Basenjis win hands down

Basenji Talk

  • My son moved home 2 days ago and brought his dog Lizzy with him she is a border collie/lab mix. Not that she isnt a sweet dog but having her around makes me appreciate Zoey even more. She is such a needy dog always at my feet and slobbering all over me and looking up at me with these please pay attention to me brown eyes. Now every times I pet zoe it seems she is wet (yuck) from Lizzy slobber lol. Oh yes when I pet zoe its like she is allowing me that privelege, but when I pet liz she keeps trying to get closer and just seems to need it sooo much I feel bad for her.
My quiet house is not so quiet now. Liz isnt a horrible barker but just having a dog in the house that barks sets my nerves on end. As she moves through the house she has this floppy gate that makes her seem so clumsy. She is the jester to Zoeys queenly attidude. Oh and the smell, she is getting a bath my next day off.
We havent had any real fights yet thank goodness. I never considered Zoey to be a Alpha but she is letting Lizzy know that its the position she plans to hold in our house. She is always growling at Lizzy when ever she thinks Lizzy is getting out of line. Luckily Liz is so layed back she just tries to play until Zoey is over her little snits because she is at least 3 times zoes size. But even the 9 lb cat can boss liz around. Hopefully we keep a somewhat peaceful household.
The upside? I have been yearning for a second B so this will either cure me or give me a small taste of what it will be like with 2 dogs in the house. Walks are an adventure though not horrible, well ok not too horrible.
Its only been 2 days but it will take some time for me to adjust myself. All in all though I only have one problem with Liz I dont know how to deal with. Submissive peeing.
Do I sound horrible? I just know at this point I cant see myself owning anything but a Basenji.

    That's why I've had 4 of the critters over 34 years. I ain't chang'n I tell ya!

  • You're a convert. That's not horrible. Being around other dogs does make you appreciate your Basenji.

I can't help with the sub-peeing. She needs more confidence, but I've never dealt with that before. I don't know how to build a dog's confidence.

    Good luck with it. :)

  • Honestly, for me, walking 2 basenjis at the same time is a cinch. I put both leads in the same hand and they go forward as a team. Granted I don't make them heel, but they are not terrible pullers (unless a deer runs across the road, but even then I can get them back under control fairly easily).

Walking 3 basenjis at the same time isn't quite as easy and is a work in progress.

  • One of the reasons I got Basenjis instead of other dogs is just that "needy, begging" thing that drives me crazy in other dogs. I've always preferred cats because I like an animal that demands some respect. When I found the Basenji, I found a very catlike dog who wants a say in what is going on around her, and has a very strong feeling of self-worth. A basenji loves you on its own terms, and I find that perfect for my household.

@weedtrek Possibly Basenji mix, nose looks a bit wider and the eyes are less oval. Could well be a Basenji mix though.

I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
