Death Toll this week

Basenji Talk

  • So far this week I have lost a Nunchuck and a Nokia Mobile Phone. The murderer being Trouper!!!

I wasn't really surprised by the Nunchuck as it was on the table and he is the master at pulling things off from there. My mobile however was a bit of a shock. It fell out of my pocket and was on the sofa for no more than 5 mins. It quite often lies around the sofa along with the TV remote, cordless phone etc and nothing ever happens.

One bite was all it took. Screen smashed. I have just spent all evening trying to retrieve all the valuable data and photos from the phone.

I know. I know. Keep everything out of reach. Well I've lived with Bs for 9 years now but still can't get the hang of keeping things tidy. :o

  • Houston

LOL!! Sounds about right! Pearls is good at chewing things, one of her favorite activities!

  • Benkura, look at the positive. Does this mean you can try to sign up for a new, cheaper cell phone plan? :)

  • "Nothing ever happens" !! Well until it does, of course!!

At least you can't blame my girl this time - but on second thoughts Trouper is half Antefaa!!!

    Whats a Nunchuck, Benkura!?

  • Is the only broken part the screen and/or LCD? No fault of my dog, I finally cracked my screen on my motorola droid after a year of random drops and no issue. Terrible first day of the new year ;) But there's repair shops that will fix that for a pretty fair fee compared to replacing the whole thing. And actually since I didn't pay for insurance on my phone (verizon charges 6/month and on top of that an 89 replacement phone fee) its cheaper! Found one place that charges 80 bucks to replace the screen.

  • Patty, a nunchuck is part of the remote control for a Nintendo Wii.

It's mostly the LCD part of the phone - it still switches on - but there are a few deep teeth marks else where. I don't think the phone is worth fixing. It was a Nokia 6303. I am looking at replacing it with a smartphone Nokia N8 :D

You can bet your bottom dollar though that I won't let the new phone out of my sight!!!

  • Yes Patty, it was definitely the Antefaa coming out in him :D

  • I think your pup was helping you get your upgrade on. You should thank em! :) Smartphones FTW!

  • First Basenji's

I am counting my blessings…...we have had our Basenji, Mojo, for 2 years, and the only thing he chewed up (besides his toys) were a pair of my boots, when he was very young!

  • Hmmm…. my girls have "eaten" at least 6 pairs of glasses.... sigh... our fault for leaving them where they could get to them... and they go after the "ear" pieces because it has your human odor/taste/scent on them...ggg....

Lucky so far they have left the TV controls alone.... so surely that will be the "kiss" of death!!!! LOL

As they say, you leave them around... they are free game

  • First Basenji's

Oh my goodness- I am very lucky!!! Before we got Mojo, we did a lot of research on Basenji's, and found they do like to chew pretty much everything. I am so surprised he hasn't done much damage. He's a very mild tempered Basenji, maybe that has something to do with it.

  • hahaha Hope has a thing for the Wii remotes and nunchucks too. They are put out of her reach after seeing her sneaking off with a white cord trailing behind her… hmm lol we saved it from its fate lol

  • I have never had a problem with the remotes or nunchuks. However, the kleenex box and the plastic building blocks from my grandson, now-that's a delicacy!

  • Kiz is able to remove the silicone skins from the wii remotes without hurting the remotes and turns on the wii. I'm thinking we should get an xbox with kinect so he can be the controller.

  • LOL Yodel4Me. I'd pay good money to see that :)

  • It seems to me that the Basenjis are the controllers any way without any help fromb Kinect!!

We made the mistake of getting a cheap pen with horizontal wiring ($35). Then we got this as recommended by Michelle Lennon ($99). He can't get out of it, though for several weeks he could squeeze through. At 13 weeks, he's too big for that now. Regalo 192-Inch Super Wide Adjustable Baby Gate and Play Yard, 4-In-1, Bonus Kit, Includes 4 Pack of Wall Mounts Regato 192" gate I also recommend her "Dream Dog" course. I trained 9 years ago with a local pro, but this is more detailed and better organized. Takes a month for a person to get through the course, worth every penny. She also offers a lot of free content, and if you go to the "pro" level for another $75 per month, one can access three weekly zoom meetings with her and co. and get questions answered 24/7 via their facebook interface. For what one gets, it's a real bargain. I used it for a month and found it very helpful. How to Train a Dream Dog To be sure, I don't agree on every detail. For example, I do no-leash walks in woods; they don't recommend that. Also, her course is not really designed to train an active "outdoor" dog, but more for an "indoor" dog. She opposes electric fences and doggy doors. I've had great experiences for 9 years with both and will continue to use them (started electric fence training last week and making good progress). But otherwise, her course lays out solid foundation work. She trains you to be a puppy trainer and provides all the real-time help you could need. Happy training!

Hi, Socialization was one of my worries and I wanted to get it right, get your friends over and have them wear hats and bags and anything and everything at different times, what we did at home was just getting the household socialization such as umbrellas, pots, rubbish bins etc started and if you have friends with vaccinated and friendly dogs get them around. There is a lot of socialization you can do before your pup is fully vaccinated at home, rubbish day is a good day for standing at the gate watching the big noisy trucks go by, picking up the bins and banging them down, watching the mower, hearing the motorbike being started. Just remember let your pup take it's time don't force it when it is uncomfortable. Our 6 month old boy is doing great and is quite a confident fella. At 14 weeks we did puppy class for 7 weeks and only started going to a dog park at 4 months and he automatically knew how to be a dog when he was with the other dogs. Good luck.

that calculator says Malu will be about 29lbs, which is still pretty big. I was hoping he would be a little larger anyway, most of my friends have larger dogs, labs mixes and hound mixes. So he should have no problem "hanging with the big dogs". I was browsing through that book a little more. It actually has some pretty interesting data on different experiments they did with the 5 different breeds. Its kind of neat to see how the Basenji's compared to some of the other breeds.

thanks all!! Jenson and Kalusha both have a "rest-day" today, jenson was very active in the woods the last couple of days, so his limping got a bit worse, and Kalusha was totaly confused yesterday, so time out for one day for them both! @curlytails: That's also very chilling to hear about the Ibizans getting stolen. I hate to wonder about the kind of black market that deals in stolen pedigree dogs. I imagine the burglars targeted the breeder specifically for her dogs? Seems like your everyday thief would find it too difficult to make off with live loot! well the "raterno's"that were also stolen is not even an official recognized dog, only in spain they are recognized as far as I know, and the Ibizans are not of high value there as well as they are quite common type of dog, ofcourse the pedigreed ibizans are rare, even in spain, but they did not steel the pedigrees with them, so we have really no clue why they have been stolen and it really looks like they knew what they were after because they targeted this breeder indeed. It makes it even worse that these 2 male ibizans were from their last litter, they are older people and did not want to breed anymore and now these last pups are stolen :(
