I have had Scooby for 6 years, he is a little over 7 now and been 25lbs the whole time. Penny is guessed to be about 1 year old and weighs in at 13 lbs. I am in the New Braunfels Area between Austin and San Antonio
Scooby was adopted by us from the Humane Society in Hawaii he was a stray. Penny was found a stray, too and I am adopting from a very nice foster mom.

  • Welcome form the UK - I am always delighted to hear of Basenjis finding loving adoptive homes.

  • Good Luck and have lots of fun. Welcome.

  • Welcome owner of a Basenji mix. I have a black and white mix that is 7 months old.

  • Thanks everyone for the welcome. Today is the day I will get my Penny :) I am soo excited. I am picking up a small pool for her to swim and lounge in, because I was told she loves the water :) Gotta love to cool off with temperatures in the 100s Fahrenheit.

I am so excited for you and fro Penny..
If she like swater by all means help her cool off. I can't keep our dogs out during the day for extended periods of times, we are having about 102+ degrees here and it is stagnant…horrid.

  • I know, we had 101 with a heat index of 105 here yesterday. Scooby spend his day inside, except for a few minutes to do his business and then an after dinner walk (about 20 minutes) then right back inside. It is just too hot here, I don't understand how some people around my neighborhood can leave their dogs outside all day long, even with water and shade it get's way too hot here in Texas and I don't want anything to happen to my baby :)

I know you are so correct. My chickens water get tyo be about 97 degrees by midday in the shade, so it would mean that even the dogs water gets that hot, crazy to leave them out..

  • I am in Jackson TN and our heat index has been 105 or so for the past week with no end in sight. We walk early in the morning and then just out for potty breaks until close to dark and then we play Frisbee for a while and then come in. Bella likes water too. Haven't thought about a pool. I can only imagine it wouldn't last long if she got bored and decided to chew it. Would love to see some pictures of the pool playing.

@gretchen - You might want to reconsider if you can't find exactly what you are looking for... go for the younger adult... IMO...

If you'd like to adopt a rescue….I'd highly recommend Basenji Rescue and Transport (B.R.A.T.). There are 4 rescues waiting for adoption in Texas right now. We got our Prince through BRAT and we love him dearly!

One good thing about BRAT is that these dogs are evaluated during their time with the foster parents. If you look on the website you will get a pretty good idea of each of the dog's personalities. They tell you if they are good with children, cats, other dogs. They tell you if they are hyper or laid-back and any special qualities or traits. They will even tell you what kind of home may be best suited to the dog. You are given as much history as is available about them, including any health conditions.
