Bibi–The Bog Dog!

Show Off Your Dog
  • Bibi is unusual for a basenji, I think. Playing in the drainage ditch is her favorite thing to do. Her brother, Chacho, is not inclined, but Bibi loves the water!

Maybe it's because we live in Costa Rica on the Caribbean coast, and it always rains here, or maybe it's because when we first got her as a puppy her only playmate was a mix who loves water. But, whatever it is, Beeb loves to run up and down this ditch when it's half-full of water. When she's tired, she just lies down and cools off.

  • Great pics! That's a kick to see Bibi laying in the water!

  • Great pictures. You are right she is definitely different from my B, there is no way he would lay down in water, now way..maybe play if he forgot where he was..
She is a pretty tri girl

  • I never got a picture of it, but one time Bibi ran full tilt down the ditch and did one of those Basenj somersaults, landing on her back in the water. No problem. She picked herself up––mud running down her sides––shook off, and went back to running down the ditch.

She also stands (without a lead) and allows me to hose her off using the spray pistol. Her brother tolerates being hosed down, but Bib loves it.

Maybe she's a water spaniel mix. ;-) Very funny girl.

  • Bibi is beautiful, love the pic of her lying in the water to cool off and the one where she's peering intently into the water.

  • That last pic is great!

Spraying with hose!! You have to do a video of the drainage ditch run and the hose off! :D Mine went swimming in San Francisco Bay yesterday twice, both times far enough out to paddle.

I used Wisdom Panel for my assumed Basenji mix. It showed no basenji at all. My boy is 32 lbs and short hair. His DNA says he is 25% American Eskimo 12.5% Boston Terrier 12.5% Chow Chow 12.5% German Shepherd 12.5% Miniature Schnauzer 25% Breed Group-Sporting, Herding, Hound, Terrier. Having owned basenjis all my life I would say my boy has basenji in him by his personality and behavior regardless of what his dna says!!

Buddy is not an under cover dog he'll start at the top of the bed, get his nose just under them and push them back to the foot of the bed bunched up then lay against it.

All dogs that are treated well will be good protectors. You want big dogs means like Labs, German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, etc. or any mixed breed dogs will do as well.

@Lovelace: Really? What ones? I don't know of any that have all the criteria? I've done extensive research on the breeds, and i'm curious I don't recall any. I think Pat means lots of dogs have one or more of these traits. Those three things all together MAY be an indication that the dog does have some basenji in it…but not for sure. Because the dog could be a boxer/husky mix...and end up with right color/markings, pointy ears, a curly tail, and have wrinkle on the forehead (lots of dogs have wrinkles around the face). Rat terriers are notorious for looking like Basenjis...but the shape of their head is slightly different, and the breed was founded using some Basenji way back. Another thing to remember is that after several generations of mixing, all dogs tend to go back to a natural or pariah dog shape...squarish, brown, pointy ears, slightly curled tail...that is just the natural phenotype of "dog"...so a dog might end up looking Basenji-ish even if there is no actual Basenji there. I am not refering specifically to the OP...that dog does look like it might have some Basenji in it..or Rat terrier...but it is REALLY hard to say for sure. It doesn't matter really, because everyone is welcome here...Basenji, mix, B-look alike...welcome...
