Alternative to the E-Collar

  • Thought I'd make this it's own thread too

Here is a great option to do instead of the e-collar

This is my foster after his neuter, he was CRAZY and go go go, so we always getting a cone in the back of the legs and it was rather uncomfortable all the time. Also since he sleeps in the bed, a cone is not comfortable under the covers either.

All you have to do is take a large hand towel, fold it in thirds long ways and then wrap snugly around their neck. Don't worry, you really can't wrap it tight enough to choke them. It should go from the base of skull to shoulders. I use wide collars on my critters so I just used that to secure the towel, just loosened it then made it click snugly again. Like I said it is not going to restrict their breathing and they can still move around, but can't lick the wound if you have wrapped it correctly.

Sorry some are a little blurry, like I said he didn't sit still. I know he doesn't look very happy but I did catch him at a "towel change" moment. They can use the same towel for about 3 days before they would need a new one just from wear

Please note that this doesn't work for things like head or front limbs that the dog could scratch or lick at as it doesn't protect for that.

  • Great idea, looks much more comfy than the plastic collars

  • I have made my own too, can be found on the thread about Kristii and her surgery, also I think there is a picture on Robyn's thread on her Baron….

  • Nice idea! The vet gave Jibini a cone collar when he got neutered- it was too big for him but the next size smaller was too small. It was disorienting for him & dragged the ground when he lowered his head- he couldn't even drink or eat with it on. So I just took it off him & supervised him….swabbed a little Bitter Apple on either side of the site. It worked, but I drove myself bonkers following him around for a few days! I wish I would have thought of something so brilliant!

Awesome collar BTW- where did you find it?

  • The engines of our injunity!!! Your brillant….myB girl acutally chewed out of her's to I put an old t shirt over her, worked like a charm...no pic's sorry.

I read up on it, and it does sound very strong and unpleasant-tasting. I talked to our holistic vet yesterday, and the consensus was to start with caps diluted with olive oil and ginger. Ava also has allergies, so this might help with that as well. Then we can eliminate the Benadryl. She's already on a probiotic, so the vet feels a conservative dosage shouldn't have any ill effect. I'll watch her very closely to make sure.

Looked at pictures of both, and the Bite Not Collar just looks better because they have 360 vision, you seem to be able to adjust the width with more accuracy as well. The Kong collar looked as though a paw could get through the neck and make the scenario more traumatic! In a pinch I borrowed a neighbor's 'cone of shame…' and Uzie just froze in place, when he did move he bumped into everything. I kept it on him for maybe 1/2 hour while the benedrly took effect and he slept for few hours. He got a canine tooth puncture and he kept scratching it thus preventing a heal. So it was not sutures as you have to think about, but the next morning he did have total closure-the thick folds of skin of a basenji. Ps: there was not any swelling and he is doing 100%! The blue you see is Nolvasan Antiseptic cream-works great! PSS: agree with eeeeeeeeeeeeeeefarm! [image: attachment_p_160720_0_the-cone-001a.jpg]

@Ann: Hi. She was on Deramaxx. We haven't tried a pain med like Tramadol yet. She gets a daily dose of hypoallergenic Joint Max with glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM. I'll have to check into HA and Ester C. I'll also check into Metacam. Thanks. Hello Ann, I have tried various medications for one of my older dogs. I can tell you hands down that Tramadol works. My vet was trying very hard to get a solution for my dogs pain, so we kept trialing different things. I did research on Tramadol before I opted for it (http://www.anydogrescue.org/tramadol-for-dogs/ is a good place for research). So, I went to the Vet, she agreed we should give it a try… and it works! As you and I both know, every dog is different...but it worked for mine, so give it a try.

@cahootz I have made my own in the past.... there used to be pictured on the old Forum, I can't find them now. I got a stair tread (hard rubber) and cut it to fit from just behind the ears to the point of the chest. Wrapped it in a towel, duck tape it all up. Wrap around the neck and secure with Vet Wrap. Worked great, also I would put Tea Tree Oil around the stitches (not on).....

It really is a large loss. In loving our breed I find it pinnacle that we embrace it in all of its' natural color variations. Ivoss - thank you for the link, I went ahead and read all the letters and found it to be informative. I'll def. keep abreast. It's very exciting to think that with an open studbook to 50 or so new imports we could finally see some recurrence of the colors which have been so hastily discarded.
