Senior boy needs a new home

  • Houston

I am glad Susan has a potential family lined up..It just infuriates me to see somebody "throw away" a living thing because he is elderly..:(

  • I hope this old boy finds a loving family, I can't believe that anyone could be that callous.

That happened to my Mickii and Parry's Kaelii's Mom… her people decided it was too much trouble to take care of a senior (even if the sleep 90% of the time)... and we had to re-home her. What it really comes down to is they don't want to have to deal with death or having to maybe make the decision to help them over the rainbow bridge. Goods news was that Sadie lived another 2 1/2 yrs in a wonderful home before she went over the bridge

It's tough being the breeder or BRAT having to deal with something like this but you do because you're responsible. I would never ever of thought of getting rid of my previous three in their old age. They gave me a lot of joy over the years and getting rid of them at that point would have been an act of treason to the dog. I once told Karen at Medfy Basenji Rescue what's she's doing is impressive and she said no "it's depressing".

  • I realy hope this old boy finds a nice kind home. Its absolutely unbelievable that someone could do this to what is in effect part of their family. Some people should just not have pets.:(

  • Everyone can relax. Quinn is coming home to live with me. He will be a nice companion for my Classy who is the same age. There will be a nice extra large dog bed for him and Classy to share in the Kitchen. And, they both can come up to bed at nite.
    I'm sure my other B's won't mind a bit.

  • Wonderful Kathryn, I was about to step up but better he be your bed buddy than a 4th at my house. Mine are 9, 11 and 13, all going to be a year older in September & October and I feel they are in their prime! Sure, we have a few pills to take a couple of times a day, but they are wise and calm, very pleasant friends! I consider "old" to be 17 or so!

  • Thats great news, i hope you have some good years together.

  • Awesome Kathryn, hope the transition is smooth for the old guy.

  • Houston

    Very nice to hear Kathryn..

  • That's great of you Kathryn! I am sure he will be very happy!

  • That is brilliant news Kathryn , I hope the two oldies have have some wonderful years of companionship together, and the other B's don't mind too much.

  • What good news Kathryn, how about a pic when you get him?

  • I love my 'oldies' so much. There's no way I could treat a dog like that.

I really hope he finds a loving home soon.

  • Oops! Just read the rest of this thread!
    Great news! 😃

  • Just read the whole story, poor thing. It's brilliant that Kathryn can take him in but what a sad story. I can never understand how anyone can have a dog or any pet for years and then get rid of them when they no longer serve a purpose. It breaks my heart every time one of mine gets old and eventually goes, but at least i know they had a good life with us in a loving home, right to the end.
Glad it had a happy ending but i still feel for the poor boy being uprooted from his familiar surroundings at such a late stage in his life. I hope he gets lots of TLC.

  • Theresa,
I'm really happy to be taking Quinn in.Although I have many other B's,I felt like this was something I had to do.You see,I will tell you all a sad story.

About 8 years ago,I got a call from basenji rescue. My friend, Barbara told me that one of my pups that I sold almost 13 years ago was in rescue and would I take her back. The first think I told her was why wasn't I contacted by the people? They knew that they signed a contract to return the dog if they couldn't keep her anymore. It was told to me that they didn't want to call me.Reason for the return-They where now pregnant and didn't want a dog around there baby. So,they got her when she was 8 weeks old and now all these years later, she wasn't wanted because of a human child coming into the picture.I'm sorry, but that is not a good enough reason for me!
Sad part about Indy, that was her name, was when I got her back she was so depressed that she wouldn't eat and after a month of this, and believe me I tried everything(chicken, etc.) I decided that she was telling me that she wanted to leave. So, after many weeks of crying over this poor, depressed B,I sent her over the Bridge.I felt it was the only thing I could do.
I did have someone that would have taken her and tried with her,but couldn't get a transport! The people who where involved should have been ashamed of themselves, they sent her to her death.I just couldn't see her starving herself anymore.

So, I will try to make Quinn happy in memory of my Indy.

Very, very sad. Thank you Kathryn for sharing this touching story and taking in Quinn. I'm sure he will be very happy with you. You did everything you could to help Indy.
I rescued a 2 year old R/W in 1994 named Ringo. He was given up because the couple were having a baby and didn't want him either for that reason. He was sick with a digestive disorder, way under weight and very angry. He bit my other B/W Basenji (female)on the neck the second day. The good news is I worked with him, got his health under control and had him until he died in 2007 at 14-1/2. He turned out to be a great dog.

  • Kathryn, you are doing a great thing and i wish you well with your lovely gesture. I am sure with time Quinn will settle with you since you are clearly a good person and animals have great instincts about people. You were unfortunate with Indy but you did your best and at the end of the day, you at least ended her personal suffering and not for selfish reasons, it was for the right reasons. Dan, you were lucky to be working with a stronger dog i suspect, good on you for your determination.

I look forward to hearing how Quinn gets on Kathryn.

    Theresa

  • I'm having a problem with transport for Quinn.I can't drive to get him and need someone to deliver him. I could drive to meet someone but not a long way as I'm not a happy driver.
