Heart of the Savannah and August Magic by Veronica Anne Starbuck

Basenji Talk

  • Has anyone read these basenji gems? I finished Heart of the Savannah recently and am half way through August Magic. I just love these books! If I weren't already a dedicated basenji slave, these books would've made me one in a hurry!!

  • Hi Lorraine!
I'm glad you're enjoying them. I need to make some time and read my two. I'm gonna move them to my bed side table now.

  • Hi Laura - you're going to love those books! I can't wait for you you to read them! They're one of the nicest gifts I've gotten! Thank-you so much!

  • I loved August Magic - I still have to read Heart of Savannah. (I'm reading them backwards.) They were a gift from one of my dog-crazy friends, although she's never had a basenji.

  • I have never heard of them but I will have to check them out!

  • I just discovered August Magic but haven't read it yet - now I'll add Heart of Savannah to my library list. Thanks for the tip.

  • OMG…I just looked for these on line. They are out of print and I can get one at about $11.00, but the other is listed at about $185.00. My local libraries don't carry it either. Any suggestions? Looking for a unique Xmas gift for my daughter.

  • I think "Andrew" (Carrie) just got August Magic for her bday. Maybe she'll give us a review when she reads it. I wonder if she knows where her mom got it…

  • I just saw August Magic on Amazon.

Are you sure they are out of print? Check direct from the supplier at http://www.basenjimagic.com/. The order form comes up just fine there.

I did indeed read it while in England…. cried the ENTIRE book. Literally. I was just bawling on the crowded commuter train during rush hour from York to Manchester England. Very quick, easy read, but very sweet. It made me miss my kids 10x more than I already did & it made me feel so fortunate to have two of my very own. I highly recommend it. And I'm pretty positive my mom got it from Amazon.

Now I have to go buy the Savannah one....

  • I wanted to buy a couple of copies each for gifts. I found August Magic on Amazon. Could only find expensive used copies of Heart of Savannah. I've contacted Windigo Harbor Media, the publisher, a couple of times to see if the still have copies for sale with no reply. While you can get an order form from their website I'm not sure it is an active site since there is no response. I don't want to send a check unless I know someone will receive it and send the merchandise.

  • I got ziggee thru brat and he came with august magic, i let my nephew borrow it. I didn't know about the other one, now I will check it out see if my library still has one.

  • Very sweet book - not a literary miracle, but such a sweet story. The way the Basenji speaks to his owner, though, is very like the way my guys let me know what they need without words. I really think Basenjis are incredibly expressive - not such a stretch to imagine them actually communicating in English, if only through our minds.

  • I read August Magic and was crying on page 2. But it is a great story. Anyone with a basenji (or any dog) will love it. You can also buy the cutest basenji plush toy from the website. Great gift. http://www.basenjimagic.com/plush.htm

@agilebasenji: well, i could certainly see basenjis making an allience with dragons. But I always think of them as the velociraptors from Jurassic Park (very clever and always checking the electic fence!) That's funny, because sometimes when I see our female doing something "sly" or naught or smart, I will say "clever girl" like the big game hunter guy from Jurassic Park. I think there is something raptor like (at least Jurassic Park raptor) in them too!

It was just the initial greeting that was off right? Dogs do forget certain cues sometimes…she obviously remembered you...but it might have freaked her out if you crawled up to her kennel, particularly if that wasn't something that you normally do. Imagine this...if my husband was gone for a long time, and he didn't tell me he was going to come home while I was sleeping, and creep up to the bed...it wouldn't matter how nicely he was talking to me, I would be SCARED by his unusual behavior, and his unexpected arrival. Next time you arrive home, try just walking in like you normally do and say Hi Sheba (and puppy) like you normally do, and I bet she will be overjoyed. We have to remember that dog brains work differently than ours in a lot of ways. If we try to think of them just like people, we usually end up getting our feelings hurt :) Hey, and thanks for serving our country! Stay safe!

We have a few of the "usual" words – esp. "cookie" -- but what really gets both B's going -- or should I say coming running from even a different room -- is if they hear Gypsy's jaw snap, as in "she just got food, what's in it for us". Amazing the distance from which they can hear Gypsy get a bite of anything. LOL

Those magic elves must have transported Bruiser up the stairs and into my bedroom. I got back from the gym and I heard his collar up there. He had gotten into everything. I hate magic elves!
