Nutro and itching

    I fed Nutro Natural Choice for years with excellent results then the company started to have recalls. I switched to a different brand for a long time and recently decided to give it another try. I switched back to Nutro a few weeks ago. Three of my dogs have been itchy and scratching bald spots in their coats. I coudn't figure out the reason until I discovered today that Nutro Natural Choice now has soybean oil in it. Soy is a known allergen and I suspect it is the cause of my itchy dogs.

    Does anyone else here feed Nutro and if so, are your dogs itchy?

    Yes, I went from Innova to Natural Choice…itchy...going back to Innova now....

    Mine have been on Nutro for years, usually not a problem. I do have the heat on now though (brrr) and they are itching, I think, because they like to stand on top of the heaters and dry out their skin! No reaction from the food though, I don't think.

    I took down my 55 gallon aquarium a few months ago and since then it has been really dry in the house. I thought at first that may be the reason for the itching but I am leaning towards the food now. I'll try changing brands to something without soybean oil in it and if their itching stops, I will know it's the food. If the itching continues then it may very well be the dry air in the house.

    Robyn, our house is super dry too…but the itching started towards the end of summer, when it wouldn't have been so dry....

    Update: As soon as I switched the dogs to a different brand the itching stopped and the hair has started to grow back. I think it is safe to say they were allergic to something in the food. I was also feeding the puppies Nutro Natural Choice puppy food and although they had gorgeous coats they just weren't doing very well on it. I will never use nor recommend this brand of food again.

    @lustopher No ! they will gum them if they can't chew and it all helps with teething.

    Not sure how Xylitol is being marketed. It is an alcohol found in a lot of plants, including birch wood, which is the source of Xylitol used in medicines. And it is toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. Most of the time you find it in sugarless gum and candy.     Thank you everybody so much! I appreciate all the info. I had some vanilla Breyer's all natural and gave my guy a taste of that... boy does he seem to think that's a great treat! Obviously, though I don't want that to be the only thing I do. I'm going to follow up with our vet on getting a draw for the full thyroid panel at hemopet once next pay check comes through. You were right he was only checked for T4. Thank again basenji forums! I was looking back at pics from when he was younger and weighed more. I think he's always been a bit taller than standard and had a little barrel chest. Used to call him a basenji bouncer at the dog park. He was all about playing with the labs, pits and other big dogs - probably because he knew he could outrun them if they ever got too rough. He's much more about slow walks with me and lap snuggles these days ❤

    I would find out what he scared of or what he dislikes about the car. Is it the car itself, the sensation of being closed in, the movement when the car is being driven? Then work on whatever the problem is, with food. As for food, I use raw duck and vegetables. And I hand-feed all meals, so I never have a problem with not eating/partially eating. I would also recommend hand-feeding for anyone who does have a dog with food issues. Shredded chicken is good (as long as he doesn't have any reactions). But that and some kibble isn't a balanced meal. You may wish to look into a vitamin supplement, specifically something that has a focus on omega 3 (since chicken is high in omega 6), Vitamin C & the B vitamins (because if all he's eating is chicken and kibble, where is his source of vitamin C and the B vitamins?), zinc & copper (same reasons).     Hello, thebartsch! Welcome. I was told that itching that starts from the tail/back and moves forward is usually flea bites. But if the itching stopped with a change of food, that's great too.
