    . . . with a new title! Yesterday I was entered in an agility trial about 2.5 hours from where I live. I set the alarm early but as I went to bed that night the weather looked ominous. I got up very early, got dressed watched the cars ice skating on tv, looked at the darkness and went back to bed, opting to sacrafice my first run. I did make it up there for my second run and Zest! got her third leg of her OAJ title in what can only be described as a perfect run. If I had drawn the perfect path for her to take, it would have been the path she did indeed take.

    I spent last night up there and while we did not qualify in Excellent, she did have 2 very nice runs. And I saw a bald eagle fly over my car on the way to the trial. Ahhh, the joys of living in Colorado.

    Thanks, actually I picked the name before I picked the puppy. I wanted a name that was unique to the agility and the basenji worlds and the word "zest" seemed to fit that and it was so much fun to say. When I started entereing agility trials for her, I added the ! because I figured I'd be yelling her name anyway. <gg>Now I tell people I named her Zest! because she adds flavor and color to my life. ;)</gg>

    It certainly is a name that would stand out to me in the trials… its funny, with every dog I have ever owned I have always picked out the name before the puppy! Neat story, thanks for sharing:)

I took her back when it was empty and allowed her to roam the area, smell, and get a feel for it. Then she understood. Lots of different dog smells. This wasn't anyone's yard or territory -- it clicked. The next time we went there were just a couple of dogs and her reaction was totally different. She loved it! And still does! Are there "bad dogs" there? Some, but in general this has been a very positive socializing treat for doodle. We don't go every day, but 3-4 trips a month seems like a good balance (to keep it fun and not let her think she's in charge there). I always try to make sure doodle gets to do something special. A (really long) walk, off-leash time in the woods, the dog park, or down to the water (we live near the ocean)... something random so she never really knows what's going to happen, even if it's a day when we just chill.

    A dremel is a one-off expenditure ! And you can do his nails weekly instead of making costly appointments ! Some Basenjis are definitely cuddle-boys or girls. Some more aloof. My Keeper is very much in the former category, Hoover is very much more aloof. The Cat That Walks By Itself. In the house Loki is probably trying to be a lap dog because if he is - well, he is getting more attention than the Yorkie, isn't he ! Basenjis are great strategists. You'll have great fun with the pair of them !

    Polar Fleece is a better choice, I agree… or sturdy beds/mats for the crate... you really need to see how she does with bedding, none of my Basenjis were bedding killers. And the crate should be in the room where you sleep, next to your bed.... then you are right there to deal with any issues.

    I have always feed morning and evening… if by chance you are free feeding that will add to your problem of trying to get her on a schedule.

    My advice besides the crate training is to empty him before you leave. Make time to go on a short walk until he goes potty before you leave. My dogs sometimes will poop three times on a short walk. They actually strain to get everything out of them to mark as much as the neighborhood as they can. Our female even backs up and pees on trees. If the he is empty & maybe give him a chewy to keep him busy, and a really nice blanket to sleep on. They love snuggling certain things. He's going to have a hard time pooping/peeing in the house if he has nothing inside of him. [image: P1020271.jpg]
