    It depends on the alleles of the dog. The litter that I co-bred and have been posting puppy pictures of the parents are KkYy and KkYY. If you do the two punnet square way instead of the 16 punnet square way you would get.

    At the K locus

    ….......K........k
    K........KK.......Kk
    k........Kk.......kk

    At the A locus

    .............Y.............y
    Y..........YY...........Yy
    Y..........YY...........Yy

    So we get

    from K locus we got:
    KK - 1
    Kk (we get this twice) - 2
    kk - 3

    from A locus we got:
    YY (we get this twice) - a
    Yy (we get this twice) - b

    1 + a = 1a (KK YY)
    1 + b = 1b (KK Yy)
    2 + a = 2a (Kk YY)
    2 + b = 2b (Kk Yy)
    3 + a = 3a (kk YY)
    3 + b = 3b (kk Yy)

    hmmm. I guess i dont really get this part. How do you do a 16 punnet square? Maybe that will be easier for me. (maybe not lol)

    ill try to examine them some more and see if i cant get it down.

    What is KkYy? is this a Black basenji with a tri gene? and KkYY. is this a red Basenji with a black gene?

    these are, ironically, the only two that i didnt understand what they would be as dogs.

    Well since she is red she is definately kk and has at least one Y. There is about a 50% chance that she is a tri carrier. So she is either kkYy or kkYY

    This resulted in 3 black and whites and 1 red and white. Statistically bred a tri factored red she should produce 50% reds and 50% blacks. Her first litter was sired by a tri factored red and she had 2 reds and 3 blacks.

    ok awesome! I did it right! That is what I was thinking. but i wasnt sure which one. so in theory, i wouldnt know unless i bred her then…with a tri factored male...because breeding to a tri wouldnt prove anything...would it?

    Breeding to a tri would give better odds of producing tris if she is tri factored, 50% reds, 50% tris. A tri factored red would only give 25% chance of tris

    oh. for some reason I thought …hmm that makes alot more sense. lol ya idk why but i thought if you bred to a tri it would only mean that the tri is the one giving the genes, not the tri factored so i thought you wouldnt be able to tell. but you putting it like that makes alot more sense :) I understand now thank you

    Ya know, reading coat color genetics has always made me happy my first breed is Rottweilers.:)

    Yeah you told me about that before and I'm clueless, but I'll try it if I need to, lol. could be the noise of occasional thump, could be they can hear it even tho we can't. My chow would be drooling buckets before we got a mile away. I just had to keep towels down and take off and bag along the trip. But I took her for a 7 hr trip to atlanta and she threw up and threw up, then stopped. Never threw up again. :( on your back. I had been getting radiofrequency ablations in the US, and they really helped. But doctors here will only do them once or twice. I have had at least 6 on one side, 3 on the other. :( But it's miraculous pain relief when it is done right. Maybe your dog acupuncturists knows of a human one they'd recommend?

    I haven't studied coat colour inheritance in dogs, but from what I know of it in horses, you can tell quite a lot by looking at sire and dam and grandparents. Sometimes you can rule certain colours in or out, and determine probabilities of the colours you will get in a mating. Someone who knows more about dog colour genetics will be of more help. If an animal is homozygous for a trait, or heterozygous can sometimes be determined by knowing the colour of the parents…..

    Thank you so much for the encouraging words. We have been running him with our other dogs in our yard, we have about half acre or so, and he is fast..He loves it, just don't think he is used to out heat yet, it is already about 85+ degrees and very humid…I think he looks good, he is definitely babychunky, not fat, but what I envision a puppy looking like before he grows into his own body. We will keep up with what we have done so far and see what he turns out like...can't be bad, just beautiful.. Basenjimamma

    Puppies usually "blow" their baby coat after teething and the color fo the coat will change at time…. So yes their coats to change, but not a lot... just like some pedigrees have black masking aroung the face (muzzle and eyes) that will fade with age. Also on Basenjis, the white never changes size... so a big white spot will be much smaller when full grown. Looking at the picture of your Kona, I would say that the white between his eyes was almost the entire area between the eyes when born

    I'm glad to hear the spinal tap went so easily. What a brave little girl Keba is. When I first saw she was getting a spinal tap, I thought oh–that sounds painful. I hope things start improving for her.
