Happy New Year

  • Happy New Year to all my friends on the forum.
Have to admit to not realy being a fan of New Year, somehow it makes me sad instead of happy :(
Still our Pup is due on the 2nd, so here's hoping everything goes well :D:D

  • Happy New Year Shelley!

Do you have anything planned for tonight?

I think this year will be the first year i havent gone out, it will be weird. I have a show tomorrow (first one with my puglets!!) so i have an early start which is the excuse i have used for not going out, but to be honest, im in a real depressive mood and am choosing to sit home alone with the dogs, with a bottle of wine, and mourn 2009 rather than go out and celebrate 2010. It has been a bloody awful year for me, will be glad to see the end of it lol.

Fingers crossed for the new arrival!

  • Happy new year to you to Shelley:D We have been invited round to one of the neighbours as they are having a party so will give us a chance to get to know them a bit more.

@ Jess, I hope you have a better 2010 as it really was a rotten one for you in more ways than one. Good luck for the show tomorrow:D

  • Jess, i'm sorry you're feeling so bad, i'm not surprised with the horrible things which have happened. Trouble with new year is that people can feel obligated to be happy and feel guilty when you're not. That's certainly the case with me. I watched Grumpy old new year last night and it made me feel better ;)
Jenny like you we are staying local, we are just going across the road to my brother and sister in law. I have bought scratch cards for us to do after midnight (you never know)
Tomorrow we are going on a New Years day walk

  • Thanks Jenny and Shelley, it cant get much worse in 2010!

Sounds like you guys have a nice night planned!

  • Happy new year everyone!

We will also stay home, cause Lycia is very afraid of all the fire work.. We'll just watch a movie and keep her safe with us on the couch ;) :)

  • Happy New Year to all of you on the other side of the ocean and this side as well…may it bring happiness, health and wealth....
I agree seeing a year go is depressing, but seeing a new year arrive is also a happy time..my kids are growing way to fast, I am aging way to fast and time is never enough..this will be a better year.

Good luck on your pup, Shelley, so exciting..Otis' birthday is coming up on the 5th...

Maya, this will be a better year..when things don't go right...go left..my new motto for the year. Good luck on the puglets showing..let us know how it goes.

Jenny, I hope you have a good time with your new neighbors..sounds like fun.

Janneke, We are staying in too, mainly because we don't want to be on the road with all the novice drinkers..and drivers..and because I think if not all, two or three of our dogs are afraid of the rockets..
Sounds like you might have a new little girl pup soon too? hint hint? :D

  • Petra, Otis will be one year old wont he on the 5th?
I know what you mean about things going too fast. Last night whilst watching Grumpy new year someone said that when you are young New Year comes once a year but when you're older it's once every three months :D I know just what they meant :D

  • Shelley,

Yes he will be a whole year old. Such a big boy…..

  • Loops, double post, sorry

  • @Basenjimamma:

@Kipawa: Sounds like you will be really busy later this summer/fall. I have seen pictures of the boats that people live on in the Netherlands - it looks like quite an interesting lifestyle. I assume your basenjis are fine with it. Good luck in finding your special cat. :) There are two types of living on a boat :) People that live on a boat that can't sail anymore. (they put it in a harbor and live there) We live on a ship (we can't call it a boat  ) that sails every day. We load our ship with material (like corn or coils of steel) and sail untill we are at the place to unload. We load the same weight that 40/45 trucks can load ;) It's a weird lifestyle, every night we walk the doggies on a different spot and every day they meet new dogs and people.. And we are always at home with them.. that's a great thing!

Happy Hanukkah to you all also. (it's after sundown so I'm safe posting -{trying to be funny}). Glad to see there are other's who are owned by a Basenji (or two, or more) that have a Jewish flavor in their life.

Happy Thanksgiving! I am grateful for many things, including our two wonderful basenjis, and this forum. We would never have made it through the process of adopting our two rescues in just over a year without the support of Sharron Hurlbut (sp?) and other experienced folks on this board. Today, Fiji and Bongo are happy, well adjusted dogs and they add to our lives tremendously. Thanks to all of you for your unending support of the breed and one another. Hope you've all had a wonderful day.

@dmcarty: OK this is where lots of people will get realy realy mad at me but I'm going to say it anyway. While I appreciate desire and any rescue or raid the puppy mill groups desire to save some animals in deplorable conditions - I keep coming back to the phrase, "unintended consequences". Because dogs were purchased at auction or out of a pet store or some place in deplorable conditions - you have increased the 'market' for that breed of dog. They (PM's) don't care about your kind heart, have little guilt about the conditions they were in - they know the dog was sold. Several years ago many in basenji rescue and BCOA were involved in a horrid situation in Kansas City. Placing a huge number of dogs - now many breeders have not bred in some time because there is no "market' for puppies from reputable breeders - some because they gave up homes that were on their lists to these rescues - some because they've taken in some of these dogs themselves and can't have any more dogs in their house. While it pains me to say this because I do have a heart - I think there is a point where because of our collective 'heart' we are making the problem worse. If there was not a 'market' for these animals - we would not have puppy mills. BTW - the only way you can even think about this is if you don't have your fur-baby on your lap. But do think about it a bit. I understand your stance on the puppy mill but these puppies were actually from the McMinn County Animal Shelter in Athens, TN. The deplorable conditions I described occurred at the shelter and while on transport with the shelter's volunteer to a rescue group. Even though this is a shelter run by a humane society the conditions there we overcrowded, dirty, and no better then a puppy mill. With that said, the volunteers who work there do the best they can with few resources and little or no knowledge about veterinary medicine. They do provide a service when in the month of June over 400 stray and surrendered pets were admitted to the shelter. If you've ever been to a country that lacks a system to deal with stray animals then the importance of such a system is apparent, regardless of the conditions found at the shelter. Who know's where the parents came from but in the south (as in much of the country) we have a large problem with the lack of spay and neutering. I actually paid $0 from the shelter to obtain the pups. Since they were headed for euthanasia the volunteers and animal control officer released them to me so I could provide them with medical care. More than likely these pups were from someones' dogs out in the country who weren't spayed or neutered and probably was allowed to run free. Who knows maybe the parents were from a backyard breeder or puppy mill but I would never advocate for people to pay a large sum of money for a purebred dog instead of a good ol mutt from the pound just because somewhere along the way a relative of that pound puppy might have been from someplace I don't support. Everybody has to make their own decision but I have trouble faulting the shelter and its volunteer workers when its the city, county, and federal government and its representatives who should do a better job providing the funding necessary to train competent workers and provide adequate housing conditions. In a rural county such as McMinn in Tennessee these resources are just not available.
