@noodle: Mmmmmm…the smell of singeing dog fur - I know it well! :D Mine sit so close to the small fan heater in my bedroom, it makes their whiskers go curly! The basenji my brother had when I was in high school would sleep UNDER our Franklin woodstove in the basement - Franklin stoves have higher legs than regular woodstoves. When Zeke would come out for water, you couldn't touch him as his fur would burn your hand.

We use the muttluks for Mowgli and Miika and they do stay on, they are on the second pair already as they used them so much the old ones have holes in the bottoms - i think this is mainly from the salt on the roads. The pups love them and don't mind wearing them and are a must up here in northern Alberta.

All great suggestions. Also, for peace of mind, ask which emergency vet they use and check out that facility as well. We also include an unwashed T-shirt (one from each of us)that we have slept in for a few days so our smells are concentrated. Ask if someone plays with the dogs when they're turned out to run, and ask if there is a washer and dryer on sight in case of an accident so the bedding gets washed. All my above suggestions have come from experience and grant me some peace when I have to leave my dogs. That said, I'm still a BIG baby when I have to leave the "kids".:o

I bought coats from Ruffwear for my boys and have been really pleased with the coats especially since we have gotten so much snow.

When Lillie had stitches in her paw, I needed to keep the paw dry. I tried everything. What worked and fit the best were natural rubber, waterproof dog boots by Pawz. 12 disposable boots…slips on, stays on. I believe they were around $17.00. Their website is www.PAWZDOGBOOTS.com. Of course, as soon as we came in from our walk, Lillie was trying to get them off. Another waterproof dog boots we tried were waterproof nylon boots with non-skid soles and Velcro straps for a snug fit. $9.99 They did not fit as snug as the pawz. There is no website on the package. The company is Signature Fashion Pet Collection…#130 Waterproof Woof Boots. Good luck! Jodie:)

I put my Buttons in a K9 Top Coat Arctic Fleece Jogging suit which covers her belly and all four legs. They are really warm and perfect for our early morning walks when it's very cold here in MO. Size 3 fits most Basenji's like a glove and it does not cramp their style. Only problem is that they are quite expensive but Her Majesty Buttons worries not about little things such as that as long as she is warm and toasty.
