Question regarding stomach issues

  • Houston

Ok, so I just got home from my PE job and he has gotten really sick, but I can not figure out if he threw up or diarrhea or both..It was several, like 6 areas, smallish/medium in size, some were liquid with chunks of food still in it, others were more mucus in fashion..
In the past he has had dirarrhea with undigested food in it, so I don't automatically think it is vomit. He wanted to go out, so I let him out and he is currently chasing squirrels..lol.
As far as water consumption..he hasn't had any water to drink, he very rarely does, since he is on the raw diet..water is in several locations throughout our home, so he might have had some when I wasn't around, I just haven't seen him drink.
As far as feminine products, he must have had some ingested, I did see some in his poop yesterday..so it has passed..I hope all of did. God forbid he has something stuck, I know that will be a very expensive surgery monetary wise and wellbeing wise as well…

I will keep y'all updated as things progress..thanks for all your input and thoughts..

  • @nobarkus:

I found this info on how to get your dog to throw up. Anybody ever try this?

    http://www.ehow.com/how_2143177_up-after-swallowing-foreign-object.html

Only problem is if you are not at home to have the items needed.

No, I only use hydrogen peroxide works fine and it is cheap…

by the way... it should be used within 1/2 to 1 hour of ingestion... after that, best to visit the Vet....

Honestly… I am not sure that I would take that chance... if you saw it in his poop, then there is a very good chance he still have some in his gut... if it were me, I would not take a chance...

  • I know you said he was in the trash but just question could he be upset because of the new dog?

Tanza, do you mean I should take him to the vet or make him thow up?
RitaJean, I don't think thats what it is, they are much better together now..at times.

  • At this point, it is too late for inducing vomiting to help. He has already probably emptied his stomach with the previous vomiting. It is time to take him into the vet and have him examined. With that much vomiting and/or diarreah, dehydration becomes a real concern as well as there being a high risk of blockage from consuming something he shouldn't.

  • If it were me, I would take him to the vet - today. Especially as you've seen it in his poop and he isn't holding food down.

  • Very sorry to hear Otis isn't well and also Kananga. Arfaid i dont have any suggestions but hope the're both feeling much better soon.

  • Pat, can i ask about Hydrogen Peroxide, i thought this was a type of bleach for your hair. Are we talking about the same thing i have never heard of it being used to induce vomiting

  • Different feminine products can cause different reactions. Tampons with strings when ingested; strings can become entangled and cause an obstruction just by the size of the created mass. Slightly used products of the same nature can singularly absorb upper and lower GI fluids and expand in such proportions to create a blockage.

Some pads may have "additives" that combat odor or increase absorbability; these may cause a irritable tummy or in some cases severe upper/lower GI reaction.

My vet never heard of a toxic reaction to these products, but she never the less, doesn't discount it when it comes to dogs with allergic reactions from an "unknown substance" (Some owners are less forth coming with the true info when asked "what did your dog eat recently" question. Feminine products, condoms, crotches from underwear, sex toys, stimulant products, etc…aren't documented much because the owner is not forth coming with the vital info.)

That said...syrup of ipecac should be a home owner staple. Peroxide is another. Not to disrespect anyone who has posted before me, but educate yourselves as to when, and when not to induce vomiting. Inducing vomiting in some instances, can sometimes cause more damage, and perhaps be fatal.

Following a copy and paste from a vet….....

It is possible to induce vomiting using hydrogen peroxide given in small amounts until the dog vomits or by using syrup of ipecac (it takes about 1 teaspoon of ipecac syrup per 10 lbs. of body weigh to induce vomiting, on the average so it can be hard to give enough of this --- and overdosage can cause heart problems so it does have to be measured). Apomorphine is a good choice for inducing vomiting, too -- but usually only available through your vet and it is pretty expensive.

  • I am not Pat but in past I have used Hydrogen Peroxide to make my dog vomit. It is the one you use to clean cuts usually in brown bottle in band-aid section.

    OK all.

After being on here an hour or so ago, he wanted to go out again and I followed him, wanting to see what was coming out. No much as in quantity, but blood red..needless to say I rushed to the vet, about 2 miles from here and they did numerous tests, fecal float of course, (isn't that one of the staple vet procedures?), as well as a test for bacteria and a Giardia test..no worms or the like, no Giardia either but he did have a severe bacterial infection (?), they called "Hemorrhagic Enteritis-Bacterial" , so he was given Flagyl -antibiotic, Amforol-anti diarrheal and a Cerenia injection-for nausea.
I did explain the trash digging and all, but he (the vet) seemed confident that he has a bacterial einfection..I will try to give him his meds for two days, but if I don't see an improvement, we will go back..
I have yet to be able to give him his meds as he refuses to swallow them and food is the least from his mind..what do I do know?
I have boiled him some rice and such but he won't touch it, he even turn his face away from it.

  • You can try baby food. Something like sweet potato and chicken. You may have to pill him if he will not take it willingly .

  • Houston

Sweet potato baby food, I happen to have that in my pantry,. yeah I will try that..what about pedialyte (sp?) I don't have any, but my vet said taht would be Ok to give him, I was thinking of making my own..just to get some fluid and calories in him..

Thanks Ivoss..I am desperate..it is so hard to watch him just lay there clearly miserable..

  • If you saw waste from the trash in his poop (even a little) it was not just "trash digging"… it was trash eating... Did you make it clear that he ate what was in the trash because you saw some in his poop?

Sorry, but I disagree with your Vet... he needs to be checked for a blockage IMO... and sooner rather then later...

And don't always expect that they will "eat" a pill... especially if they are already off their food... you will have to "shove" the pill down him...

But again... I would still say that I would be more concerned about the trash he ate...and the time in between is just right for a blockage... IMO

  • my boys will eat ANYTHING off my fingers if i dip it in a smidge of peanut butter. they really really lick it off my fingers and take the pill with it. if the meds are liquid, i stir them in with peanutbutter and a little pumpkin. they will eat it up….

  • On a camping trip in 1977 my first Basenji got real bad bacterial infection from eating garbage (old food left on the ground) around the camp grounds. I had to have it stay at the vet in town for 2 days on fluids and meds. I fed it cooked ground beef and cottage cheese for about 1 week or so. But unlike Otis I did not see any items in her poop. There was blood though coming out of the anus. She was walking around really hunched backed with tail down in bad shape.

  • Yesterday, I was browsing websites looking at people's litter plans. I came across a name I recognized as being recently passed and was surprised because the dog was not even 9 years old yet. I clicked on her page and found they had lost her this spring to a blockage. I thought I would share her page in this thread.

He has been drinking, if squirted down his throat, some homemade pedialyte..and when my hubby came home from his hunt,,he jumped off the couch to go great him..a very good sign, since he hadn't even picked his head off the pillow on the couch before that..I offered him some of the rice/foods I made for him and it ate all of it, slowly but shurely..since then he has been sleeping. No vomiting and just a little diarrhea..and oh by the way, I forced the pills down his throat..I didn't expect him to take them whether he felt good or bad..that is just how he rolls..LOL
I agree with the suspicion on whether he ingested something from the trash..will gauge him very closely tomorrow, and if I don't see improvements speedy enough, I will go back for a recheck ..

If you saw it in the poop.. it is no longer a suspicion… it is a fact... My Kristii had a blockage... about 5yrs ago.. and while we never saw anything that she got into, she started with tummy upset, not eating, then vomiting.... and sure enough the ultrasound showed a blockage.... even after surgery... we never figured out what it was... but it was a blockage....

The FDA can only do what the laws allow and if the govt is controlled by lobbyist, well.... But this isn't the place for politics so I'll leave it at that. I am very sorry about your horse. :( With meat.. it's particularly red meat that research is linking to cancer... early research shows amount is a big factor (recommendations from 4 oz a day to max 18 oz a week), but who knows. Processed meat is the worse, and I saw some headline (didn't bother to read since I like my beef shortly after it stops mooing) that well done steaks more carcinogenic. For the world, reducing red meat is good for the environment and health. I was reading a study last week on red meat and joint inflammation. Studies the last 15 years actually only have general connection, but that most do is a pretty good indicator. I had a doctor tell me to stop all red meat and milk when I was a teen and experiencing joint pain. It helped, but back then, no internet and not much access to current research. Here we are 45+ years later, and still no strong proof and some show that reducing carbs with increased LEAN red meat actually decreased inflammation. However, we then get this Science Catch-up. Red Meat And Gut Inflammation: Harvard Study ... https://thehealthsciencesacademy.org/science-catch-up/science-catch-up-28/ Jan 18, 2017 - Red meat and gut inflammation: Harvard study. According this new Harvard study involving 46,500 participants, eating high amounts of red meat daily might be a risk factor for gut inflammation and the development of diverticulitis. << So no one has absolute proof, but my money is on reducing red meat is more likely to be healthier than not. I just don't rule out all meat (ie fish and fowl) as getting enough protein is pretty hard and we don't have enough hard research for ME to go vegetarian. But I'm open to it and glad you are having success.

@Patty: Personally I would take her to the vet to get her checked out for bowel or urinary infections. If she is losing sight and hearing she may be frightened. It sounds as though you need to step back a pace to calm your reactions. I can appreciate that you are getting fed up with all the work but she is an old dog. My present oldie (15) has taken to peeing (and pooing) indoors at times but I know I need to put her outside more often as she doesn't have the control she once had. She has also become blind and is certainly more aggressive with the others because of that. Any way first things first and do take her to the vet, please. Let us know how you get on. I have to agree with everything Patty wrote. Changing behavior ALWAYS needs a vet check. Increase aggresssion can be due to thyroid issues, pain, tick-born diseases, constant hunger (due to other things), etc. You didn't say in your post if you'd recently seen a vet and discussed her new issues. My oldest (16 in December) has failing kidneys (nonFanconi) and does need to pee more often. So, I put pee pads down in the house in his favorite pee spots. He's usually pretty good about that, but he does still pee in other spots if I'm not watching him carefully or if he gets a bit aggitated about the sitting arrangements. Would your pup stay in an exercise pen? That would give her a little more room than a crate.

The only sounds I can consistently coax out of Jake are the ones where he sounds possessed. Step 1: Flip him on his back Step 2: Tickle/Rub his spine area Step 3: Wait for the demons He'll make other noises when he feels like it but I haven't figured out the "triggers" yet.

Both Sugar and Dimisi are fastidious cleaners of their private parts. Every once in a while-Shadow doesn't really like cleaning himself-I put a little corn syrup(I'm talking about a dabbing of it) around his private area to facilitate himself cleaning himself.
