We switched our 2 boys to raw from kibble about 6 months ago. The switch came because we were simply exhausted from walking them 3 times a day because they had loose stool (we don't have fenced in yard, so we need to walk them to go to the bathroom). Our vet recommended more fiber in their diet to help with loose stool. This intuitively just didn't resonate with us. Basenji are one of the most ancient breeds of dogโฆ why on earth would more fiber be a solution to their problem (I know the theoretical why, but logically it was counter-intuitive)? We read many sources or literature on the raw diet and thought this would be a good switch for them. Again, they are an ancient breed so moving toward raw foods seemed appropriate and logical. It took that about a month for them to get really accustomed to eating raw chicken quarters, rabbit halves or pork shoulders but now they have no problem gulping their meal right down, bone and all (for those of you who don't feed raw, gulping is a normal behavior and bone is an essential part of the diet). Their digestion issues have vanished and we've even seen marked improvement in their destructive behavior. Two super happy boys now, two super happy Basenji owners!!
What's your b's favorite food?

My Tobias loves peanut butter! I always mix his dry food w/a little bit of peanut butter and put it in his kong, he loves it and it keeps him occupied for a while. He also loves plain yogurt, and buttermilk. I have heard from my vet that the enzymes in both of these are very good for their digestive systems, just like their good for ours.

Definately steak, or lamb chop. And she loves warm milk.

Oh, that's the B's favorite, doesn't mean they get to taste it very often.:D

OK - so some B's are lucky enough to get gourmet food. I thought I'd try some of the Merrick brand canned dog food. I can't believe the food in there . . . Thanksgiving Dinner; Grammy's Pot Pie; Wild Buffalo Grill, etc. I opened a first can yesterday and mixed a third of the Venison Holiday Stew with 1/2 cup of his kibble. Duke was going nuts waiting for me to finish mixing. Needless to say he ate it all. I'm not a fan of canned dog food, but once in awhile - OK.
Question about after the eating is done. I've noticed when Duke thoroughly enjoys some extra cuisine with his kibble that he will clean his face completely - wiping his muzzle with his front paws, then he rubs his face along the sofa bottom, and then further more taking advantage of a blanket to do some face spinning. Does your B's take that much time cleaning up after their meal? I've just noticed this about Duke since having the canned food. He had another third of it this evening. Some doggy-wipes are going on my list! Another Basenji quirk? :p

We just do a third can everytime too. Abbey gets an upset tummy if we overdo it. She does the clean up thing too, wipes her muzzle on the carpet, then sits down to clean her paws. She likes to do the heavy duty paw cleaning at bedtime and gets between each toe and the pads. After that she cleans her tummy.

LOL - That is so funny! I am picturing a Garfield in Abbey.

Oh Storm and Nik LOVE the canned Merrick's food - buffalo is their favorite! I've found that 1/4 can does the trick over their kibble - it is rich stuff, and can lead to unpleasant odors from the posterior area if they get too much

? - So this is why Stormie races between my legs after he eats and rubs his muzzle on my legs!

Lexi LOVES lima beans. It's so odd. And the one food she'll wag her tail for is a yeast roll from Logan's RoadHouse. I don't blame her on that one. They are soooo good! She likes peanutbutter, but peanutbutter ice cream makes her crazy! She'll do anything for it! She refuses to eat Frosty Paws though. She also hates lettuce and will RUN from bananas. One of her favorite breakfasts is a piece of cinnamon raisin toast with butter. She likes the crust. Pretzels make her instantly throw up. She turns her nose up to popcorn. She LOVES to lick my yogurt cup when I'm finished with it. Strawberries on the bottom with nestle crunch is her favorite.

We recently bought some of that brand and we mix it with the kibble, it looks pretty good and the dogs love it. Buffalo was a big hit at our house as well.
So Stormie wants to know when Cleo is inviting him over for dinner!
Could you imagine the grumbles coming out of those two together?:D
The dogs have had a little Fillet Mignonโฆ...just a little. They do seem to know when we start the grill, some tasty leftovers seem to follow.

my B can't eat too much table food as it makes her tummy upset but she tries to eat everything. I haven't seen anything she doesn't like. I thing her favorite thing to eat(besides the usual TP, paper towels/plates and beanie babies) she loves canned tuna and turkey pepperoni.

We feed the same exact amount! And anything more than 1/4 of a can & the odor can kill us
Oh my! That would be a snark fest and a half!
Oh my C3PO also snarks when he eats!!!! He sounds like a pig eating slop LOL My Topaz is MUCH more refinedโฆlicking & chewing very dainty

jys - so glad I'm not the only who has noticed the unpleasant side effects from Merricks! lol!

I think the sounds coming out Nik and Storm's mouths at dinner time would probably make a pig envious!
BB- a happy helmet! lmao!

I'll go from 1/3 to 1/4 can. Last night, Duke was standing on the sofa playing with me when all of the sudden he . . . POOTED! His own poot scared him. He turned around to see what was there - couldn't find anything, but he did alot of sniffing . . . and looked embarrassed!
