I once had a pup under treatment at the Bristol Veterinary hospital. When they finally sorted the problem I was told now you'll be able to give him real food meaning kibble!1 I always feed raw and whatever but never complete dog food. Having said that it seems that over here we get a new dog food manufactutrer every month and all claim that theirs is the best!!

And you can search the forum for lots of information about shots and what is or is not needed. But as stated by renaultf1, rabies is a state required shot. Dogs get one as a puppy and then need another at 1 yr. After that it depends on your state, most are every 3yrs., but some (and some counties within a state) are every year

@AC~Akeyla: Well, we recieved an email from the coordinator of the B we want to adopt. She is ready to set up a home visit… I figure that's better than not hearing back from them. Huh? Also, what are they looking at when they come for a home visit? I'm happy to hear the good news. You have a good coordinator. When I first acquired my previous basenji the breeder suggested putting paper towels in the bottom of the crate (she can tear them up to her hearts content and even if she eats some if shouldn't cause problems) and to give frozen marrow bones to keep her occupied. There are also lots of interactive toys available that also keep her occupied.

You could try a little yogurt. Cook up some yams in place of the rice.

Thank you all for your help with our issue. I will take her the vet on Monday to find out what is going on and then I willl update everyone. If it's not blood what else could it be? Even if it's not blood should I still worry? Any questions I should I ask the vet?

@AC~Akeyla: We will be getting Akeyla spayed next Friday. I know that B's need to be put asleep like a sighthound. I was curious if something bad could happen if the were not put to sleep in that particular way? And also if vets know about the special way? Discuss it with your Vet, that is the best thing you can do… and by all means have pre blood work done... that way you have a base line if (and that is a really big "if") something were to happen or she seemed to be having a reaction.... I would give iot to them at both feeds and maybe start with a teaspoon, and if it doesn't seem to work great up the serving size to tablespoon. I think if I remember right, that it goes three teaspoons to 1 tablespoon, so if you want you could add a teaspoon until you are ath the tablespoon size..makes sense I hope

I've noticed that dogs, including Basenjis, eat more and get chubby if they were abandoned and lived in the streets for a while, especially when they were young pups. One of my Basenjis and one of my rescues have cast iron stomachs, they aren't picky eaters, and they love food! One of my Basenjis doesn't eat a lot and I often hand feed her so I know she is getting enough nutrients.

@tanza: of course when you have more then one… you usually find "all" of them wanting in on the "goodies".... Ha, ha, ha…ain't that the truth! Rarely have to do a cleanup at my house when it happens for that very reason...I usually can't get there quick enough before the others start feasting away! :D:D:D

So we took Akeyla to the vet for her heartworm check…everything went great! We will start her on heartworm prevention today :)

Very cute, I can't wait for my next but am shooting for 2 years until the next addition. Dude is my boy, my first basenji and I hope to add a girl winter 2010, she will be called Ono, Hawaiian for the best. Can't wait for pics!
