Thanks! I love my little dog! The reason for her attentiveness on the slide is that another dog had appeared at the park at she was trying to look at it. She does pretty good on the slide…all of my dogs like it. But she is the only one I cannot send on the slide by herself....but that's just because she's a B. Unfortunatly i don't really know anyone around here who is a member of BCOA...Pheonix's owner is the clostest basenji owner I've had contact with. But I don't think it will be to problematic right? I mean clearly she's a basenji. Thanks Sharron, i think she is good looking too, but I consider myself highly biased.

RE: Waiting for the new pup!
Mya is lovely! I can't wait to see pictures of your new puppy.
RE dew claws both my dogs including the B have them. I have not found this to be problematic. and my dogs are very active. My sisters dog, had two sets of dew claws and one of them was very loose and poorly attached, so we had the extra set removed when he was nuetered. He still retains one set and has never had problems with them. I know that dogs can have dewclaw problems, but most dog owners I know have dogs with intact dc and their dogs don't have problems. I guess to me it seems like removing the appendix on a baby because it can cause people problems potentially. Now I'm not going to say that breeders should not have dewclaws removed its pretty common practice. But to me it's not a mark of irrisponsibility to leave them on. To me a breeder who health tests, only breeds dogs of sound temperment, takes back their dogs at any time, and sells puppies with spay/nueter contracts is responsible. I did read that in the B standard about dewclaws and I remmember being suprised….The reason of a standard is to describe the perfect example of a functional specimen of a breed. The features set out in the standard that set the breed apart dictate...in theory...define its ability to do what it was bred to do. Basenjis in Africa don't have dewclaws removed and they function just fine...so how can it be incorrect then to have them? I believe someone also reminded me though the other day that there are no disqualifications in the basenji standard. For that matter how can anyone who overlooks umbilical hernias as no big deal, make such a fuss about something a dog is suppossed to have? I am probably treading into dangerous territatory here...I am not trying to insult anyones breeding practices...I am not a breeder. I am just trying to understand where everyone is coming from on this. Clearly I don't understand some things that seem to constitute responsible and irrisponsibe breeding. I don't expect anyone to answer...poor Mya's Mom's thread has been hijacked enough. I wish that someone would be able to send me a private message regarding it but since that is not possible ...I guess my question should just be considered retorical. additional I know nothing about Kiora's breeders, but I do know that she has her dewclaws and she is clear for Fanconi.(She is in the OFA database if anyone cares to look.) One of those facts is very important to me, and the other one, isn't.

RE: What on earth is Cash?
Maybe he could be part Basenji…from the pictures it is difficult to tell. could you get one head on standing veiw and one full body profile veiw?..that might make it easier to tell.

RE: New Basenji Owner
lol, sounds like a B to me! Basenjis have varying amounts of tail curl, and the tail can be single curled or double. So if less tail curl is the only difference no doubt she is a purebred. Her behavior also sounds very basenji typical….they keep you on your toes! Make sure you do some research on Fanconi Syndrome, a desiese that basenjis can get. I would also recommend that you get her tested for it with The Fanconi DNA marker test, the cost is about $65.00, and it is a very important test to determine if your b might develop fanconi. Anyways welcome! This is a good forum for any basenji owner especially a new one....lots of people to help you out!

RE: To pheonix3
Are you on my space? if you look up I think if you search my name Rachel in conjuction with Las Cruces on my space, you should be able to find me. My Pic is of a yellow dog…my non basenji dog. What I am writing is within the rules right? because I didn't put my e-mail or telephone. I would put a direct link but I am not sure if there is too much personal info on my profile? Anyways Rachel, Las Cruces, my profile pic is of a longhaired yellow dog curled up in a chair.

RE: New Parents of Our First Basenji
Congratulations! She is lovely! How lucky for both of you to find each other. Out of curiosity can someone tell me if the trindle coloration is allowed in the ring?

RE: November snow
Nice! I love his wrinkly face, it looks so kissable! I wish Kiora liked snow…she thinks it's the one of the most disgusting things on earth!

RE: Happy Birthday Kiora!
Thanks everyone for their well wishes! I think she's cute too….maybe i'm a little biased though. There are not many B's were I live, and I think Kiora is the only tri. many people we meet think she is a mix because they don't know that they can come in other colors then red.

RE: Happy birthday to tayda!
Happy birthday Tayda! This seems to be a common birthday indeed! Beautiful pics I love her adorable little face in the first one I would not be able to resist her charms! And that action shot is great! What kind of camera do you have? 6 is a wonderful age for a dog to be, enjoy it.

RE: Pumpkin crazy
Kiora loves fresh pumpkin! She usually only gets it twice a year on Halloween and Thanksgiving. It's a special treat for her. Miss Ananda thinks she is insane and would like to let it be known that she prefers to eat turkey on Thanksgiving. I think it usually goes over o.k with their tummies since it is high in fiber. Kiora's stomach is made of steel, though. Once she ate an entire bar of 70% cacao chocolate and was not even a little sick, though I was sick with worry for about a day and a half.

Happy Birthday Kiora!
In truth I don't know when Kiora was born but I picked today to celebrate her birthday…it seemed a normalish time for a Basenji to be born. She is three! My little girl is all grown up! Well I suppose she has been grown for awhile but she is the "puppy" of my pack. She was about 8 months old when I adopted her and had already been through 3 homes. I really think that fate brought us together because I was walking home from my very first day of work at PetSmart and her then owner stopped on the road to talk to me about her because he recognized my shirt. Coincidence? I didn't think so when I saw her stick her head out the window...a Tri-colored basenji! I love sighthounds and I knew that Basenjis were considered independant and naughty. When the man told me how she was destroying his apartment and screaming while he was away, how she had been rehomed before...how he couldn't keep her anymore. I became determined to adopt her; And a week later I did. She had only met me briefly the time before but when I took her leash and led her away she never looked back and neither did I.
It wasn't a very easy ajustment , for either of us I think. She had zero obedience training, was not crate trained, wasn't housebroken, she had seperation anxiety, she knocked down the trash every oppertunity, she chewed up several pairs of pants. She and Ananda didn't get along...For the trash and the clothes I had to learn to make adjustments. the other stuff came with time, patience, and lots of work. I had to learn how to live with a basenji and she had to learn how to live with structure. She and Ananda still aren't friends but they tolerate each other well enough, and Kiora found a best friend and minion in my sister's dog Keoke.
Anyways we didn't have too much fanfare today. Kiora got a pack of bully sticks, and a new cushy dog bed for her crate (She hasn't chewed her bedding in over six months...knock on wood) My sister and I sang her Happy Birthday and she got to eat a can of Wingaling to herself. She was so excited while I was putting it in her dish she sat and waved at me the whole time! (her favorite trick)
So happy birthday to my little "Roo Dog" at times she's made my life hell and at times she's made it great, and she's always made it an adventure!
Ps:Sorry about the length of my post. When I started it I didn't realize I was going to get sentimental and start rambling.:o

RE: New Wellness Core
No not at all, I am the contoversy causer.:o Sorry I know I tend to stir things up. I was just extremly disconcerted because when I was waited for Kiora's test results I read the protocal and the other info around the web and I from what I read I felt confident that if Kiora was affected I wouldn't have to make a major change in her diet. I guess I didn't think that in 2003 25-30% protein was high. However it's not considered so anymore with more and more people, myself included are feeding grain free, low carb, high protein kibbles. So I would hope that there would be a revision soon to indicate what range of protein he reccomends.
Thank you Tayda_Lenny for helping to explain some things. Without your inside knowledge I would still be confused. I hope Tayda's levels improve on her new diet Innova Senior is one of the highest quality low protein foods around with real meat and easy to digest grains.
Tanza you are right with the new test there will be a significant decrease in Fanconi basenjis! Sadly there are still lots of BYB out there though. Alot of the people I know were shocked when I had Kiora spayed…including the man I adopted her from. Why didn't you breed her and make a profit they said. If that man hadn't have adopted her out to me she might have spent her days popping out "basenjipoos" or something.nomrbddgs Does that mean I should still Glucose test Kiora even though she tested clearon the DNA test?

RE: New Wellness Core
I am sorry you are right Tanza Tayda_Lenny made the comment about the protien level here is the quote:
"Dr. Gonto does prefer lower protein diets. The protocol does say "high protein" is required but "high" in this case means something like 25-30% protein."
If there is a specific, stringent % of protein required by Dr.Gonto then shouldn't he just say so instead of being so vague? Maybe it should say any good quality dry food with 25-30% protien? In my mind and in others too Wellness Core is very high quality. if he wants us to stay away from high protein then why is the the only referance to low protein in the hybrid protocal for renal failure? And yes I am aware of the hybrid protocal, no need to shout, as I posted earlier. I am talking about the normal protocal. But that does bring up a point that if low protein is the normal reccomendation then why would there even be a hybrid protocal? Maybe I'm crazy but when I read "High protein diet" I think that that is what he really means. The main obvious conflict I can see with Wellness Core is that it is poultry based and he reccomends mammal based. When I think of a high quality mammal based food I think Innova EVO Red…this has even higher protein then Wellness. Since he doesn't say anything about restricting protein for Normal Protocal Fanconi dogs...how is one supposed to know that one should?....guess? Telepathy? Perhaps there is a secret memo nobody sent me.
Additionally references to "high protein" in conjuction with fsnconi seem to be in abundance:
"If you suspect that your Basenji has Fanconi, do not place your dog on a "kidney" diet -- which is usually low in protein. Protein is what a Fanconi-afflicted Basenji needs! Fanconi afflicted dogs are literally urinating away vital proteins and amino acids that their bodies require in order to live."
http://www.voyuz.net/voyuz.net/basenji_FAQ/Entries/2008/11/18_10_Health_Problems.html"Another way to prevent Fanconi is by making sure your pup has a beneficial diet. DO NOT restrict your Basenji's protein intake. These dogs require higher amounts of protein on a normal basis and when afflicted by Fanconi, the dog 'passes' the proteins and amino acids necessary for healthy living. Recent studies have shown that the Basenji breed does better when given small amounts of high quality meat."
http://www.tajirikennels.com/index/basenjis.htm"In “kidney failure,” he says, the dog retains fluid, buffers, protein and metabolic waste products. In Fanconi Syndrome, the dog’s renal tubules are not performing their proper job of filtering buffers, protein and nutrients back into the system, and these protein, buffers, nutrients and water are being “slushed on through,” unutilized, at a great rate.
A Fanconi dog must be given additional protein, water, nutrients, and buffers to maintain the integrity of all of the organs; whereas a dog in “kidney failure” needs to have Iess protein, fluids, etc."
