Basenji Intellegence

Basenji Training
  • I have had several basenjis who were thoughtful and very bright, and some who, while not dumb, don't seem to have that reasoning ability that others have had. Like us humans I guess. Our first basenji, Pete, clearly was a thinker. You could watch his eyes start to twinkle as he hatched a plan to 'la-de-da' through the house and zip up behind you for a nip of flank, then run off grinning.
I do love a companion who challenges me…and boy have I had a bunch of them over the years.

Scoops, I love the description of your Basenji fetching the bed for your Dobe. They are not only smart, but are feeling, sensitive thinking beings. If they had opposable thumbs, we would all be in trouble.

  • I love the fact when Kananga is running around my home, I try to challenge him by blocking every available path, and he will ALWAYS find an alternative route either the first or second try. It usually involves a 3ft+ jump, but it amazes me how quickly they can make decisions at high speeds last minute.

He always has a big grin on his face when he gets past me and is ready for another challenge. :D

  • @Benkura:

This is a great thread. I'm currently doing a home study dog course and for the last unit I have to do a 'special study'. As usual I've left it to the last minute and haven't actually done any study. (Got to be in by this Friday!!) :o
What I had thought I would write about (needs to be approx 1500 words) was 'Why are some dogs labelled as more 'intelligent' than others?'

This was quite some time ago…how did the assignment go?

  • Thanks MacPack

It is interesting watching the two breeds interact, it keeps me entertained. Who needs the T.V. when I've got the Baz-Manns lol !!!!!!

  • I've got a "thinker too. If Abbey can't get what she wants right away or just take it by brute force she'll study the situation, formulate a plan, wait a suitable amount of time till she thinks I'm not looking, and then she'll carry out her plan. That requires some smarts.

  • My basenji has me wonderfully trained, I come when he calls (trouble or to go outside), he keeps me off the phone, he steals my chair, he communicates with me telepathically. Has a nack of finding & destroying only the most dear items.

What other breed of dog uses mind control to control their humans?

The other day we were coming back for a walk, The dog stopped and looked up at me like he was trying to tell me something, my wife asks me "what did he say"? -without realizing what she said.

These dogs are too smart for their humans own good. They pretend like they are not listening or do not understand, but I have seen plenty to suggest otherwise.

    I'm fully trained!

  • They do have us trained. :D

i walk the lab and isis at the same time one on hand and one on the other, the lab seem to have a major drive to sniff out anything and track blindly and of course isis will be doing the same, the b is easier to control cause she lighter but the m1 tank of the lab well.. we've came across little furry friends on our nitely walks i need to stay very focus on my surroundings, one thing the b does if theres someone walking behind us doesnt matter how far , she walk ahead stop and turn to look back, she'll keep doing this repeatedly like she warning me these something there,im sure its instinct on her end to,of course i confirm whats shes doing but yeah those b's dont miss a trick

I have had that same situation with Ayo,only with him it's usually with large dogs. we only have one area at the park here, all together, small dogs and big dogs. When he goes in he always chooses one big dog , runs up to him and starts growling. Sometimes he stops very quickly, or the other dog growls back and it stops or it escalates , usually because the other dogs owner freaks out. He is fine around small dogs. And I am pretty sure that he is fine with most dogs, that if I leave them they will work it out, but I'm afraid to let it play out because bigger dogs can really hurt him, and also because usually the other owner freaks and intervenes making everything worse. Sooo, Ayo has started to get a bit of a rep.. The basenji rep!! I usually wait till only small dogs are in…

@agilebasenji: Could you put her in a pen behind the counter? Or section off an area for her. That way she could be with you, socialize, be the store mascot but not be out in the store where she could slip out the door. i dont think that hub will want to change the disposition of things…she'd just learn how to jump over the counter as soon as she figures it out!!!:D

Love it. I had seen the golden video a couple years ago and though. well of course a golden would be willing to learn that. Amazing that a Basenji actually decided it was worth while to learn that :)

I would LOVE to involve my B with Lure Coursing. She is a mix, so she could only run in practices, but that's fine with me. I just know she would love it… and I would appreciate her getting the exercise. Unfortunately the closest group that participates in lure coursing is approximately 2 hours away from me. If anyone knows of a group that participates in lure coursing in the knoxville, tn area, please post or send me a private message. THANKS!
