I've tried bait and no bait in the ring. I think bait works better for Logan, but not for me. He likes it and responds to it well, but as a new handler it's a pain in the butt. I know what I'm expected to do. Doing it once in the ring is hard. I get caught up in the minute and then forget what I'm supposed to do the next. I once stacked Logan backwards on the table. D'oh! Logan is SUPER food driven and he knows if I have cookies in my pocket. That's all he'll pay attention to. Jumping on the handler is frowned upon. Yes, I know training and time will cure it. Not there yet. Too many hobbies. Showing, breeding, MGBs, stereos, astronomy, motorcycles, family, friends, travel, house, etc. I need more time.

@Roux I have to live with the dogs 24/7. The judge sees them for maybe 3 minutes. My preference tops his/hers !

@cashh - Just curious, did you have your dog excused? Typically it is because of being lame in the ring or not letting the judge to exam the dog?

@eeeefarm said in Complete newbie to showing: ... I had a husky/shepherd crossbred that was the same way. Put a muddy dog in the barn at night, open the door to a perfectly clean one in the morning! What the...? Did they wipe themselves with a horse? :face_with_tears_of_joy:

I'm looking to a future Scott, with all you newer Basenji breeders now, when there are many more dogs and owners in Scotland - after all the Scottish numbers have certainly improved. The distances you all have to travel to shows are horrendous in my opinion. At present there are too many clubs for the numbers of Basenjis being shown - it's exceedingly difficult to get good Committee members as I well know! Each club has come to a point at sometime when there is/was a real shortage of people willing to serve on committees. The NBS worse than all as it has twice almost closed for want of a secretary - Connie and I decided to propose Les and now the club has gone from strength to strength.
