One of my Basenjis is also diagnosed with early kidney disease. The vet prescribed Enalapril Maleate (generic for Vasotec). My vet allowed me to choose whatever prescription food I wanted to use. After some research I chose Blue Buffalo BLUE Natural Veterinary Diet KS Kidney Support. I looked into and tried a more holistic food, Dr. Harvey's - a dehydrated food, but Kushika couldn't manage to eat it without getting it all over the walls, kitchen floor, and herself so we went back to the kibble. I liked the Dr. Harvey food AND you can call to talk to Dr. Harvey, who asked me to send Kushika's lab results to him so he could make specific recommendations dependent on those results. Kushika came to live with us at almost 10 years old and was immediately diagnosed with kidney disease. At age 12+ she is still with us, going strong and looking better than when she arrived.

I can't believe how fast Cody has bounced back from surgery. He was sluggish maybe a day and 1/2. Now he acts like his old normal self except he has 30 staples in his belly. I tried to catch him before he ran out to the backyard this morning, but missed. He ran down the flight of stairs! I have been feeding him the vet recommended can dog food and he loves it. I got a can and 1/2 in him within 24 hours. Still hates to take those pills though. I can't hide it in the food b/c now he looks for it. I am afraid to feed him anything else yet. I don't want to jinx a good thing. Thanks everyone for their suggestions, prayers and encoraging words. fingers crossed I hope we never have to do this again!

That is great to hear… and Kristii was the same way.. within a day of being home from surgery she was just like nothing ever happened (like Cody with 30+ stapes in her belly)...
Sounds like Cody is over the "hump" and on the road to recovery....

Cody is doing great. He his back to eating 75% hard kibble 25% soft. He got a toy out last night and asked to play. He gets his staples out on Tues. I can't wait b/c he needs a bath! <<shhh>> don't tell him that.Of course the problem now his for him not to pull a staple. LOL I can't believe its been a week since his surgery and how fast he has recovered. Wished us humans recovered that fast from major surgery.</shhh>

One of our basenji's (Willow) has a very sensitive stomach. At least once a year she will go through a spell of vomiting, diarrhea and no eating or drinking. The vet said they can pick up viruses here and there so hopefully it is something like that and will work itself out. Willow usually gets better within a week or so but she has gotten dehydrated before and needed fluids. Like the emergency vet, they give her an antibiotic and nausea medicine. Good Luck!

Cody got his staples out last night and was given a clean bill of health.(although he's not clean) Yeah! He got a special treat for being a good boy at the vet. We are hoping for a trip to the dog park this weekend so he can run around and play with other dogs. With a bath following.

Great news. I bet y'all are so relieved that it is finally over. I am happy for Cody, and hope he has a swell time at the park, he deserves it..
