting out and getting preggers....lol.......but she is our baby, everything i read online is nothing to the info that i get from experienced basenji owners. thank you!!

RE: Breeding a basenji?
i really do appreciate that info, she is fanconi free….but the vet is the only one that has checked her over, i have not had an eye doctor look at her, and i had no idea about the age. I didnt realize she was too young. I think it will go ahead and have her spayed. she went into heat for the first time in april '09...and she was only 5 months old, then again the first of september '09,and again in april of '10 and now in heat again....does anyone else know if this is normal? my vet is learning...none of the vets in my area are very familiar with this breed.....i thought they only went into season once a year? thanks again for the info. and more info or advice is welcome
