Keeping warm

Basenji Talk

  • When Maya is cold and the radiators are on she gets onto the cats hammock (that attaches to the radiator), she loves it. I have a heated massage bed for my pug that Maya also likes but i would not leave her unsupervised with it incase she chewed through the wires.

I would recommend a microwavable heatpad. We have one that we bought to take to the winter shows to keep her warm in her crate. You stick it in the microwave for about 6 minutes and it stays nice and warm for 10 hours. Just stick it under the bedding and it heats really nicely. Its designed for litters i think, but Maya loves it. It is made of very tough plastic so shouldnt cause too much trouble if chewed, but i wouldnt leave them unattended with it for too long.

What about a bed that keeps and radiates the heat the dog supplies? Or use his regular dogbed and buy one of those, make any dog bed warm thingys http://www.petstreetmall.com/Deluxe-Pet-Bed-Warmer/531/695/, it would still have wires, but if he doesn't ruin his old bed, maybe he will leave the cord alone as well.
Although, I have to admit, what Maya has sounds like a brilliant idea.

  • Melody, my gramma's B, grows a thick winter coat each winter. She was raised in Michigan and lives in Oregon now.

AJ, however, does not. He's in the truck, which is temperature controlled 24 hrs a day. If I'm parked somewhere, the generator takes over and keeps the temp at a set level.

Yep, that's the snuggle safe. Wonderful thing. I have 3. I figured they'd be great for home but especially for dogshows in cold weather. I put them in the crates. Diggie won't have anything to do with it. I think it's the hard. He seems to pick soft and cold over hard and warm. I put it under the blanket. He tends to shuffle it around so it's away from him. Even when he's cold. Yes, he is spoiled. Yes I do cater to him.

I just didn't know about using this unsupervised. I really don't want to burn the house down. He doesn't chew up things, so that's not a problem. Those are great prices!

  • Houston

I understand, burnt down house is not good..

  • @wizard:

Nobarkus, you don't turn the dryer on do you: "I put some towels that Buddy lays on in the dryer" :D.

No, no I don't put the dryer on then leave. I put the towels in there for 3 minutes to warm them up then put them in his dog house which is in the garage before I leave. He stays out during the day. I would never leave the house with the dryer on.

  • I have a bed that uses gel packs that you can either freeze for the summer or microwave in the winter. As long as your dogs aren't chewers you may be able to use something like that. Here is a link to their website.

Thanks for the link. That looks like a great thing to have around in the winter.

  • Houston

    You're welcome.
There is a different brand as well… Simple Solutions Self Warming Thermal Dog Cushion. Seems to be the same type but different style. I am getting some of these no worries about chewing, Moses, the podengo wonder, still chews alot..

  • I like Petra's idea of the thermal bed. I would not use an electric blanket when not home. Basenjis can radiate a lot of heat. I think I'll get one for Buddy. Buddy likes to dig and pull at the blanket before he lays down and might break through to the wiring.

The only way I would want a fire in my home, is if it would be located in my kitchen…so I could get a new one;););)..but I don't want my dogs or kids involved in that...;)

Ohhh, I really like that! Boyz might have to have that for xmas. Looks very portable for the dogshows too.

  • Here you go.

  • I put a favorite nesting blanket on the sofa and another hanging on the back just above. Tyler taught himself (and Kate) to just nest, then reach up and pull the 2nd blanket down on top of themselves. Works out nicely when they're self sufficient.

They are so smart…after this whole thread, I have totally made the dogs crates up, soft and cozy, with extra blankets...we are so spoiling them aren't we..

I just bought Buddy his own queen size bed with large comforters. OK, I didn't but he get's half mine. :D

  • You-all are funny. :D

As does Kananga. In the morning he stretches out on his back (while hitting me in the face with his paws, more than once  ).

He knows what he's doing. :D

While I applaud you for wanting to rescue this little Basenji, they are not doghouse kind of dogs. They want to be with their human pack as much as possible, and keep in mind that just because they are an African breed, this little girl may have been out of Africa's climate for many generations and may not fare well in intense heat. My black and white girl does not do well in our FLorida heat for example. She prefers the air-conditioned sun she lies in inside the house. Basenjis are escape artists as well, and she may be able to get out of your yard. If you cannot keep this self-cleaning, low shedding dog in the house with you and you cannot locate the owner, Then Basenji Rescue and Transport is a good place to turn to find to find this little girl a loving home with Basenji saavy fosters and adopters. Best of luck to both of you.
  • She is so bored. How do you keep them entertained?

My 7 month B is kinda the same way. Especially strong hunting instinct and bored easily. I’ve found a laser pointer does wonders for the hunting and boredom! Even the next morning he goes into his play room and spend several minutes trying to find the red dot. I’ve also found his favorite toy is always ones other dogs/humans have so I lock his toys inside his crate with him out of it. Then I also play with them myself. Only after a few days does he get one of the toys. He then ends up hiding it so I can’t lock it up.

I'm not sure why your pictures are not showing up. I'm going to experiment. [image: 1467823614030-bathtimex.jpg] O.K. that seems to work. I dragged and dropped it and I see it. Now to check whether others can also see it! This is a picture of my two girls, taken a long time ago......probably in the '80s. I am wondering if the picture you are trying to upload is too big. Trying that now. I am not seeing the picture I just uploaded, so that may be the problem. ![0_1467823932526_Bathtime.jpg](Uploading 100%) Yes, I think that is the key. Downsize your picture and I bet it will work properly. As you see, I get the same uploading message that you did, but no picture, when I try to upload a large file.

Frozen food is very good. I usually give my dogs raw bones/marrow bones and meat with bones that I find cheap. Turkey necks are also very good for keeping them pups busy for a while. I'm kinda scared to give my dogs toys alone, especially in a crate where they can easily get very bored. Chew and eat a rubber toy, isn't good for a dog stomach. You can get the same problem with bones too, but they are probably easier to digest, than rubber/plastic. And remember, always feed RAW bones, never cooked! Cooked bones splinter easily, and can tear up a stomach … good to remember. :)

@sharronhurlbut: Fran, use baby wipes on his feet. I use it on my b's. Sharron - glad to see your reference to baby wipes - I have often wondered if I could use them on my girls when they get their feet and legs nasty at the park - I thought if I could get most of the mess off them it would be easier for them to keep themselves sparkly white - but - then I thought maybe it would be bad for them to lick whatever baby wipes leave on - what do you think?
