Wanted: Red/White Basenji within ~300 miles of Minnesota

  • Wanted: Red/White Basenji under 3yrs old within ~600 miles (10hrs) of Minnesota

My girlfriend and I have researched the Basenji breed and feel it would be a perfect addition to our home. We are looking for a young Basenji, preferably housebroken, and must not be a mixed bread as we have allergies in our home.

Please help us find our new companion to love. :)

    Thank you!

    -Curt and Corinne

  • Have you checked out BRAT or BCOSW? And not always possible to define the distance when you are considering a pup or adult… you need to look at what is the best fit for your family and lifestyle.

..thought I'd mention that even though basenjis have gotten known to be a hypo allergenic dog breed, that might not be true, some allergic people still have problems with them..Best thing would be to see if you may actually meet some basenjis and see how it goes..not one but several visits might be necessary for you to know for sure..
Good luck in your search..I would recommend BRAT and also of course the site Tanza mentioned so you can find responsible breeders in your area..

  • Thank you so much for your advice. We just e-mailed a member of the bcosw. :)

basenjimamma, Thank you for that :) We had thought of that, as we have researched quite a bit, and are going to definitely make sure that no one is allergic before we take one home.

I would look at the BCOA site for reputable breeders in your area, but don't be quick to rule out others. A lot of good breeders have all their puppies spoken for by now, so that will make your search much harder. But keep looking and don't be afraid to contact folks from all over. The most important thing is to find a good breeder that you can work with personally, and one who does significant health testing, including the new DNA marker for fanconi. A happy healthy puppy and supportive relationship with a breeder are priceless! I do know some folks will ship, but the best thing to do is go out and get the dog. You will probably want to meet the breeder and litter, and they will want to meet you. That way you can get a better feel for each other and both still have an "out" if things don't seem right. For about the same price as shipping a dog, you can get a plane ticket yourself to get them. It usually only costs about $50 or so to add the dog in cabin on your return trip. And then you are in complete control the whole time of what is happening to your puppy. Also sometimes breeders that live outside your area still have ways to make transportation arrangements. You can always check. They know other breeders that live between you two and can meet up with them at shows or events to get the puppy closer to it's new home, or within a reasonable driving distance of you. My first dog came from Georgia, but I only had to go to KY to get him. :)

I think they're trying to look legit! Knowing that most "ethical" breeders ask a good amount for our dogs (course mind you we have a lot of money stuck into our dogs prior to the "sale" price). And the fact that we're not into dogs to make money.

@culturalenigma: Hi all…sorry it's taken so long. I did not end up getting a Basenji - though I really really still want one. I did get a Jack Russell. As I said before, my mother breeds them and like any good breeder, when the people who bought her found out they were pregnant, they no longer wanted the puppy. So she was in need of a home and we were looking for a dog. Anyway, anyone know how a Basenji might get a long with a Jack? I know people with Jack's and Basenjis.. do just find.. but lots of energy there between the two….
