Sharing water or drying you off?

    First, who else has basenji who must rub against you after a shower, especially wet hair? Sayblee and Arwen always went nuts, contorting to rear and rub their bodies, bite my hair etc. Cara is interested but mostly licks. I have never figured out if they are frantic to save me from being wet or frantic to share precious water.

    However, if you ever hear I have died some bizarre death and CSI is examining my body, please tell them why they find dog saliva in my hair.

    I think this is pretty common behavior for basenjis - my current beastie comes running when I shut off the shower so she can lick my feet and she goes nuts if I don't let her lick my wet hair.

    Roxy is interested in licking the water off me, Rocky is more interested in rubbing himself on the towel, he's tried pulling the towel off me more than once.

    Spring always inssits on licking me (her version of drying ) if i|'m wet in any way. She always takes this on as her personal job and she doesn't allow any of the others to do it. When any one is in the house who's jrecently washed their hair Gbala rubs her own scent all over their head!

    yep, we get licked to death (ha ha) as soon as we step out of the shower.

    if she cant wait if we have a bathtub she tries to lick us while we are in it ha ha.

    Ella does not dry us off, but she will go after any other wet dog. When we are walking near a creek with our Labrador friends she will crouch on the edge of the stream, torn between excitement and fear. But when a wet dog emerges from the creek, she will excitedly chase and nip and lick them.

    Cara has TRIED to activate the ice maker. She flies into the kitchen when she hears me use it because she loves to play soccer with ice, then eat it. I fear one day I'll have to put some kind of guard over the panel. Sigh.

    She looks a lovely dog and so wonderful that she is such good friends with Jibini. I hadn't realised that there was a difference in colours in the two standards - the UK standard is the same as the French I believe.

    Just a note here. Fish Oil vs. Flaxseed Oil Flaxseed oil contains more Omega-3's than fish oil. However, the Omega-3's in flaxseed oil are in an inactive form (ALA). Special enzymes are required to convert the inactive ALA into the active forms (EPA and DHA). Some animals, especially carnivores like dogs, do not have the required enzymes to do the conversion. Recent research shows that fish oil has more positive benefits on pets with disease, because the fatty acids contained in fish oil are readily available for use already in the converted form EPA and DHA. Particularly, fish oil has positive effects on dogs with inflammatory diseases, such as allergies, arthritis, kidney and heart disease, and cancer. Flaxseed oil does not seem to be as beneficial to dogs with inflammatory diseases. However, flaxseed oil seems to be anti-cancerous, and is also effective in improving the skin and coat conditions of dogs. Flaxseed oil can be a dietary source of soluble fiber. Increasing soluble fiber in the diet can help counter tendencies to constipation. Fish oil, therefore, is the preferred fatty acid supplement for dogs with inflammatory diseases. Flaxseed oil can be used to improve skin and coat conditions, and to counter constipation and perhaps inhibit cancer growth. Also flaxseed turns rancid quite quickly after it's ground up so it's best if you can grind only the amount needed and store the seeds in a glass jar in the frig.

    Paxton hates the water. He dreads going out in the rain. However, when we go to the park and the local labs are playing in the left over puddles, he has the time of his life in the water. He just loves it! We also fostered 2 other basenjis whom never seemed to mind the rain. The most recent was kept as an outside dog before the original family gave him up. That might have had something to do with it. It didn't matter if it was hot and dry, or pouring down rain turn to snow, he was just as happy to trot around outside.

    2 basenjis who share eating out of two bowls…they have one water bowl by food, one in master bedroom,one outside, all same bowls all have clean daily fresh water....and they only drink out of bowl in master bedroom. they cant wait to get inside and drink from that magic bowl. weird basenjis,just weird

    My Basenji is a mix, but she LOVES water- when it comes to swimming. She loves baths as long as you're touching her. She HATES rain. I have to carry her outside in the rain. But when we take her out hiking, she'll go swimming in creeks or lakes, and she loves swimming in the lake at the shelter when I take her out there. Her first swimming experience with me was an accident- guy had a lab and a weimernainer (don't know how to spell it) and was throwing balls in the lake for them to get. The 2 big dogs went after the ball, and Lucy went after them. She SCREAMED when she found herself in the lake, I had to jump in after her. But ever since then, she loves it. If I take her to the edge to sniff the water first and do a little paddle on the shore, she'll chase the ball right into the lake without an issue.
