Health insurance?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • just curious… does anybody actually buy health insurance for your dogs? which plan? is it worth it? i imagine there are tons of exclusions, so i just wonder if it would actually be very beneficial.
    thanks!

  • We did have insurance through VPI pet insurance. For a 4 years we used to pay around 250.00 per year. It covered little of regular visits . The insurance will beneficial if there is a expensive surgical procedure involved. ( they have guidelines about what is covered ).This yr they wanted to increase our premium and decrrase our benefits. We did not think it made sense anymore for us to keep it so we concelled it.

Please be careful about all the fine print and ask them tp give you the catalog that shows you what is covered in the plan that u interested in . This way you can calculate if it is wroth taking the policy. Good Luck

  • We have vpi for our two B's and have been very pleased with the plans. M

  • I plan on putting some money into a savings account monthly, about $75. All the fine print scares me, and I don't want the hassles if something I thought was covered is not.

@vickilb: My little BRAT, Hunter, LOVES to make his own trails when we go hiking. Last year he got one of those Foxtail seeds stuck way the heck down his eardrum. He had to be put under because it was resting on his ear drum and he wouldn't hold still for the vet!!! $500 later, he is as good as new. Do I take him to the same hiking area, you betcha!!!! Those foxtails are BAD! We have them here in the summer, and they are everywhere, so there is not much we can do. Yes, that kind of vet procedure can cost quite a bit. What we don't do for our fur babies!

The fanconi test needs to be ordered from the OFA website, https://secure.offa.org/cart.html Have you talked to Nilo's breeder about health testing. Without pedigree information his tests alone don't provide a very complete picture since disorders like PRA are late onset.

@WBL: You do sound frustrated, if you are still feeling unsatisfied you could contact Dr Jean Dodds, she has done wonders for helping dogs with thyroids disorders. Here is a website that has contact info, and how to send in samples if you want [removed ad link] If you have the results (full panel print out and you should be able to get that from your Vet) you can just send that to Dr. Dodd's, she will read the results and give you a recommendation… Don't really think that she is all that much better then others, however she does see many B Thyroid results. I have sent her results from MSU and she agreed there was no need for supplements at that time.

The BHE can be found at: http://www.BasenjiHealth.org or http://www.BasenjiHealthEndowment.org. To inagurate our new website, the Basenji Health Endowment is pleased to announce that it has directly funded Dr. Gary Johnson of the University of Missouri to develop a marker-based test for Fanconi Syndrome. You may read the complete press release at: http://www.BasenjiHealth.org/bhe042007.pdf And also there are links if you would like to donate to the Health Endowment… this is a very important break through for our breed and especially for breeders. For anyone that has had or knows of a Fanconi Affilicted Basenji.. knows what a terrible affilication this is.... and for us to finally start to get a handle on it is something we have been waiting for..... Please all remember strip test your Basenjis... at least once a month....
