Kongs

Basenji Talk

  • Do any of you have a Kong for your dog? Do they like them? Callie will carry hers to me, and plop it on my lap, and I will fill it for her, then she will proceed to push it up against a wall, and get what she can out of it, then carry it to the kitchen, where she will actually throw it, and bounce it, to get what comes out! She does this over and over, till it is empty!

  • Yes, I have several kongs! My Magnum has mild separation anxiety, and the kongs help keep him busy when alone (he's an only dog:( ). I generally fill 'em up with a variety of stuff and freeze 'em. He only gets them when he's going to be alone, so it kinda balances out for him: "Okay, they're gone, I don't really like it, but, hey, lookie what I get!"

I've seen him a few times do what your dog does, it can get pretty comical what they'll try to get the last bits out! Usually, though, it's empty by the time I get home.

  • What do you fill the kongs with? Peanut butter, cheese, doggie treats? I have been thinking about getting one for Jojo but not sure what to put in it. Terry

I usually stuff Magnum's with his morning meal, top it off with peanut butter or squirty cheese and freeze. Layering food in it takes longer for the dog to get through, though.

  • I absolutely LOVE kongs! I have one for each of my babies (2 basenjis and 1 Collie) They love them and I usually put Peanut butter in them…which takes them a while to get through!

  • but not tainted peanut butter right? i hope everyone is checking theirs i had a jar of bad stuff, (peter pan with 2111 on the lid) luckily it was unopened! shame on me, i almost always buy jif….wont make that mistake again.

  • Cali loves her Kong:) I fill it up every morning before I leave work with a variety of stuff so it takes her a while to get the food out. She really likes when I mix her kibble with peanut butter and stuff it in her kong.

  • I am the first to eat out of the jar, so no they don't get bad stuff! I will not give them special treats (human type foods) that I am not willing to eat. Granted, I'd never eat their food but hey…we're all picky! LOL

  • Hollie loves her Kong. Especially if it's filled with peanut butter!!! I put some of her hard food and peanut mixed together in it. She loves to lick the peanut butter then throws the kong to get the food out.

  • I need to try putting their food in the Kong with the peanut butter, that is an interesting idea.

I put peanut butter in the little hole and then fill the Kong with chicken broth and freeze it.

  • Gbroxon,
    Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
That is just what I needed. Kong Paste and peanut butter just wasn't workin!

  • I buy the Canine Carryouts, in the Beef flavor? They are soft, and you can really squish them down in there! It takes quite a while, for Callie to get it out of there! :)

Hi there -- not sure if everyone uses this strategy but i soak some kibble in water and mix in a little peanut butter (so that simba isn't getting too much salt) and then stuff the Kong with that before freezing -- lasts longer and still has the same nutrients as his meals. We have the puppy and the classic and I think they're effectively the same. He also LOVES the blue kong squeaky ball. @schmerla

My undergraduate degree was in geophysics with a minor in applied math. I name all my Basenjis after Indian mathematicians. My current Basenjis are Madhava of Sangamagrama (Madhava for short) and Bramagupta (Bramagupta for short). They do respond to their "short" names.

**We have a few smalls and few mediums. Keep them filled with peanut butter in the freezer all the time. They last about a half day when they're in their crates and we're at work. They're like the special treats we give them once in a while to change things up a bit.**
