Going under the blade

  • The vet can give you pain meds that will make her sleepy. I recommend that.
Thank you for getting your pet fixed…its the right thing to do.

  • Actually, when my girl Ruby was spayed (she is very active), the vet recommended AGAINST pain meds so that she would take it easy because she was feeling some pain.

Honestly, the first 2 days she was pretty subdued and after that I gave her meaty bones from the butcher in her crate to keep her calm and from doing the b500 with my b-boy Brando.

  • When I had my Shaye spayed, she was sent home with little dispensers of honey tasting pain liquid - I gave it to her once a day for five days. Although she is a VERY active girl, and actually had two operations at once, the spaying and fixing a belly button hernia, she did not over-lick the stitches, and did rest more. She was no problem at all and healed well. I think they are aware when they need to take it easy because of something like that. Good luck with the spay.

I totally agree, if they feel some pain they will take it easy …. I use pain meds only the first night after a spay (including herina repair if needed)... and then none (obviously unless there are problems). And like renaultf1 says, they typically take it easy on their own....

  • The most difficult thing for my girls is the no jumping for a week. Even though it hurts they will still do it. Mostly, just provide things like a stuffed Kong or meaty bones that she can work on for awhile and stay still. Rather than feeding from a bowl during her recovery, consider hand feeding for calm behavior.

As for pain meds, if she is painful then give them. Some make them sleepy, some don't. Do watch for reactions to the pain meds. My one girl cannot be given morphine because she has a bad reaction to it and it makes her very uncomfortable.

  • I remember the day back from surgery. Never have I seen Kananga so tired before. The very next day he was his normal self, which made it very difficult to keep him from jumping. Ivoss has the right idea, keep them preoccupied with something that keeps them calm.

  • thanks for the advice,,its going to feel weird without her around for a few hours,we'll be worried until she back in our arms,it will be interesting to see how the others react when she comes home, they'll know somethings different and shes hurt in some way,if you know what i mean, ill let you know how its going

  • hi all
just to let you know all went well, was alittle out of it , but made up for the next day, sure keep her from bouncing around..thats one for the myth buster..:)

  • Pleased to hear that all went well - I know just the problem with jumping, pain has never stopped mine!!

  • Glad everything went well for Isis

It's funny how Lillie refuses to go outside in the rain to do her business. Surprise yesterday when it was raining, she spotted the rottweiler who lives down the block. She ran outside on my deck to get a good view of him. Hmm, what's that all about?:) Thankfully, it has stopped raining (at least for awhile) so my husband and son just took Lillie out for a long, long walk. She is so funny! Jodie:)

My Hollie girl eats from the bowl sometimes and sometimes she takes a few minutes to another room. She constantly "hides" her dogfood, in corners, under a doormat, under my bed pillows, etc. I don't know if this is something that all basenjis do, or if it is because she had been a stray when I adopted her. Either way, she is certainly entertaining.
