Finishing the old year . . .

Basenji Training
  • . . . with a new title! Yesterday I was entered in an agility trial about 2.5 hours from where I live. I set the alarm early but as I went to bed that night the weather looked ominous. I got up very early, got dressed watched the cars ice skating on tv, looked at the darkness and went back to bed, opting to sacrafice my first run. I did make it up there for my second run and Zest! got her third leg of her OAJ title in what can only be described as a perfect run. If I had drawn the perfect path for her to take, it would have been the path she did indeed take.

I spent last night up there and while we did not qualify in Excellent, she did have 2 very nice runs. And I saw a bald eagle fly over my car on the way to the trial. Ahhh, the joys of living in Colorado.

  • Wow, what a way to end the year, congrats to you and Zest!

  • Congratulations! By the way, totally off topic but I love the name Zest- it is so unique and upbeat!

  • Thanks, actually I picked the name before I picked the puppy. I wanted a name that was unique to the agility and the basenji worlds and the word "zest" seemed to fit that and it was so much fun to say. When I started entereing agility trials for her, I added the ! because I figured I'd be yelling her name anyway. <gg>Now I tell people I named her Zest! because she adds flavor and color to my life. ;)</gg>

  • It certainly is a name that would stand out to me in the trials… its funny, with every dog I have ever owned I have always picked out the name before the puppy! Neat story, thanks for sharing:)

  • WTG! LOL Zest lives up to the name!

  • Congrats to both of you! Wonderful news.

@jkent said in 4 months old and difficult potty training: sometimes just looks at me when I give her the command to eat it, not understanding. She might be confused about the signals. Try eating a cracker while she's watching and then, setting her bowl down and telling her it's "okay" to eat. In the dog world, the boss (Alpha dog, or leader) eats first. Then the other dog(s) get to eat.

A dremel is a one-off expenditure ! And you can do his nails weekly instead of making costly appointments ! Some Basenjis are definitely cuddle-boys or girls. Some more aloof. My Keeper is very much in the former category, Hoover is very much more aloof. The Cat That Walks By Itself. In the house Loki is probably trying to be a lap dog because if he is - well, he is getting more attention than the Yorkie, isn't he ! Basenjis are great strategists. You'll have great fun with the pair of them !

Is she flying with you or in cargo? I would suggest getting a different type of crate and start over with training. (hopefully that will get rid of some/many negative connections she has with the current crate.) Crate Games dvd has some excellent suggestions for getting a dog into a crate and liking it. If you can't get another crate, you could you take the current crate apart and do some crate games then put it back together and start over with the start of the crate games. Go slowly. If you're thinking about drugs, you will absolutely need to do one or more "test" runs before the flight.

He has a wheat/ beef/salmon/duck allergy and his tummy gets upset & bubbly. He can only eat his food no treats. So goes where he is starving to not wanting to eat. He has had this most of his life. He has been doing well on the Blue Buffalo Lamb & rice, but manages to leave the life bits. I can feed him a handful of food and out come the life bits, that our other dog Hoover vacuums up.
