  • You should consult or have your vet consult with Dr Gonto about what the best course of action is. I don't think a low protein food is recommended for all Fanconi dogs. A high quality food is good for all dogs in maintaining good health.

  • well wait… i have some more research i did and it's saying to put the dog on a high qulity, low protein food!. is saying that part of the food stuff is the way to teat the syndrome.

  • i got the information on the wed site… http;//www.caninegeneticdiseases.net/fanconi/FANbasic.htm

Please read carefully, it is when the dog shows symptoms, NOT BEFORE. Just because he test Prob Affected, this is a LATE onset issue and can show up anytime between 3yrs and 12yrs.. usual being around 6 or 7.

There is NOTHING to treat before he shows symptoms

Honestly, any good quality food is good and if you are concerned about protein, go with one that is moderate

Strip test at least once a month for about 3 to 4 days in a row

  • thks tanza, i have been testing him 2x a week!, but i thiank it was high protien food!!. do you guys have any names of food that the healthy basenji's like and names??.! he? very picky!!.

  • should i do this in the mid of the month?.

  • @pedro:

should i do this in the mid of the month?.

Same time every month is a good way to remember, doesn't matter when during the month.

Again as far as food, you need to read the ingredients and then decided for yourself. There are a number of good foods…

  • Pat, she might need a bit more help than that..suggestions maybe?

  • @sharronhurlbut:

Pat, she might need a bit more help than that..suggestions maybe?

I can only answer by naming the foods that I use, I don't recommend things I don't use. The Natural Balance foods are good, Potato and Duck for example. People really need to learn to reseach themselves and feed what they are comfortable with

  • thks tanza, i'm going today to get him some moderate protien food!!. i have been testing him and sofar it hasnt changed!.

@Andrew: Worst feeling ever!!!! Lola got to half of a chocolate covered granola bar …I had heard somewhere you have a 30 minute time limit before the chocolate does damage. Just wanted to share this link showing the amounts of different types of chocolate it would take before you see a toxic reaction. http://www.vspn.org/Library/misc/VSPN_M01325.htm If it was a sugar free granola bar, and contained Xylitol, that would have been much more dangerous however. -Nicole

@k9collars: I'm not sure you'll be able to stop this problem with the harnesses. Often times, hair loss is from the hairs getting into the weave of the webbing and then it being plucked out. For that problem, you'll need a fabric against their skin that would be of a tight enough weave that the hairs can't get into the weave. Second problem is the friction. The dog is continually in motion rubbing, while the harness is stationary. Back and forth, back and forth. Nylon webbing may not be abrasive when touched, but over time it will have the effect you've noticed. Perhaps a softer lining might work (satin, polar fleece), but over a long distance, it too may have the same result. Time to reach outside the Basenji family to find rollerbladers that take their dogs with them. They must've come across this problem. Nick Lexington, KY Thats what is great about Ruff Wear they really go above and beyond to prevent the friction wear and the hair being pulled out too

I do agree with Tanza that yous hould check what is under the deck stairs that cause her booboo. My B loves to dig so I think you should check out what can hurt Lillie in case she is inclined to be a digger like my B. Hope she feels better. Give her lots of hugs and kisses.

I personally know a Basenji that died from raisin toxicity. It is definitely a real, and serious concern.
