    When I first adopted Beta as a rescue, she would walk or pace and poop becuase she was scared of the area around her because it was unfamiliar.

    Since Max often had loose stools due to inflammatory bowel disease, I would take paper plates in a plastic bag on our walks. When he would start the basenji spin, I would reach down with a plate. I got pretty darned good at catching everything :) Of course, sometimes the neighbors would look at me funny. But that was easier than trying to get it up off the ground if it wasn't firm. One time, a young boy was with his dad who was doing some construction on a house by me, and he had his dad's megaphone he was playing with. He started giving a blow by blow description over the megaphone of me following behind Max trying to catch his poop. Now that was a little much :eek:

    I am sitting here laughing out loud with tears running down my face!! The visual of you keeping a paper plate in position….

    Oh my, I needed that laugh. I have no clue what Beeji would do if I tried that. I had a friend who had a Samoyed and when she went, my friend would place a sheet of newsprint under her. Upon finish, roll the print and bag it.

    This morning we went on a nice long walk and Beeji found a new place to poo! It is even farther away, but then it was my fault for walking so far (he says)

    At least I'm getting exercise! I should take some before pics of me now and then this time next year. After a year of daily long walks, I should notice something!!!

    hmm I was having a hard time getting Bindi to poop in the back yard, she was doing fine for the first week, she kind of went in the same places for the most part, she changed them every now and then, but now I can't get her to poop out there

    she's not really leash trained yet and often is too distracted by traffic to do her thing in the front yard :/ maybe she feels the back is her play spot? yet she poops right next to the toys in the living room sometimes sigh

    I hope she poops outside soon, she's been holding it for most of the day :/

    Stop with the free feeding... this is a dog that needs to be on a schedule. And a cup and a half might be too much for a 20lb dog. Try reducing it to a cup. I have also found that feeding 2x's a dog is better than once a day. I have never let my dogs free feed. Once he is on a schedule you can mostly determine when he should have to go... and then you take him out and stay out till he goes. A trick you can use (many don't like this but I will put it out there) is what people that show use. Insert a match in his bum half way.... This will stimulate him to go, when he does praise/treat him. And until he gets the idea, you will need to keep him crated or on leash. You can search the forum for other conversations about using a match to stimulate. Search for match trick

    Be careful on over using treats... mix it up with joyous praise and a rub under the chin and pat the back. If you do treats only they can think if they stop getting treats they might think it's bad behavior and change the potty behavior, but by mixing it up they still get the praise and reward with a good job, also always use their name with praise, and never with discipline. I'm reading this book about raising and training basenji's and it's also what my folks said they did that worked with their basenji

    Try feeding her bran cereal (with NO artificial sweeteners listed in the ingredients!) softened in plenty of water an hour B4 a walk. This has helped me correct crate/indoor pooping issues with several puppy mill fosters by increasing the urge to eliminate; They poop outdoors, giving me a behaviour to reinforce. She might be a shy pooper, too–if you can, find her a screen of tall grass or brush for privacy, don't interupt her with praise or be loud offering it, and never yell or strike her for pooping indoors...many dogs won't potty within sight of their owners for fear of being reprimanded.

    @dmcarty: When mine are babies I do paper train them within the kitchen - then gradually reduce the amount of paper until just one section remaining. Then comes the interesting part - when they head for that paper - I know they need to go out. I also have a 'paper' by the door we use to go out to the dog yard - so head for paper - go outside - pretty quickly don't need paper at all as they go to the door. With adult dogs who know the 'door' I find that the puppies just follow and the previous generation teaches the new generation. (guess they only need me to bring the food) and they don't tear the paper? Geez, mine LOVE LOVE LOVE to shred paper. No paper on the floor is safe. I am amazed that yours leave it alone and actually use it properly!

    my mom and dad were alwasy taking in strays - dogs cats whatever. One cat they had was quite feral and my mom had feather dusters in several places. When the cat would pounce on one of the dogs or the other cat - she got a face full of feather duster. It was interesting to see and labor intensive - but it did work to break up fights without yelling. Sort of a redirection of thought.
