Hi all. Me and my fiance have a 6 month old male basenji, named Boss. He has all of his shots, is neutered, and has been vaccinated for rabies. We got boss from a breeder when he was 7 weeks old. We did not get any official papers (She had some hand-written information regarding his shots and such), but she assured us that Boss's parents have given 12 litters and all were Fanconi free.

We love Boss, but with our approaching wedding, we are afraid Boss may be too big of a commitment for a newly wed couple. Being a puppy - or a Basenji in general, as I have read - it is a pretty risky thing for Boss to be left home alone out of his crate, and it is unfair for him to be crated for 8 hours a day.

Boss has gone through PetSmart's beginning level puppy training. He doesn't always listen, but he does know the meaning of basic commands like leave it, drop it, and come. Boss loves to play, pretty much all day long. Unfortunately he hasn't quite learned that people don't enjoy play biting. He doesn't ever bite out of anger, but when he's riled up he might jump for your hands.

We are looking for either a previous basenji owner, or someone who very well understands the commitment level basenji's require. Preferably Boss's future owner would be someone who will not work 8 hour days, or at least has someone at home to let Boss out.

I'll post some pictures of Boss. He's a cute one :)

Edit: I couldn't get the images to show, so here's the links to them.

    Thanks,

  • He wasn't too big of a commitment just four months ago when you were just living together, what's so different now that you will wear rings? You'll still be the same people with the same friends and the same family. Please, I'm really not trying to attack you personally, but please explain to me what exactly has changed?

And please contact BRAT to rehome your boy. They will evaluate him and find him an appropriate forever family.

  • We don't live together. Currently she works part time, and I go to school. Right now, usually one of us is able to be around with the dog. Once we get married she will be working full time, and I will be working whenever I'm not at school.

Could you send me a link or something on how to contact or find more information on BRAT? I just get this feeling that googling BRAT might not find what I want :P

  • There are many members of BRAT on this forum. Ms. Sharron Hurlbut is a very outspoken member of the Forums and of BRAT. She will be able to point you in the right direction.

  • so sad for your baby. We have two wonderful "family members". we could never give them up. they are our children and our family. We got them both through brat. if you google "basenji rescue and transport" you will find it. it is very easy. good luck to your sweet little one. there is a special place for him.

  • Here's the link to the main website:

  • If keeping him company is a worry then that should not be a problem. Someone doesn't need to be with him all the time. I work full time and Buddy stays alone from 6:15am to 4pm 5 days a week. He gets 30 minute walk in the am and 1 hour at late afternoon. I had 3 Basenjis before him that stayed alone all day too no problem. You can make it work.

  • Yeah, the only problem is that he can't be home alone if he is out of the crate. As much as we try to dog-proof our rooms, he always seems to find a book/trash/important document to play with. It just seems mean to me to lock him in his crate for 8 hours.

Thanks for the links, though. I will look into BRAT.

Can you baby gate him into the kitchen or any other area? Keep the doors closed to the rooms. Put all trash, books and other items out of reach.

  • We certainly have tried. He's dang smart. The majority of the tables in both the kitchen and her bedroom are low enough the he can get stuff from on top of them. I suppose we could completely remove everything from a room, but that's sort of impractical. I would go crazy moving 25 picture frames in and out of the kitchen everyday!

We do have a dog room that we occasionally let him run around in, but the door was poorly-constructed and he can push it open to get into the rest of the house. Short of buying him a house of his own, I just can't find any place to keep him.

I just looked into BRAT. I'll talk with my fiance tomorrow about getting all the information we need for the form. Do you know if they will deny our application if we don't have breeder information? All our breeder gave us was a handwritten paper with shots info and birth date info. No phone number, if I remember correctly.

  • My understanding is BRAT will not turn a dog away simply because you do not have this information. Just give as much as you have. It's all you can do. I believe the best thing, since the puppy you so wanted no longer fits into your lifestyle, is to surrender him to BRAT and let him find a home with people who will love him for who he is. He is still young enough to learn to trust a new family and love them.

That dog room sounds good. Can't you fix the door so he can't push it open? Does it need a new door handle? A door is easy to fix. You could put a radio in there with him to keep him company with it on a radio talk station on AM( just not Rush Limbaugh):D
Sounds like you have your mind made up to give him up.

  • If you are truly committed to him, then why not just buy an ex-pen or baby gate to restrict his access to the door in the dog room?

Dogs and puppies are hardwork and if you have decided that you are just not up to that committment then it is best to rehome him now while he is still young and desirable. If you are truly interested in keeping him there are many people on these forums who work and successfully own basenjis. If you are going to place him please contact BRAT. They carefully screen their adopters and if at some point in the future he needs to be rehomed again then they will be there for him for life.

  • Just to reiterate what lvoss said, if you want suggestions on how to keep him in your family, we can help you with that. Lots of dogs stay in their crates while their owners work, and then enjoy a busy life with them when they are home.

If you have decided that you just think he would truly be better off somewhere else, then BRAT can help you with that.

In my opinion, you don't need to give up your dog because you both work full time…but if either one of you doesn't want to cope with having a dog, then rehoming is the best option.

  • BRAT will not turn any dog away for lack of breeder info. We are more concerned with what his temperment is. Here is a link to rehome your B. We will not pay for him though. If you are interested in finding a home, and the breeder will not take him back, then please consider surrendering him to BRAT. we do our best to find the best home for every B.

  • Hi.

I am in Chicago, on the south side, and have family in West Suburbs, so if you need help basenji-proofing a room, I am willing to come out.
Have you contacted the breeder? Most breeders have a clause in the contract that you have to bring the dog back to them if you cannot keep him.
    Who was your breeder?

I don't think in reading his post that this was a breeder that used contracts since they did not get any registration information. And the parents were not health tested.

I think that BRAT is the best choice for this baby

  • You are right Pat. I didn't read carefully.

I didn't make any commentary before about the breeder, but I am of the same implied opinion as you, Ms. Pat. Twelve letters from the same parents???

@yahtzee92 Just make sure you see Mom with the pups if at all possible and you definitely see the health certificates of both parents. OFA website is public domain - anyone can research on it. Tanza is right. Any puppy farmer can pay the BCOA and get listed. It doesn't mean there is any BCOA recommendation or guarantee.

Hi rachel, I am looking to find a home for my basenji. Her name is Noel and she is 3 years old. She is a very good girl, lots of energy and very sweet. She knows basic commands. She just needs more time than I can give her. My recently had to take on my 6 month old granddaughter so Noel ends up spending tons of time in her crate. If you are interested you can contact me at my e-mail address jwlznewview@hotmail.com. I live in springfield IL.

Folks, This thread has been closed, pending review and moderation. Please respect our forum community rules and guidelines. If you feel that you need stop posting for a while because of a conflict with other members, please step back and email us directly before posting publicly about the issue. Best way to to handle arguments on the public forum is to just let go and move on. http://www.basenjiforums.com/showthread.php?t=374 COURTESY AND RESPECT The purpose of this board is to provide a place for Basenji owners to make connections, exchange information and assist and encourage one another. It is above all a friendly environment for online discussion. Don't be rude to others, or make an argument personal If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all Know the difference between a difference of opinion and a personal attack Don't try to "win" an argument by repeating yourself over and over Don't tell others what to post Don't bash other members Keep it clean, don't use profanity Why can't I tell this user what an idiot he/she is; every single thing he/she posts is just so wrong? If you can't find a respectful way to express your difference of opinion, then you're better off saying nothing at all. Don't talk down to other posters, lecture them or be rude and dismissive. Disagreement is fine, but attacking another poster personally will get you in trouble and result in a ban from the forum. But he started the fight by attacking me! Can't I defend myself? This is a forum for the discussion of Basenjis, not a dueling society. If you feel attacked, please report it to the admin and then ignore the poster, respond to another thread. Remember, however much you were provoked, if you attack a poster personally then you are just as guilty of breaking the rules. Why can't I tell a poster that he's breaking the rules? This board has a moderator. Telling other people what to do is rude, derails the conversation even further and often ignites flame wars. Please just report the user to the admin and move on.

Are they DNA tested for Fanconi? Or the parents?
