OFA Certificates

  • Can someone please tell me do ALL Basenjis that are Fanconi tested get a certificate from OFA through the post?

The reason I ask is that last year I tested my 4 Bs, 2 early in the year and 2 later on. I have 2 Clear, 1 Carrier and 1 AFS. I have received certificates through the post for the clears and the carrier but not the AFS. I have emailed the OFA on numerous occasions. The first time I got sent a duplicate cert for one of my clear dogs, the 2nd time they emailed me through the results again, the 3rd time they asked for my postal address - that was in October!

I know the results as I have the emails etc but I would like to have a copy of the certificate so that I can show people who ask for it.

Hope all this makes sense BTW!!!

  • Affecteds do not get a certificate because they are not assigned an OFA number.

  • Thanks for that. I just wish someone at OFA had told me that last summer to save me wasting my time asking!!

  • May be stuipd question but why do they not issue a cert for all dog's that have been tested?

  • OFA does not issue OFA numbers to dogs who have abnormal/affected results. Since no OFA number is issued there is no certificate.

another stupid question maybe, but if a dog is abnormal, if you retest them can it come back different?

  • That depends on the test and the reason for the abnormal reading. Dogs that are rated Borderline Dysplastic are advised to test again at least 12 months later. Thyroid results can change especially T4 which can be effected by estrus, stress, and illness. Fanconi results are not going to change unless there was an error in the lab when reporting the results.

I wasn't happy with my Ind result from two clear parents because I told them before I sent the swab back that I wasn't happy with it and would have liked another swab. It was tested anyway and I almost expected a wrong result. It wasn't necessarily an error at the lab but human error before they ever received it (on my part) I think they should have sent another swab, I would have been happy to pay for it. I was told if I wanted a repeat test I would have to start from scratch and pay all over again.

$15 http://www.offa.org/dnaappbw.pdf I think it may just be that I spend an inordinate amount of time on the OFA site.

Thanks, Both come from one very good breeder in Holland, his whole kennel is tested clear. We're going to test our Brindle one for hd and some more health tests (Buana is already tested before) and we will discuss it woth our vet. He is very interested in Basenji's and knows a lot about Fanconi.

How long the results take to post on OFA for the Fanconi marker test is a bit variable. I would say that for most people it posts somewhere between 2-4 weeks after the email notification is recieved. They are also posted in batches so watch for other postings with the same Test Result Date as yours. If the batch posts and yours isn't there, then email OFA and let them know. If you submit your CERF paperwork, the CERF results will automatically link to the OFA site. CERF sends an update to OFA about twice a month so again it is about 2-4 weeks for it to show up on the OFA site once the dog has an OFA page.
