Belly Rash

Member Introductions
  • And I would suggest a yeast infection… on top of the other suggestion

  • Digital, the brindlewonderkid (13 yrs), has a rash on his belly/groin area. It comes and it goes. Neosporin sort of helped. The regular vet tried steroids (not too helpful) the holistic vet "gave" us an ointment called Tritop. That helps, but it still comes back.

  • @tanza:

That would be my guess as well.

  • Thanks for all your thoughts. We are going to vet again this next wee. I will ask about the tyroid panel. It's just very frustrating and expensive.

  • Both Iams and Euk have corn, many Basenjis have corn/wheat/grain allergies (as do many other breeds of dogs)… one of mine has high corn allergies
You might want to try switching to a grain free food... corn in the diet along with things like beet pulp add no value.

  • Anyone ever use EVO grain free dog food?

  • I have used it in rotation, it is a very good food. There are many, many good grain free foods out there.

  • Thank you everyone!

  • Let us know if that helps if you change food.. remember however you are looking at very least a month or two before you might see a difference

  • I hope it does, we started the switch this morning. Boy, does he love eating now. Starting him off slow of course.

Good for him… hope that it helps

I'm giving mine the EVO canned duck.

i've been feeding it for years - my veterans are doing great on it.

  • Just for the record, Eukanuba Naturally Wild does not have any corn. And Eukanuba Lamb and Rice doesn't either.

  • Have you ever heard of oxigen therapy? It is now widely used in human Dermatology Clinics in the USA and for horses to cats and dogs. From rashes, mange, cuts, ANYTHING! The healing process is accelerated with oxygen. The product is Vetericyn and even though it comes in human form, I have a friend who uses the animal product on himself and the skin lesions from sun exposure have shrunk. There is a website:vetericyn.com and an answer all questions. I have used it on my dog's eye and it cleared up very fast. I intend to keep it on hand and will use it on my next knife cut in the kitchen!!!! I think you will be pleased. My Buddy suddenly came up with a rash on his inner flanks and just in front of his penis. Not due to anything I could think of, not food, not fleas, not grass…..????? Just two treatments and he is not licking or scratching anymore! (it is not cheap, but since you've already been to the Dr's., what do you have to loose, it is just O2 treatment and it works.... see website...)

Here are the ingred for Euk Lamb and Rice, note corn meal (to me same as corn) and Dried Beet Pulp.

Lamb, Brewers Rice, Corn Meal, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Fish Meal (Source of Fish Oil), Chicken Meal, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Chicken Fat (Preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Dried Egg Product, Dried Beet Pulp

And here is ingred for Naturally wild, second ingred is corn, for the venison and 14% at that (again note the Beet Pulp)

Venison(>14%), corn(>14%), sorghum, chicken meal, rice(>10%), barley, animal fat, poultry meal, dried beet pulp,

Salmon(>14%), rice(>14%), chicken meal, corn, sorghum, barley(>10%), poultry meal, dried whole egg, corn oil, dried beet pulp, chicken digest, animal fat

Turkey(>14%), rice(>14%), chicken meal, corn, sorghum, barley(>10%), dried whole egg, animal fat, poultry meal, dried beet pulp, chicken digest,

  • I guess I'm confused, because when I look at the bag (I have the Venison sitting here next to me), corn is nowhere on the list of ingredients. It says: Venison, Potato, Brew Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Brewer's Rice, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Chicken Meal, Fish Meal, Chicken Fat, Dried Beet Pulp, Potassium Chloride, Chicken Flavor, Brewer's Dried Yeast, Fish Oil, Salt, Vitamins, and a bunch of minerals…
If it's in there, aren't they required to list it on the ingredients?

Well, isn't that interesting, for some reason I was on the UK site.. and there is corn in that one, on the US side there is not, but there still is beet pulp which IMO, is just junk fillers, no value

Venison, Potato, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Brewers Rice, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Chicken Meal, Fish Meal, Dried Egg Product, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Dried Beet Pulp

Same with the Salmon, and the Turkey… however please note the "Sorghum" in all the products, that has a simular look to corn... and I would wonder about the value it would add to any food

  • Rikell,
Since we've treated our yard and surroundings with organics and herbicide free methods, we hardly ever see rashes and the like. Our dogs eat a raw diet and we treat our yard with nematodes and fertilize organically. Oh, we we clean our floors with natural products like vinegar. Plus, we use the Jean Dodd's vaccination protocol and don't do the spot on flea treatment….ever. Good luck.

  • Haley also has had a recurring belly rash…VERY red and itchy. She is a Fanconi dog and is on Dr. Gonto's protocol. At first I thought it was an allergic reaction to the antibiotics she was on for recurring bladder infections related to the Fanconi, but she's been off the antibiotics for a while and still has the recurring rash. I've been systematically removing and then replacing the pills in the protocol and, so far, I think the allergic reaction is due to something in the Centrum vitamin that is taken once a week. Rikell, I'm just wondering if your dog is on a daily vitamin of any kind......or if his food has a vitamin in it that could be causing an allergic reaction? Sure hope you get this figured out.....it's SO not fun!

@Motala - That is good that you talked to Jan and glad to hear that she had not been spayed. I still think that your Vet and you should connect with Dr. Gonto about your girl's blood work and blood gas results and if he has any thoughts about it.

@basenjilovers - She is very cute, please make sure that DNA testing was done for Fanconi and PRA. And if not or you are not sure, you can get the test kits at www.ofa.org. You do the test as it is a cheek swab.
