Displaced Aggression

Basenji Talk

  • Ever since we got our second basenji, Stick, we've notice what we feel is displaced aggression with our older girl, Sophie. I walk my dogs on a split leash which normally works well from us. BUT if we see another dog being walked Sophie will immediately turn on Stick and attack him. Poor Stick always puts up with it and never fights back. I am now very aware of our surroundings and can usually see the other dogs before Sophie does. In which case I change directions so she can't see them. I've tried stopping and making her sit and focus on me while the dog is passing but it doesn't seem to work. A few weeks ago when I tried this method instead of attacking Stick she bit my boot because I was the closest thing to her. I want to stress that she never acts like this at any other time. It really is a Jekyll and Hyde situation. It's almost like she doesn't know who I am or where she is until the other dog is out of sight. Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions?

  • Mine are doing it when meeting with my neighbors dog ,sometimes I have treads in my pocket and that works to grab their attention.

I know this is an old topic, but when my Stella plays, she can get a little aggressive too. she's drawn blood a few times! She's probably a little over a year old now; It didn't take long at all to train her to stop, all I have to do is tell her 'no biting' and she'll stop. She also loves to lick my wounds and bite off the scab that SHE made.

Wow, I am surprised to see so many posts regarding the aggression thing. I have a 3 yr. old who thinks she is the queen of the universe, and is totally the alpha with her b-mix sister, but she plays well with others at dog parks and elsewhere, with the exception that there are certain B's she will get snarky with. We've never been able to figure out what it is she doesn't like in some of her own kind. It doesn't happen every time but it makes the other owners nervous when it does happen, so I have stopped going to the dog park where the B's she has trouble with go. There are very rare situations with other type dogs. The only time she will start to "hair up" in a park is when she is tired from running and resting behind my legs at a picnic bench. If a dog comes up to get to her by going around my legs then, she will growl and threaten; I believe this is "go away I'm resting and get away from my person" because she doesn't come out fighting but sounds very serious about the whole thing. Also, if another dog tries to "mate," she will quickly sit down, turn around and snarl her displeasure, but won't push it any further. I do think basenjis may not have much patience with dogs they consider their inferiors.
