Bathing your B

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • How often do you bathe your basenji? Other than wiping Senji off with a wet towel once in a while when he gets dirty, I only bathe him every other month or so. He's never had fleas or parsisites. (He's 11 years old) On Sunday, he started scratching his ears and around his neck like crazy. He also kept running from room to room and would jump on all the beds and sofas, and would hide behind the sofa. He kept waking me up every hour or two and needed to go outside. (The cold air seemed to make him feel better) I gave him 1/2 a benadryl and later gave him his scheduled dose of prednisone. I took him to the vet yesterday to see what was wrong. The vet said that he has seborrhea due to a bacterial infection and put him on a new antibiotic. (Simplicef) Last night, he was starting to act up again. I ended up shampooing him with Head and Shoulders and then put cortisone cream on the red, itchy spots. The vet said he might need to be bathed with a special medicated shampoo if this doesn't clear up.
Senji has been on a low protein diet due to his liver disease. He's not supposed to be eating beef or lamb or dark meat. The vet said a little chicken, turkey, or egg is ok.
    Any advice?

  • Gosh - Hope the vet helps Senji feel better. Duke gets a bath whenever he gets dirty - in summer, once a month. He's 1 yr. old. Right now, being winter - he doesn't get dirty because the ground is frozen. I don't know what would be a normal bath schedule for Basenjis. Sending a big wish to Senji for healing health.

Just shared a chicken nugget snack with both boys. Meds for the B- we split a 20mg tablet of Predinisone, for a morning/night dose,he's about 32 # now, gaining weight, eating and drinking lots. The other dog has been on regular meds- potassium bromide, gabapentin, and phenobarbitol. That regimen has yielded good results, but predictable- he'll still have 1 or 2 episodes a month. I've already worked out tentative plans for an endgame. Known a mobile vet doc and friend for years, I'll call on her when the time comes- she's helped in the past with a GF's kitteh. Planning a nice fish/bacon whatever dinner, and a heavy dose of probably gabapentin to sedate him. Then the euthanasia procedure. Then a large rock for me to crawl under. Allow me to share a quote. "And once the storm is over, you won't remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. And you may not be sure, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won't be the same person who walked in. That's what this storm is all about." Haruki Hurakami

Typically I have also advised those with dogs that 'appear' to have fanconi but are not basenjis or are mixes - to also have their vet fax the labs to Steve Gontos - he seems to have a handle on the chemistry of the disease in general that is helpful to those no B people

My Nika's eye got cloudy to the point of flicking your finger at it got no response then the eye turned blood red. Went to the eye vet and it turns out the lens inside the eye slipped. I had to give her other eye these very expensive eye drops called Xalatan or Travatan that kept the pressure down and the pupil small but even then the lens was moving around a little.

I agree, rawhide is bad for most dogs. I never give it to my 2.

Yay, there doesn't seem to be a need for the vet. Today was good and tomorrow will be better. Medjai started the day with a tiny bit of brown rice and the turkey bits picked out of the rice. Then he had some just plain beef also cooked plain and then later yet ate some of his kibble. He also had a only really soft poop. I never thought it would be so good to see him poop. He should be just fine, although I still have no idea what was wrong.

Yeah I can't believe he's allergic to chicken.
