Vet needed Toronto

    Hi,

    I'm purchasing a Basenji this upcoming weekend. I'm currently looking for a vet in Toronto that has experience with the breed. Does anyone know of any good vets in the Toronto area?

    Check with the breeder.
    They can most likely give you the name of a vet in your area.

    My Breeder has been very very helpful but the vets that she is familiar with are 1-2 hours from Toronto. I was hoping to find one in Toronto that may be familiar with Basenjis or willing to work with and learn about them.

    He's getting my Frankie, Pat. While I know outside the TO area, I don't know of anyone directly inside TO. We will just have to start interviewing the vets in his area. Matthew can interview them first and I can always do a phone interview. We are racing this weekend, so there may be someone there that may know of someone closer. It was just worth a shot in case someone on the forum lived closer to Matthew.

    @nick4 Sounds like an allergy or something biting him. For sure the vets and see what they say. Benadryl for sure, as far as I know it does no harm if you dose correctly.

    I'm puzzled because if she has the correct pliant skin for a Basenji, it would get fewer wrinkles if she was too fat. I stand to be corrected here but thats what happens to mine!! I think she looks very good and that she has no need to lose any weight. Her coat is gleaming. Congratulations to you for keeping her in such lovely condition! I've only ever had to remove ticks from our collies - the Basenjis have never had one but I can understand that you feel the need to give medicine but personally I only give conventional medicine to a Basenji if I (and my vet) consider it totally necessary.

    When I took my puppy to my vet, he said he had little knowledge of the Basenji, but he would start reading up on them. Since that time, he's thanked me for the opportunity, and says he is learning more all the time - at our last visit for final puppy shots he said he felt he was becoming quite an expert - if you come across a vet who doesn't have a lot of knowledge about them, he could quite easily love the challenge and become great on the Basenji issues. I told him I'd sent for the DNA marker kit and had Shaye tested (thank God, it was clear), and he launched into a really good discussion about the symptoms, illness, etc., and said he was glad I'd done that, but maybe in a while we would do some blood work to be sure of everything. I feel very confident with him now - so, a good vet with a love to be challenged can be an answer too.

    Though my dogs have not had a reaction to a vaccine, I tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to vaccines. I would rather give a benadryl to help prvent a reaction then wait and hope for the best. I say this because my cat had a severe vaccine reaction after his rabies shot. Within 20 minutes of the shot he was vomiting, the hair at the vaccination site fell out and the site became swollen. We had to rush him back to the vet to be treated for the reaction.
