    Isn't it amazing how our pets know when we're not feeling well? It took everything I had yesterday to get online to see what everyone was up to, then back to the bunk and flat on my back with the flu again.
    AJ was great…didn't complain about not getting out as much as usual and even acted like he felt sorry for me (licking my hand, laying next to me with his head on my leg...) He went to lay down on his bed at the foot of mine and would come "check" on me once in a while. He never does this when I'm feeling healthy.
    Love my dog! What a great guy.

    I have found this to be true of dogs in general. Something about their social nature and their 'people reading skills' lend them to be nursemaids. Some dogs are better about it than others. I can remember growing up, we had a Scottish Terrier that became a complete 'velcro dog' if anyone was sick. He would stick to them like glue, until they felt better.

    You just can't get a better companion than a good dog.

    Sorry to here your sick I just put this on another area about flu, colds put vicks on bottom of your feet put on some heavy socks and crawl back into bed. Put lots of vicks on them old German way only place my children ever had vicks. I hope your better. Your guy is special his way of taking care of you after your feeling better better give him something extra special. Take care.

    Dogs are the best companions, through sickness and health..I firmly believe that.

    When I was pregnant with my daughter (9 yrs ago), my dog, Lou, acted really weird around me one day, he wouldn't leave my sight and would almost hoover around me…..23 hours later my daughter was born..I really feel as if he could sense my labor coming on, before I even did..

    on a different note, my mother can smell certain sicknesses as well, like strep throat, we only went to the doc to get perscription when we were little she had already diagnosed it..kind of spooky.

    My first basenji Pumpkin was a fantastic little furry heating pad better than the plug in kind. Somehow she just knew when I needed her!

    :D Have to say that my beloved Benji was one of lifes takers and yes he would cuddle up to me if i was ill, especialy if i had a high temp this was because he loved the heat :D

    I've been using my grandmother's old cold and flu recipe: Half a lemon, three tablespoons of honey and a large mug of piping hot water, mix and enjoy…carefully. Add to this good old fashioned "Jewish Pennicillin" AKA hot chicken soup with lots of fat floating on it. I have never heard of the Vick's on the feet trick and will give it a shot soon as I can find some Vick's. It's not so readily available in truck stops. Thanks for the tip! :)

    I've been a bit under the weather as well lately. Normally Kananga has some distance when he sleeps next to my pillow, but the past 2 nights he's been literally inches from my face. Rather comical when he snores.

    wow! nic memories! Here on my city my sister cant belive that people even stop theirs cars to ask "what breed is your dog"? some people get pictures with the cellphone or with their tablets so a walk with my girls on the downtown is a secure chit chat with the people. A remember 3 ladies, they were so amazing! Maca dont put so much atention on people specially girls, but those ladies was talking to Maca saying she was sooo pretty sooo sweet sooo everything and Maca start to bend those ears and make noises they were more happy and carry on and Maca more and more sweet Whilw They was saying Maca was soo sweet and bla bla and i was thinking.. ha! she is a little naughty and sometimes so dominant.. but that day Maca plays her role to perfection. She deserves a Oscar.. Other day she was confused with a male chihuahua, a lady ask if we can breed our dogs, i said, well is a SHE and is not a chihuahua, the woman start to apologize i dont care well.. i dont like Maca be confused with a male dog, but was funny at the end. But on general people use to think they are like foxies or pitbull or little deer. I said to some kids that i was ironing the tale all days to get curled. They believe it and i was worried they try to iron his own dog, so i said that noooo! that was natural and ironing a dogs tale is a ugly idea. Oh one day i lef Maca with the policeman at the bakerys door ( he was at my sight anyway) and when i was out i found the man with several people asking him if was a police dog or some kind of new police dog because looks so nice and so naughty hahha The poor man have no words and just was smiling while the people was taking picture of him and the dog. lol So the last time that i walked with my sister she was wow! i cant believe it.. the people stoped to ask what breed is.. Yes, my girls are used to some fame.. and i like they socialize with the kids.. not so much with the grown people and with so many thief getting his eyes on pure breed doggies not so nice but well… i said the are naughty some times.

    So, I've talked with Oakleys breeders and met for play date with some of their pups…things went really well, Oakley took really well to the other pups with me around, so much so I really didnt exist. One pup just clicked and fit perfectly, she would be the perfect temperament and disposition to compliment Oakley and our life...so I'm really glad I got to see what works and what doesn't...one female pup and him just couldn't click the whole time, tensions and such...the dog I originally fell for is a retired female and we tried that as well, didn't go as well- I think Oakley is too abrasive for older females to tolerate...he's a big puppy and acts like it. That cemented for me that a pup really has the best chance of working out. I learned a lot about basenji interaction and behavior, possible issues to be aware of and really just more about Oakley.. It was a very insightful visit and I feel more confident that Oakley will accept the right dog into our home, the decision is really up to me now to see if I can part with Oakley and I being two peas in a pod....still a little worried about having two and not yet having gone through the "having children" phase...the thought of eventually being pregnant with two seems more daunting than one...perhaps some insight into that would be helpful!

    I would go and see the vet asap. And if you wash him I would first try pure water, no shampoo. If he has a contact allergic reaction, you need to get off whatever it is off his body. This would be done by clear water….. Vomit yellow liquid with little foam seems to be "empty stomach" to me. Sh*** like this always happens on a weekend! Fingers are crossed!

    I only have one boy of unknown parentage as he is an adoption but my guess is that they probably do "know" family by scent if not sight. Their differing reactions to "family" probably relates back to the "pack" mentality. A female may have two daughters that she treats completely differently due to her perception of their ability to challenge her as "alpha" female in the future. I would guess it is similar for males. Time together as a "family", as with humans, is probably also a factor. Just my thoughts.

    See that is what I am dying to hear. we just got home and he made a really worried sound when we got out in the backyard. Come to find out Luna, our Schnorkie and Otis had been "playing" with one of our younger chicks that keeps flying out of the run…needless to say he was bothered by the fact that A) the chicken was traumatized and B) I was mad...Thankfully the chick is not hurt severly and will be Ok with some loving inside for a few days.

    I don't think I could have watched it. I was crushed as it was. I enjoy the animals around our yard and if I could catch the loose cat I would remove it. As much as I realize it is their instict, I still would freak out My wife had the same reaction and was really upset by it, she even resented the dog. We tried to catch them but you know you just can't catch a basenji, yet alone one after a bunch of rabbits. As much as I dislike rabbit & other vermin in my yard, I don't want to kill them personally or by our dogs. If a owl comes by during the night thats OK, it's natures way. You can't yell or be mad at a dog doing what it was intended to (my wife). People love to humanize their pets, but really they are animals and preditors. He was old tired and slow but chasing the bunny invigorated him - I swear he smiled for a week. Our dog is a timmid scaredy Basenji and she was he same way after that. I did wonders for her ego, she was so proud. I was happy for her.
