    hi he had the ofa.org fanconi test done and it came back at rick, i talked to john at the office there and he said he has it but isn't showing any signs yet!. but my question now is why wait till the simtoms start to show why not statr the treatments before they start to show! if they have been shown to have the fanconi!!.??

    There is nothing to treat until symptoms show. The protocol helps to treat the symptoms it does not fix the problem. There is no cure for Fanconi.

    hi, i understand that it dont'cure the problem, but seen as i did the test and taked to john at the ofa office and he told me it's just a matter of time till i start to see signs of it,! wouldn't it be better to start him on some stuff now instead of waiting for signs to show>?? like a high quality -low protain diet on his food , to start now!?. but don't start any meds till the signs show so i know the amount to get him on!.

    You should consult or have your vet consult with Dr Gonto about what the best course of action is. I don't think a low protein food is recommended for all Fanconi dogs. A high quality food is good for all dogs in maintaining good health.

    Please read carefully, it is when the dog shows symptoms, NOT BEFORE. Just because he test Prob Affected, this is a LATE onset issue and can show up anytime between 3yrs and 12yrs.. usual being around 6 or 7.

    There is NOTHING to treat before he shows symptoms

    K!, but would it hurt to put him on a high qualiy low -protein diet. or show i wait till he shows berofe putting him on that kind of food!!???

    High quality proteins are easily digested and do not tax the kidneys as much as lower quality proteins.

    i feel sooo darn stupid.! i didnt read it carefully tanza!, there put on a high qualiy, low -protein dies with medication being USED TOO!!!> I FEEL SOOOO STUPID!!. SORRY TANZA I'M TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO HELP HIM BEFORE HE SHOWS SIGNS!!. I HATE THIS TO SIT AND WAIT FOR THE SIGNS TO SHOW!!. IT ERRKS ME BADLY!!.HE SURE DOES LIKE THE LOW PROTEIN FOOD!.     Ohhhhhh! I didnt know that the lady at the pet shop wanted me to try this with him and he love's it but no more till signs show!!!. Thanks ivoss!!!!!!!!!!!!!>

    Shes'trying to work with me ! Now that tells me differ because she does know about this with the food!!!!!!!!!!!!!>im just going to go up there and tell her iwant my money back!!!!. Or i'm going to sue!!. I'm not going to play games about this anylonger! It's either my money back or law suit!! !.

    holy cow i thank i just broke a record here with him!!.i is food aggressave, but today he eat some of his food!, then went to lay down but the cat likes it too, so the cat when over to eat and he come over to her and layed down by her and watched her eat a little of it WITHOUT GETTING MEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

    Pedro, your boy isn't sick YET. So, get him on the food Pat recommends and strip test his pee every few days. Do this until you see the color change. THAT is when you need to do the suppliments for him.

    Honestly, any good quality food is good and if you are concerned about protein, go with one that is moderate

    Strip test at least once a month for about 3 to 4 days in a row

    thks tanza, i have been testing him 2x a week!, but i thiank it was high protien food!!. do you guys have any names of food that the healthy basenji's like and names??.! he? very picky!!.

    Same time every month is a good way to remember, doesn't matter when during the month.

    Again as far as food, you need to read the ingredients and then decided for yourself. There are a number of good foods…

    Thanks for all the help. I got the martingale one for now. Maybe I'll get the hound collar later, but I figured I'd get the kind I already know and swear by.

    I wish. Gypsy is getting old and having more problems – sometimes loses her balance, etc. -- and in response Jazzy is getting meaner to her. When the dogs are outside, Jazzy will wait on the porch for Gypsy. When Gypsy approaches the porch to come in, Jazz will run out growling and starting biting at her face. I've been able to curb it a little by letting Gypsy in, and then shutting the door and making Jazzy wait and sit before letting her in. Little things like that... Although other times she will curl up with Gypsy and sleepthere's never any kindness shown; Jazzy bosses her around more than ever, often even chasing Gypsy off of her bed so that Jazzy can lie down on it {I always make Jazzy get back off and let Gypsy back on}, even though Jazzy has a chair and her own bed. It makes me sad. Keoki on the other hand, seems quite oblivious and treats Gypsy the same as always. While those two never snuggle up, they are play-time buddies. Gypsy livens up a good bit when Keoki invites her to play.

    @ELERICKSON40: Yes I agree. She is quite the mighty hunter and her nose is to the ground always!! Alot of times when she is digging in the couches and chairs she is trying to bury a bone. She will stuff a bone into the corner and actually take her nose and push imaginary dirt?? over the bone. It makes us laugh!! Yea, my B does the same, the first time I saw this I was so intriged, they are so smart. It is a funny thing to watch, Sahara will take a bone around the house in her mouth for the perfect place to bury it. If she can't find a place she is happy with she will prance around whinning the sadest noise like she is so sad. I actually pitch in and help her find a place, and she will most of the time agree on the place, she checks it out and then walks off. These dogs spoil you for any other breed, they are the best.

    ha ha, those are cute. if i put a basenji sculpture on the floor Caesar thinks it is alive. I wonder how he would react to something like this! Cute!!
