Interceptor vs Heartgard Plus

    Anyone know the difference between Interceptor vs Heartgard Plus? Last vet prescribed Interceptor. New vet sold me Heartgard Plus. My basenji will eat neither until I crush and hide in food. She's a 23 pound, 9-year old, spayed female. Lives indoors, plays outdoors. We walk dog trails and go the beach, where other dogs go. Victoria's allergy-prone and has vascullitis, a blood vessel disease. I want her protected from various worms, etc., but don't want to cause other health problems in the process.     Interceptor was developed as an alternative to Heartgaurd for breeds like Collies and Shelties where Heartgaurd crosses the blood/brain barrier and causes neurologic problems.

    Really glad to know this! My B mix has collie in her, and was on Heartguard when I adopted her. When I took her to my vet, he put her on Interceptor like my full B, and I'm glad now we made that change! :)

    Is that penetration of the blood/brain barrier a problem for Basenjis taking Heartgaurd?

    It is only in collies and shelties that I know of. My boy would get a very upset stomach on Heartguard so we switched to Interceptor which seems to agree with him better.

    We have used Interceptor since we got Jaycee in March done very well.

    Re: arthritis I've been giving dogs gluco/condrot for years. Started with the lab 12 years ago. She was 6 when I started and was dysplastic (unknown to us at the time) and I did notice an improvement in her movement and jumping. When the boyz got to be around 7, I started them on it as a preventative and both had careers in agility and coursing. Digital the brindlewonderkid is going to be 13 the end of the year and has just recently retired from agility (maybe). At some point I switched to KNOX nutrajoint with glu/con. And when we got the new malinois, I put her on it b/c I thought she looked weak in her pasterns. I think it or the exercise has helped that; she is about 2.5 years. I notice when I don't get my dose; don't notice when I do.

    I recently went to a lecture on Lyme disease…freaked me out...and after that I was at my vet and asked about putting Ruby and Brando on Frontline. My vet told me to not bother with it. I live in an area with a lot of ticks but she said that because Frontline isn't completely effective and because she knows of some dogs that got Lyme using Frontline, I'd do just as well to just check the pups over thoroughly when they come in from outside and not use Frontline. She wasn't against Frontline, but just felt that with Ruby & Brando's short coats, a visual check would be the most effective method of dealing with ticks. Maybe once a week I do find a tick on Brando...haven't found one on Ruby yet, but I'm vigilant and know that I've found it within an hour or two of one climbing on him. With one exception they have only been dog ticks, luckily...one was definitely a deer tick though. But even with a deer tick you usually have 24 hours before you need to worry. Nina, the really small ones may be deer ticks (that's what the small ones are here)...those are the ones you need to worry about.
