    So today I decided to take Otis to the new local dogpark that is located about 25 minutes from our house. He has never been to one and neither have I, so this was a first for both of us. We first went for a slow run, so my son could scooter for about 25 minutes, just enough to wear us all out…and then we went to the park area for the dogs.
    As we got closer to the fence I noticed what I thought looked like a basenji so I started walking faster, all excited to see a basenji..when I got even closer I saw that there were two B's playing in there and once I got to the fence, half jogging by now, leaving my poor 4 yr old in the dust I might add, I realized there were three, read it, 3 b's in there doing the B-500 right up to the fence were we were at..we had to stop so Lukas could catch up..LOL.
    Once inside Otis got very skiddish, he had never had several strange dogs in his face before, much less up his butt, so his tail was as straight as I have ever seen it and he had a mohawk, that would make most punkers proud..he pretty quickly settled down though and enjoyed the park, as long as he was about 10-20 feet away from me..he actually kept on turning around looking at me to see if it was Ok and also, I think, to not loose me..
    They all ended up having a great time, it was pretty cool to see.
    The owner was a woman I know via email, through BRAT, so I had never met her before, she had one female, Belle(red), of her own and these two 8 month old boys, that she was fostering about to adopt though..Shango (Red) and Ra(I believe) he was a tri. They were tiny compared to my large, but younger Otis, maybe about 17 or so lbs, which we both contributed to the fact that they were in pretty bad shape when Brat got them a few months ago, malnurished and mite infested and so on.
    She actually thought Otis was too large for being a basenji, but I don't think he is. She has never seen any "normal sized B's, the two pups are very small and her girl was petite at about 20lbs so yes Otis towered them all. All in all, we had a great time, we will do it again.. Of course I forgot my camera, typical, but I did tell her about the forum, so hopefully we will see her on here in a few..

    Sounds like a fun time.

    Raising hackles is common for my B when he's around strangers. He's typically a cautious B in general, but always curious enough to approach people. I'm sure Otis enjoyed his time around fellow Basenjis. I wish there were more around here. I've been to a few different dog parks before and never have I seen another Basenji. :(

    Sounds like the first visit was a success! That's great that Otis looked back to see where you were. That's pretty good having run into 3 Bs too! I have yet to see a Basenji at the dog park I go to. People only mention that there has been some in the past but have not been around. Buddy likes to wrestle and run with the any dog large or small.

    I am happy Otis got to play with one of his kind. Otis is not to tall Jaycee is tall. When we went to dog show Jaycee wanted to play with all dogs. Hope all of you can get together again for another play day. Don't forget the son you know the four year old. LOL…

    I am glad too, he did enjoy it..he has been sleeping like a dead basenji since we got home..and no, I will not forget about Lukas..he is noicey enough, so I won't be able to "forget" him..

    You had a really great "first" experience at a dog park! A dog park basenji is a tired basenji. Glad you had such a good time.

    Well, I went to the dog park again. It was actually kinda boring. Only one other guy there with 2 little, shaved white dogs. He was not talkative at all and after the initial sniff, the dogs pretty much ignored on another. It was kinda hot (90 degrees) + humid + around dinner time so I wasn't really surprised. I was gonna leave when I, with the sun in my eyes, saw someone showing up with a dog with a curly tail and pointy ears. I thought, "OMG, is that a basenji, can't leave now." Turns out it was a Shiba-Inu. Cute dog. I thought, "Hey, maybe we'll get something here, playwise." No such luck, again, ignoring after the initial sniff. Oh well, it still made a tired basenji, which is good. I will go back again. Oh, and DolceMomma, this park also separates small and large. But the "large" dog area is so-o much nicer than the small dog area. First time, we started in the "small" dog area, alone, five minutes, went into the "large" dog area, 'cause that's where everyone else was. I just think this is a good way for my boy to get socialized. But I am/will be vigilant.

    They just opened a new park built on a retired landfill that has not one but TWO areas for dog parks, so when one gets run down, they'll open the other and close the first to allow grass to regrow, etc. She-Ra loves it, too, because unlike the other parks this one is wide open and has TONS of running room. Dream come true for us, but it'll still get hot in the summertime, I'm sure.

    She-Ra goes to our local park at least twice a week. It's a nice area with a sectioned-off area for smaller dogs or if a dog is having "behavior issues" you can take it in there if there's no other dogs. A lot of "regulars" maintain law and order if a dog owner is getting out of line (allowing their dog to bully, etc.). She enjoys it. Runs in to do her business really quick. Sniffs everyone, but hates it when other sniff her. There'll be the occasional "give me space" growl if too many dogs get around her at once and sniff. Spends most of the time sniffing and standing in the middle of the park staring like a statue at something. Then you get the eventual chase going - those are always fun because the other owners are like 'Oh, She-Ra's gonna get caught!' and I grin and say 'No she's not.' as she runs circles around all the other dogs. I love watching my dog run…it's poetry in motion. After about an hour she's pooped and ready to go back home. We've had very few incidents with her that haven't been swiftly fixed. She seems to enjoy going quite a bit, and we're making friends with some of the regulars...I guess we're fairly regular now by this point as well.

    @basenjibratz: It's wonderful seeing a basenji run. They are usually the smallest in the big dog parks but they sure can keep up. When I use to take Talker to a make shift dog park (four enclosed baseball fields) he would run with a border collie. The border collie would always be chasing Talker and the humans were always amazed at his speed and how he was never panting while the border collie would be panting up a storm. It was wonderful to see him stretched out in a full run. Trixie's Daddy should be proud at his girl and so should you. :) Yes I have had several people comment that after a full run Trixie is looking at the other dogs like "why are you panting?" They have often asked me if she ever seems to get tired, my reply is always yes but it takes a while! They are beautiful to watch run! Everytime I watch her it amazes me!

    Basenjis often do best in the big dog section, (they are big dogs in small bodies) as long as the big dogs are nice. Glad you had such a good time, it is a joy to watch them run, and best of all…..a tired basenji is a GOOD basenji. One park we go to has a rule, no children under 8! Anne
