Beeji had to go back to the vet hospital

  • Keep us posted. I'll keep you and Beeji in my thoughts.

  • Bella did the bumpy rash and swollen face thing… Some sort of allergic reaction?? She did it several times, but the swollen face only happened the one time! It literally scared me crazy!! She looked horrible with the swollen face!!! I had just left the Vets with her after her spay and she didn't have the rash or swelling, but 10 min later we watched as the bumps just kept popping out!!! then her eye started swelling, then her other one, etc... I was scared she would start having trouble breathing and scooped her up and went back to the vets... She was miserable, scratching and rubbing her face on the floor. We had to get the shot of Benadryl, same as you, etc. The Vet said it couldn't be from his office, tried to say it happened from something that she was exposed to on the way home (a ten minute drive)! But I think it has to be some sort of Lysol product with Bella... I cleaned the house and got the bump reaction twice since the incident and banned Lysol from the house! (I bet that Vet's office had been cleaning with a similar product). She hasn't had an episode since, thank God. I sure hope your baby feels better soon!

  • Thanks everyone for the warm wishes, it is now Saturday and Beeji woke up full of steam! He wolfed his breakfast, headed to the rack where his harness and lead are and then dashed to the front door and back to the rack.

I think he was trying to tell me something!! LOL

I finished my breakfast, got on my outdoor clothes, harnessed and leashed Beeji and off we went. Had a good long walk and are now back at home and Beeji is curled up on my bed and all is right with the world!!

    Aloha,
    Cheryl

  • Hooray! Glad to hear all is back to normal!!

  • Yes, that is great! Maybe he ingested something he is allergic to. I would just try to watch his diet in case he has another episode, that way it could be pinpointed. I am so happy Beeji is feeling better, he's such a cutie! How's the heartworm treatment going?

  • @bellabasenji:

    How's the heartworm treatment going?

Beeji just went in to the Vet Hospital today for round two of the treatment. I will be able to get him tomorrow afternoon. He so loves the techs out there, that he didn't even look back as they led him off!! I'm glad but also a bit sad! LOL.

Anyway, they will call me either tonight or in the morning to let me know how he is doing. Now we go back to keeping him as calm as possible. The meds sort of slow him down and he does feel lethargic for several days.

    But so far so good.

    Thanks!!

  • Will still keep fingers, toes and paws crossed for his speedy recovery. Keep us posted!

  • what a sweetie beeji must be. good luck! get well soon, beeji!

  • Sending out get well wishes to Beeji, prayers and support to you Cheryl Wordweaver…..hang in there.

  • Best of luck to you and Beeji

I always vary feeding time a bit. It is a trick I learned after the first show with my horse... He was not a happy camper when one of his classes delayed dinner time. Being less rigid with the time and more rigid with a routine has made the time change a non-issue (though the horses have not had to learn to sit, they do have to wait for me to give the 'eat' signal before they get their grain like my b's have to wait for their 'eat' command).

Bring your paperwork that the breeder gave you to your first visit because they will want to know some things like birth date, always (in the first year or so when lots of shots are administered) bring the vaccination record book Pam and Sheila gave you and ensure they make a copy of it and not just write it down..you will also want to update your copy as your pup receive shots so like I said..bring it so they can fill it in for you. Any questions you have regarding vaccinations I highly suggest asking your vet but also getting in touch with Pam to ask her opinion, she knows her dogs and her lines and she is better equipped than the vet to give you an honest evaluation on which to give. Also try to follow her guidance on neutering and spaying (if you plan to). I know with Oakley I followed their advice. It might be true or not but in my opinion basenjis tend to mature slower and I find they need more time for the growth plates to close before castrating is a wise choice.
  • Is this normal for a vet?

I don't think paying that amount is unreasonable to talk to a vet. The vet practice I go to is one of the best in my town and all three vets are usually booked full a couple weeks in advance (though they will always make time for emergencies). If I were to go just to speak to the vet I would expect to be charged something for taking time that she would otherwise be using to treat animals. That being said I would check out both vets. It doesn't hurt to shop around.

Under the covers, out of the covers, under the covers, out of the covers…....My husband has 3 of us to deal with (menopause is hell:eek:)!! Try buying a body pillow. It divides the bed and lets you sleep on your side with it between your knees which realigns the lower back and pelvis. If the dog takes it over, it slides away easily as opposed to trying to move a sleeping bag of cement. I have many lower back bone spurs and a ruptured disc. My pillow works wonders. Got my last one @ Walmart for $10.00.

I must add my vet to those who get kudos - Dr. Carlos Gandara at Companion Animal Hospital in Blaine MN. When EL D got sick, instead of "here's some antibiotics, come back in 2 days", he spent the entire evening going through test after test trying to address all the symptoms - he didn't give up until he had an answer (and it was right). He believes in "wellness exams" looking at all aspects of a pet, and when I brought Gossy in the other day, he discussed nutrition with me (yes I said nutrition - he talked about corn fillers and raw diets). While he doesn't subscribe yet to multi-year DHP vaccines (he does 2yr now), he has been doing his homework and knows the pros and cons. (And he knew basenjis only come into estrus once a year.) I have known many vets over the years and vets at the University vet hospitals but I'm absolutely impressed with Dr. Carlos - besides he's funny.

I have to agree with that agilebasenji, prong collars are not for Basenji's that I have ever seen, however, food seems to motivate them much better!
