    I have never done agility but it looks like such fun. Hubby bought me a tunnel with chute and zoe took to it right away, within 10 minutes she was running through it no problem. Chief took a little longer but now seems to love it. Today hubby built a pvc jump using plans off the internet. Zoe is a jumper when I get home from work she jumps up into my arms and seems to love taking jumps. Chief on the other hand thinks it's too much work to even jump up on the couch or bed but with a little work today he finally seemed to be catching on. So now I have them running through the hoop and taking one jump. Eventually hubby wants to build most of the equipment. He wants to make the weave poles next but is there any order to introducing each new piece of equipment. Should I start with something else next? We dont plan to compete I just wanted something that would be fun for both the dogs and my family. Any tips would be appreciated.

    you know, when I started taking agility classes, it was just for fun, just to see what would happen, wasn't anticipating on actually competing with my dog. I'd say find a class and see where things go. It's really the best way to safely introduce your dog to obstacles. Of course now, 12 years later I'm sort of a basenji-agility junkie. So, it can be addicting.

    My hubby also enjoys building agility equipment, even bought and learned to use a welder.

    This was really funny. I could just see B's trying to decorate a tree. Hmmm….there would be a fight over the garland, all of the ornaments would be a chew toy/ball to chase around the house. There would be no lower limbs on the bottom of the tree and the presents (like mine) are missing corners of wrapping paper......

    Great to hear things have improved with Paco's toileting. We find that Malaika goes more when on the extending lead. Think she likes a bit of privacy.

    An Akita was the first dog we noticed that about. It was only a 10 month old, but it ran right next to Shaye, touching her all the way and looking down at her, and kept turning her to the right - I don't really know whether it was trying to get Shaye back to the place we were sitting or whether it was an aggressive move, but the result was the same. There is a Shepard here in the neighborhood we live in. When the man who walks it passes by us, he has to practically get down and physically hold the dog, because it tries to charge Shaye, ears back, hackles up, barking its head off. I don't know if it's like that with other dogs. At the park, there was a young Shepard who initially started playing with Shaye, but when Shaye went up like she does and came down around the dog's neck area, it lowered to the ground, bared its teeth, growled and scared me to death, I thought I was about to see Shaye get picked up and shaken to death in those jaws. It was not in a playing mood any more. So, I figure better safe than sorry. The man who owns the Akita who was herding Shaye told me Akitas are bred to be guard dogs and are naturally aggressive in initial meetings - so why he had that dog at a public park is beyond me.

    @bernicem77: I took Luke to his first puppy class tonight, and WOW. He would not listen to me at all. He was more concerned with what the other dogs were doing than what we were supposed to be doing. What kind of treats did you guys use when trainning your B's? Like I said in my previous post, this is similar to what happened with me. Zoni had to get comfortable in the room, sometimes took her about 10 minutes or so. After a while she got used to it but was still very interested in everyone else, particularly if we were moving around the room. Really practice on attention exercises at home and that will help. I went through a range of different treats, and I think I found for class the smellier was better for getting her attention. Although not smelly, beef lung worked really well for me too and it is easy to use and break up into little pieces. Little biscuit-type treats weren't high value enough for her in class.

    Bring a chair to sit in (as there will be a long waiting period in between runs), a crate for your B to hang out when you aren't running or walking around, snacks, plenty of water for you and your B and you should be all set! I will be in a black Toyota FJ Cruiser so if you see my truck you can park by me.
