1st Show for Jaycee

  • We were going to try to stay in kind of area. St.Louis, Des Moines, Joplin, Springfield, few in Arkansas might go as far as Little Rock since that is were my mother-in-law lives. Tulsa not bad if on a Saturday I have family in Okla. I wish Texas and Ala was not so far we have family in both those states.

  • Hey Rita Jean…go check out the Onofrio site, the results are up. :)

An interesting tidbit that I saw from that show - the Welsh Springer that went Group Four in the Sporting Breeds is co-owned by country singers Vince Gill & Amy Grant.

  • I was on there and looked at results but I did not see the owner of Welsh Springer. I sure did not hear any music just joking. I am sure they more than likely did not even show the dog themselves. Thank you for telling me that would have been nice to hear some music I would have loved that.

  • That was a nice entry of Basenjis… I see that Linda Ehlers was there (kennel name Jerlin) and she has been in the breed for years and years and has some really, really nice Basenjis and she is very nice too!... And it was a big entry, since there were major points....

  • I think I will see a few of those people in Springfield this weekend (it's a 4 point major!). I've never tried the amateur-owner handler class before, they don't seem to offer it everywhere. But, I guess it's probably a good one to get yourself in the winners ring because not many other people are probably using.

  • The AKC lady told us was a good thing that we had entered Jaycee in amateur beacuse she was in season Eli could not have showed her as a junior handler. Since Eli and Jaycee had 1/2 hour of class to learn how to show and act and so on amateur he and Jaycee were. Comming into season could not have been timed any worse. The AKC lady told us she would have Eli stay in amateur for now.

This is the first year that it is offered, it replaced on of the other classes that used to be offered. But it is no mandatory to be offered. I think it is a great class for owner handled dogs to use

  • It was really good for Eli since he really was amateur. I do not think he was treated any different then the rest I just think it helped if he really would have messed up. Like when he and Jaycee were going around in ring she stopped to pee and Eli saying come on we have to go.

One of the lady's there told us a story few weeks ago her dog took a poop in the house and she said he knew better so he got into trouble for it. Next week they went to dog show and the dog in front of them stopped in ring took a poop. She said her dog looked at that like o no not that again I did not do it she had to pull him around it to get him to going.

  • Most important thing is that you get them to "potty" before the ring time… sometimes they can fool you, but especially with a bitch in season around all those males, they will pee more and have the need to pee more....

  • Thank you Pat we had walked her many times but it must not have been enough at least it was not poop thank goodness. I have never been around a breed of dogs that most if not all females of that breed were in season at same time.

Yes, makes it quite an "impossible" situation… especially for the males...

@evillemon said in How to start showing: @debradownsouth Yes we figured we will wait until he is at least two before we make any decisions on neutering him. I can understand why you might want to neuter a female but a male? Agree you need to wait. Most of the reasons advanced to neuter come from groups with an agenda but without solid science. Generally speaking the health risks of neutering outweigh any benefits and there is no effect on behavior. In my experience, having an intact male Basenji never presented any issues at all. Unless you just let your dog roam free I can't think of a single good reason to do it.

I have experimented with several different types. My favourite by far is a lambs leather half choke all in one. I feel I have enough control and they can't easily escape from them either!

@lvoss: If you can find a copy, I would recommend trying to get a hold of a copy of the Basenji Stacked and Moving by Robert Cole. They are no longer in print and can get quite expensive but every so often you can luck upon a copy that is reasonably priced. Here is an online copy: http://www.basenjiclubofcanada.com/BCOC-BobCole.html

Ok on the 18th is Myrans debute puppy class in a KC show everything has gone so far by the plan he´s very good when I stack him can stand still for ages.Gaiting is well ok as long as I don´t run too fast yes folks I run hurts but hey i´m stubborn. But is it because he´s still young (8 months)that he starts plowing when I go too fast and when I slow down the trot looks good according to onlookers??
