Resource guarding chihuahua

Basenji Talk

  • @Kipawa: No flack here! I agree! Ive only seen ONE mild tempered Chi. Im not a huge fan of them…sure they're cute but ALWAYS seem to have a snarky attitude. Moms Chi Keelie is a drama queen and she also thinks she runs the house.

@roguejyme said in Basenji Mix Chihuahua What to know: everyone tells me ... wait, wait, wait.... is your dog part Basenji? Cattle dog? Jack Russell? You know who his parents are, so... he carries their genes. Do you suspect that you don't actually know who the parents are? If that might be true, then consider doing a DNA test. But if you are confident that those are his parents, then you already know the answer. Enjoy him for who he is. Yours.

I have notices with my guy it very much depends how the small dog acts around him. If the little one is confident and relaxed Watson treats them like any other dog and will play. If they are snarky and unsure he can become a little intense and I will step in and redirect him. He is always carefully supervised when we go to the dog park…the main place where he encounters other dogs... He enjoys playing with other dogs and is pretty social. I am careful not to allow him to meet other dogs while he is on leash since he is a bit leash reactive.

i think i got a pic of what you're talking about. my boy Zumi does this all the time with my other two dogs. he will stand over them, sometimes with hackles raised and posturing, or sometimes he just stands there over them, doing nothing at all. It doesn't seem to bother the other dogs, so i don't bother either. the dog he is standing over is only 6 months, but he is a highly aggressive dog, he doesn't seem to care that Zumi stands like this. Numerous times I had my 2 out for walks and people asked if they were Chihuahua or Fox terrier. "Basenji"?? It was always great to educate them especially when they at first would say "it's clean, doesn't bark and is the perfect size for my elderly mother who lives in an apartment". "Oh no no no, there's more to it than that".
